  • 12 Team playoff coming in 2023?

I think everyone was so focused on 8 teams that no one considered that 12 might be the number? ($)

I'll believe it when I see it. I still think it should be closer to 32 teams. Move conference championship games to Thanksgiving weekend. Top 16 teams get a home game second weekend in Dec (traditional conference championship weekend). Losers of that first round can still go to one of the traditional lower tier bowl games, as can 40-60 other teams. The 16 team remaining playoff field plays first round at a Bowl Game mid December, then round of 8 at the four CFP major bowls New Year's Day. The round of four can be a held in some very warm bowls that rotate around many bowls for the semi-final, with the 5th CFP bowl city playing host to the championship. Bonus for tv, the network with conference contract rights gets to air the extra home game so only the round of 16 on goes into a new tv rights contract. Imagine #1 Alabama hosting a 16th ranked Oklahoma or Michigan, and the game is on CBS or #1Ohio State hosting a 16th ranked hosting 16th ranked Notre Dame or Miami, and the game is on Big Ten Network. ESPN for ACC, and Fox for Big 12, etc...

It will never happen. It makes too much sense and the fans would love it.

This looks more and more like they're actually going to do this. It's on the agenda for the CFP meetings here in Dallas on June 22

I hope they are looking at multiple options. Expansion makes more sense to CFP if they can keep the bowls happy. I wish the NCAA would've simply done this in the 70's before the tv money reduced their power to next to nothing. Once the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the schools, it was all bets out the door for the NCAA. Heck, even the NCAA basketball tourney wasn't as prestigious as the NIT until tv got involved with an expanded field, thus creating March Madness. The NCAA will essentially do what the CFP tells them to do, er the P5 tells them to do.

They are looking at 12 teams and the recommendation just happened per several media sources.

Could this provide the path for UC to get to the ACC? ESPN saying that ND would not be eligible for a CFP bye even if they are top 4 since they cannot win the ACC conference title as an Independent. Would ND finally jump all in to the ACC making the 15th football team and the ACC needing one more team?

"Under this proposal, Notre Dame and other independents would not be eligible for a bye because they cannot win a conference title."

It looks like this will happen in 2025 when the current agreement expires. 6th highest ranked conference champs plus the next 6 highest ranked teams with no max on teams from one conference.

Looks that way. The other option for the ACC is to punt someone (Wake or BC) and play with 14

Makes sense to boot, but I would think the ACC (all conferences) want to have as many teams in the CFP as possible. Booting the bottom does not add to your strength - unless counting on not playing those 2 teams making your schedule stronger since they don't weigh you down with a low ranked opponent. The ACC would have 2 of 12 based on last season (Clemson and ND). Miami was #18 in the final. That was with ND playing 10 team ACC schedule. One would hope they would expand so they could have another shot at getting a 3rd team in the CFP and having 25% chance of winning it all. UC could fill that need nicely.

This was eye opening in regards to how the American got itself involved. In case you're paywalled, Neville Pinto is now the chair of the American Conference Board of Directors. There's a ton of stuff on what the AAC is doing in the background in relation to the P5 and there's also some stuff about the CFP expansion in here.

This would be very helpful in recruiting for a school like UC. Not that Fick and Co. need a lot of help, but definitely gives them ammunition to compete.
