  • NCAA Faces severe budget shortfall

This is as good a spot as any, in considering a look ahead the NCAA will have around $800 million budget shortfall due to lost Tourney revenue. This will impact life in a few ways beyond just the Bearcats.

One way I envision the NCAA attempting to grow and recuperate is pulling the Bowl games into an NCAA football tournament, worth several hundred million. I am kind of a fan of revenue sharing though in relation to these tournaments. The NCAA should revenue share with all member institutions a higher level than current, give a bonus to school and conference for making the tournament, then attach bonuses to schools only for advancing in said tournament. If on campus first round games aren't appealing, then have regional bowl games. I understand the realistic list of true contenders is probably less than 8 each year, but I would have a 32 team tournament for football. Keep bowl games only for teams not making the tournament (a gift to existing bowls and their fans/teams), eliminate need to have a winning record and extend practice time to all teams. Money will drive these decisions and money crunches from coronavirus could change the landscape of college athletics. I'd also expand BB tourney to 128 teams with top 64 getting an extra home game on Tue/Wed before hitting the Thur/Fri brackets. In both FB and BB, I'd rather have teams in that are undeserving than arguments over who is deserving. The undeserving teams will have improbable odds to win it all.

This is really good article from Dana O'Neil for those who subscribe to the Athletic. Breaks down several things like coaching salaries, AD budgeting and starts out with a mention of the UC soccer team being discontinued. ($)

ECU looks like it's going to chop something. https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1070051549303443456/kgxglZC0_reasonably_small.jpg

ECU interim chancellor Ron Mitchelson says the Athletics Fiscal Sustainability Working Group's report recommends the reduction of sports. Overall feeling is the Pirates need a new strategic plan to compete in the AAC and hold up financially.
