Here's a bit more info from the Idaho perspective. The sole dissenting vote (7-1) came from the board member from Moscow, the home of U of Idaho. The Vandals are out of the loop on this one and stuck in a troubled WAC.

This should move quickly, perhaps by tomorrow. The only hangup now would be if Marinatto misjudged Air Force's interest. I don't see AFA staying put. The MWC is in trouble. They've already lost UT, BYU, TCU and now BSU. They are about to raid the WAC again for UT St and San Jose St, leaving the WAC in a rump state, considering that Fresno St and Nevada are already leaving for the MWC at the end of this school year. (How would you like to be those two schools now?)
The WAC has had to step down by adding Denver, TX St and a couple other lower-tier schools. The carousel continues unabated ...

Broncos leave little doubt about desire to take football program east in 2013

Having another team from the West is critical, Kustra said. “We made it very clear to them ... if Boise State was going to go in, we would go in with a western partner.”
If Air Force does not accept, the Big East has been in discussions with other Western schools, Kustra said. Though Kustra did not name them, BYU and San Diego State are the likely teams.

If Boise State, and let's say San Diego State joins, then we have to get rid of the "Big East" name. Keeping the BE name would be like the SEC taking Oregon into their conference, and then keeping the SEC name. Doesn't make any sense.
How 'bout something like: "Coast to Coast 12"?
Let's hear any ideas you may have!

i do not see that name changing. they want to continue to bball identity. still plenty of teams left, and it would not completely shock me to see wv come limping back in at some point under any one of a number of circumstances. the reality of being that far out of line by yourself geographically will set it for all parties involved. maybe call it big east mountain. sounds like an alt country band.

The name needs to stay the same -- there's no need to call glaring attention to the fact that the conference is an unwieldy cross-country monster born out of necessity as opposed to any historic or geographic ties.
Plus, it needs to remain established that this is the Big East conference, not some new conference that's asking for the seat at the table formerly occupied by the Big East.#41
You can give it a patriotic name, but it still sucks.

For football, I'd honestly just have the "championship" game as an extra home game for the team with the better record / higher rank.
If you hold it at some neutral location like Indianapolis, you're liable to get a game with 15-20K people attending and a lot of empty seats on TV. None of the programs involved in this new BE have a brand-level or national following to really pack a house that isn't theirs, and you have to figure that getting fans to travel will be difficult when you're talking such long car rides between cities like Tampa, Boise, etc. and any middle-location you can pick.#41

Mountain West remains option for Air Force as it ponders tough realignment decision
Although moving the football program to the Big East is an appealing option, sources with knowledge of academy superintendent Lt. Gen. Mike Gould’s thought process, who did not want their names used because Gould has not spoken publicly about realignment in weeks, said Gould might be leaning toward staying in the Mountain West.
That could change as Gould weighs the pros and cons of each path, and the worst-case scenarios about moving to the Big East. The issues include a lack of guarantees about television money and the stability of the Big East, as well as the perception of a service academy’s motives and loyalty.
There could also be a concern that if Air Force joined the Big East it would be perceived as chasing money like many of the civilian schools that have switched conferences.
The Big East believes it will get a major increase in television money in its next contract, although that isn’t guaranteed. The Big East reportedly turned down a television contract worth more than a billion dollars this year, but that offer was made before TCU, Syracuse, Pitt and West Virginia left. According to Boise State’s motion in the board of education meeting, each Big East member gets $3.7 million in television money, and Mountain West schools gets $1.4-$1.9 million from the conference. Air Force can’t be certain how much the Big East’s next television contract will be worth.
Air Force also has had concerns about the stability of the Big East. UConn and Louisville have been rumored to be interested in other conferences. However, the Mountain West has its own stability issues, considering Boise State seems likely to leave the MW, and conference member San Diego State could be a target for the Big East if Air Force stays put.
There are also questions if the Big East will maintain an automatic BCS qualifier spot after the BCS contract ends after the 2013 season, and about playing on days other than Saturday as part of the new television deal.
Before any decision is official, Gould will talk to Air Force officials in Washington, D.C. Thompson said he didn’t know if Gould had a timetable for his decision.Last edited by UCBearcat4ever; 11-07-2011, 09:45 PM.
