  • Under Armour betting on UC?

Somewhat old news by now but UC has inked a deal to move from Adidas to Under Armour for a handsome 5x annual payout - cincinnati.com reporting a ~$5MM per year deal. I spoke with my son (who is a UC Bearcat mascot, yes that's right, proud papa has Bearcat-in-Italy Jr. running around in the Capital One Champion suit as Mr. Bearcat ) and the buzz in Clifton is that UA is betting on UC getting into a P5 and wants to get in while we are still cheap. Interesting development, certainly the cash is a big increase. Not sure why UA would move on UC if they thought we were stuck in the AAC.

https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/mens If you check out their list of universities, you will see that they have many mid-majors. UC, in my opinion is the top of all of them. This by no means leads me to believe that UA believes that we are heading to a P5.

They have some big guys too. Their Notre Dame contract is $90mm over 10 years. Maryland is 10 years at $33mm. Short on details but it looks like our deal may be larger than Maryland. They also pay big dollars for Oregon.

Oregon isn't with Under Armour. They are with Nike. The CEO of Nike is from Eugene and I believe that's where the Nike HQ is.

Didn't realize Maryland was only 3.3 per year though. Maryland is suppose to be the main school for UA. The test school to show things off, like Oregon is for Nike.

I wouldn't read anything more into this than the fact that UA is expanding and increasing its marketshare -

"The extension with Maryland comes on the heels of news that Under Armour recently surpassed Adidas as the second-largest sports brand in the United States behind Nike. The company also has partnerships with Notre Dame, Navy, Auburn and South Carolina, among others."

Wy UC inked a better deal than Maryland is puzzling. Maryland has more exposure and is the UA hometown team.

I agree, we shouldn't use this as any evidence we're going to a P5 conference. If our deal is better than Maryland (the earlier posts may not be correct data) the reason is probably due to timing of the deal - most likely Maryland's deal is a few years old and the current value of these deals is higher at the time we signed on with them.

More to the heart of this topic, the deal represents Under Armor betting on our future exposure with or without inclusion in P5 conference. T-ville has our team improving and we will be in better bowls soon. The B-ball program is also heading in right direction with repeated NCAA Tourney appearances and better recruits on the way.

Congratulations to the UC staff who worked on this deal - they did a good job!

UA was founded by former Maryland football captain Kevin Plank, and its HQ are in Baltimore. This makes the UA-Maryland relationship the same as Oregon-Nike. UA has been trying to get into the same kind of market share Nike has, and is using Maryland uniform designs to compete with Nike.

Let's hope the Bearcats logo apparel and merchandise becomes as popular in malls around the country as the SEC schools!! You cannot travel anywhere in the southeastern region without seeing every single SEC school merchandise on display in every store that sells such items. Same goes for Big10 in the midwest.
