KOCH: Happ Excited for Next Career Step
At some point next Monday night during Major League Baseball's first-year player draft, Ian Happ is expected to become the first player in University of Cincinnati history to be selected in the opening round.

If he does, it will provide validation for the dedication and hard work that have defined Happ for the past three years, ever since he arrived in Cincinnati from his hometown of Pittsburgh to play for then-UC coach Brian Cleary.

                gobearcats:
University of Cincinnati baseball player Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) capped off a successful 2015 campaign after being selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago Cubs on Monday evening. With the selection, he becomes the highest draft pick in UC baseball history, making him the only Bearcats player to land in the first round since the draft began in 1965.

                Huber:
Next up for Happ is the decision he must make about his next step. According to MLB draft rules, Happ has until 11:59 p.m. on August 15 to sign with the Cubs. If he does not, and decides to return to Cincinnati for his senior year, Happ can re-enter the draft next June. Bearcats fans would love to see Happ back at Marge Schott Stadium next season, but only time will tell.

Congrats to Ian, way to go!! As much as I'd love to see him finish his degree and take the Bearcats to the next level and as much as I hate the Cubbies - I hope Ian signs and takes full advantage of the clout he has now to get a great signing bonus.

Very few people get to be top 10 drafts picks and make it back there again the next year, just ask the kid who went #1 last year how he's healing from Tommy John surgery...

There's a pretty good possibility he plays in the Cubs organization and is traded before getting to the majors. The Cubs have a lot of young talent, so they can afford to make prospects available for trade in a couple years.
