Chris Hunter

Class of 2002
Position: PF
School: West HS
City: Gary, IN, IN
Height: 6-10
Interest: 1

11/14/01: signed with Michigan

9/26: "Much-pursued West Side center Christopher Hunter is not sure where he will play in college yet. He knows where it won't be, though. Hunter, a 6-foot-11 senior, said Tuesday that he has narrowed his list of potential next stops to three -- Ohio State, Michigan and Seton Hall. Conspicuously absent from the list are state schools Indiana and Purdue. IU coach Mike Davis had offered Hunter a scholarship late this summer, touching off a wave of optimism from Hoosier hopefuls still rebounding from the early exit of big man Kirk Haston to the NBA. "I see a better opportunity at some of these other schools," Hunter said. "It's probably going to come down to which gives the best opportunity. Most of the schools are fairly equal in facilities and coaches and all that stuff." - thetimesonline.com

8/8: "Talk to him now and he sounds like he has a good handle on his recruitment. Hunter says Illinois, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Ohio State, Michigan State and Seton Hall comprise his list. He says all have offered but Michigan State." - Blue Chip Hoops (moved to inactive)

8/2: Rivals Hoops is reporting that Hunter is still wide open. He did >not< mention Cincinnati in a list of 8 schools.

7/31: "BF Chris Hunter is listing Georgia Tech, Missouri, Illinois, Cincinnati and Xavier among others and stated that he would come up with a concrete list after nationals from which he would choose." - PrepStars (from inactive to active)

7/22: "We spoke with Gary West Side head coach John Boyd for the latest on the recruitment of his 6'10 C prospect, Chris Hunter.
Hunter currently lists seven schools, including: Purdue, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Georgia Tech, DePaul and Penn State. While their is no exact date set as to when Hunter might make his decision, Boyd said: "I give it about a month. That will give him some time to do some homework on universities he is interested in." With lackluster performances from Hunter throughout the early spring and summer, many people have changed opinions on Hunter, but Boyd believes that "Chris' best basketball is definetly ahead of him."
"One thing I've learned in Indiana is that people have high expectations. As fast as these kids are growing up and talking about pros in the 9th grade, we sometimes forget about that thing called college and becoming a better human being." Only months ago it appeared that Indiana would make the push for Hunter's services; however, according to Boyd, that has all changed. "I used to hold daily conversations with assistant Julius Smith," Boyd added. "I think they have shadow interest now, but not the type of interest I think a player like Chris deserves." Hunter is currently in Pittsburgh with his West Side teammate Brandon Cameron for the Five-Star Basketball Camp which ends later today. He will next be in action at the Super Showcase and AAU Nationals in Orlando, FL." - Matts Stats

7/11: "Chris Hunter, a multi-talented forward from West Side High School in Gary, Indiana, is one of the top defensive players in the country in the class of 2002. Hunter, a mobile 6-11, 200 pound center prospect from Westside H.S. in Gary, Ind., has a host of high major programs seriously recruiting him this spring. Hunter is likely to have more schools try to jump into his recruiting race. Hunter told us his list now includes Louisville, Missouri, Michigan, Purdue, North Carolina, Syracuse, and Illinois. "I am pretty much open right now," Hunter said. "I have not ruled out any school." Hunter is a player to watch. He has a lot of physical skills. He runs the floor well, blocks shots, and rebounds. His offensive game is still developing but after seeing Hunter for about the 10th time over the past two summers, he can play high division one basketball.
"I am going to cut my list down at the end of July," Hunter said. "Then I will line up some official visits." Hunter has not taken any unofficial visits yet. "I am just trying to work on my game this summer," Hunter said. "Then I will worry about the recruiting process." From Russ Blake: Previously, Hunter had an up and down weekend at the recent St. Louis Eagles Invitational. Hunter has pretty good skills for a big man, including the ability to put the ball on the floor and draw contact. On top of that, he's ultra mobile and is very quick from North to South. As a junior, Hunter averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and three blocks as a junior at Westside." - Blue Chip Hoops

6/21: "The Wolverine spoke with Gary (Ind.) Westside coach John Boyd on Tuesday about his 6-11 rising senior, Chris Hunter. "We should be taking an unofficial (visit) to Michigan next week," Boyd said of the forward/center, who is also interested in North Carolina, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Michigan State, and Purdue. Boyd also mentioned a new wrinkle in Hunter's recruitment. "He's been entertaining the thought of going to school with his running mate," Boyd said, referring to Westside point guard Brandon Cameron. According to Boyd, Cameron is interested in Penn State, Marquette, Louisville, Princeton, and Michigan. Boyd also said that Hunter still hopes to have a decision some time in late July or early August. He is ranked No. 25 nationally by Hoop Scoop, No. 36 by Prep Spotlight, No. 38 by The Sporting News, No. 77 by Prep Stars Recruiter's Handbook, and No. 84 by School Sports." - The Wolverine

6/18: Don't call a Chris Hunter a center. The 6-11 big man from Gary (IN) West Side sees himself as either a big or wing forward -- but not a center. "In college I see myself as four/three," Hunter told PrepStars.com. "I can play inside and outside." And that's where scouts and coaches disagree. Hunter's performances in the spring left more than a few observers scratching their heads, bemoaning the lanky, athletic kid's tendency to play short by hanging out on the wing. As a result, he's dropped from a sure-fire top 40 player to someone on the cusp of the top 75 (he's currently ranked No. 77 by PrepStars.com). If his stock continues to plummet, then he could find himself shunned by big-time programs. But perhaps Chris knows something we don't. Another player of comparable physical dimensions and skills also drew criticism for his finesse -- Jonathan Bender. That's right, the same Jonathan Bender who broke Michael Jordan's scoring record in the McDonald's All-American game and went on to become a top-five pick in the 1999 NBA draft. It's tough to imagine Hunter as a lottery pick right now, but some of the same capabilities are there. He handles the ball pretty well on the perimeter and uses his long arms to finish over everyone inside. He's also a capable shot-blocker and rebounder when he plants himself in the lane. The biggest issue with Hunter -- as it was with Bender -- is his rail thin frame. Part of Hunter's sometimes ineffectual play inside results from his lack of strength; shorter, more muscular players easily push him out of the lane. With a few more pounds and expanded offensive arsenal, Hunter will play virtually anywhere he wants. If it's unclear from what level Hunter will draw scholarship offers, then his recruitment is just as uncertain. Chris has been linked with Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and others, but he won't be ready to narrow his list until July. He told PrepStars.com that he's yet to receive any offers. A teammate of Sean May for Bloomington Red AAU, Hunter plans to attend the ABCD camp again this summer. He tentatively plans to make a college decision in August." - PrepStars

6/1: "We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but the bottom line is that right now Hunter is not getting it done. He was a huge disappointment at Spiece, and wasn't much better in Bloomington. The bottom line is that Hunter seems to lack enthusiasm for the game and plays with absolutely no energy. Too often he stands around the perimeter on offense and is a total non-factor. It is a shame, because his upside is tremendous, but you can't be talking about potential forever. Hunter does run and jump well, which enables him to block a number of shots. However, a player with his rep needs to play much harder in our book. Obviously, the summer will be a huge key for him." - AllStar Report

5/30: "Possibly the most disappointing player at the event. That's too bad, because he needs a good outing to restore his previously good reputation. He just didn't get involved offensively for Bloomington Red; too much floating on the perimeter, too much not hitting the glass. It's frustrating because he does have some talent. If he starts mixing it up underneath over the summer and uses his quickness and length to make himself a bigger factor -- which he shows flashes of doing -- then lots of major interest will come his way." - PrepStars

5/29: "Chris is playing a little better but he simply is not getting a lot done yet. I hear he is still growing and that may be slowing him down and keeping him from adding some much needed weight. His legs are real toothpicks right now. I think IU and other high major schools still like Chris. You just have to give him a couple years to finish growing and gain some weight. If you back a ways, Chris kind of reminds me of Brad Sellers who finished his career at Ohio State." - Peegs

5/28: "The locals here in IU country were disappointed by the ferocious play of the Wisconsin Playground Warriors. Bloomington (IN) North 6-8 BF Sean May did his part, but fellow frontcourtsman Chris Hunter -- a 6-11 (6-10?) C from Gary (IN) West Side -- and the Red guards didn't offer much help." - PrepStars.com

5/25: "a mobile 6-11, 200 pound center prospect from Westside H.S. in Gary, Ind., has a host of high major programs seriously recruiting him this spring. Hunter told the Insiders Report that he is still fairly open, but listed Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, UCLA, Southern California and Stanford as the schools that he is looking at now. Hunter had an up and down weekend at the recent St. Louis Eagles Invitational. Though he does not always play inspired, Hunter has pretty good skills for a big man, including the ability to put the ball on the floor and draw contact. On top of that, he's ultra mobile and is very quick from North to South. On the downside, he will need to get significantly stronger and improve his free throw shooting at the next level. As a junior, Hunter averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and three blocks as a junior at Westside. He said he has a 2.0 GPA and will sit for the SAT on June 2 for the first time. Hunter will attend the adidas ABCD Camp this summer and then tour the summer circuit with Bloomington Red." - RivalsHoops (2 to 1)

5/22: "Chris "The Human Praying Mantis" Hunter apparently has a current list of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Purdue, Michigan State, Georgia Tech and Missouri. Gary (IN) West Side coach John Boyd told The Wolverine that the 6-11 C would most likely finish his visits by August and make a decision at that point." - PrepStars (3 - 2)

5/21: "Chris Hunter- 6’11 BF/C Bloomington Red. The rail thin Hunter is oozing with potential. He gets out and runs the floor like a deer and is very athletic. Hunter possesses some nice WF type skills with his face to the basket to as far as twenty feet away where he can put the ball on the floor and beat slower big men to the hoop or pull up for the 12-foot jumper. However, he is still 6’11 and needs to spend some more time on the blocks with his back to the bucket. If Hunter can add some weight and play with more aggressiveness he could be an elite recruit." - Phog.net

5/17: "On Sunday, The Wolverine spoke with 6-11 power forward/center Chris Hunter of Gary (Ind.) Westside. Hunter did not give a list of schools, saying merely, "I’ve been hearing from a lot of Big Ten schools, ACC schools." On Thursday, Westside coach John Boyd named Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Purdue, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, and Missouri as schools that Hunter is considering. He said that thus far Hunter has visited Ohio State, Indiana, Missouri, Purdue, and Illinois. According to Boyd, "We'll be done in August. He'll make a commitment in late July, early August." Before doing so, however, Hunter will check out a number of other schools. "We’re coming to Michigan," Boyd said. He also mentiioned plans to visit Penn State, Missouri, Illinois, DePaul, Indiana, and Georgia Tech. "The whole month of June we’ll be taking visits," said Boyd. Hunter is ranked No. 15 nationally by Prep Spotlight, No. 25 by Hoop Scoop, No. 38 by The Sporting News, and No. 40 by Prep Stars." - The Wolverine

5/14: "Chris Hunter, a multi-talented forward from West Side High School in Gary, Indiana, is one of the top players in the country in the class of 2002. It is for that reason he is being swamped with mail and offers from the top division one schools across the country. "I don't really have a top list right now," Hunter said. "I am pretty much open." But Hunter said he likes the ACC and Big Ten schools. "I don't have a leader," Hunter said. "I just want to see what is out there. I won't make a decision until I take several visits." Hunter said he might take some unofficial visits close to home or when he is on the road. Hunter will be at the ADIDAS camp but tour the NIKE circuit with Bloomington Red. Some of the schools that have an interest are Indiana, Maryland, Virginia, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan State, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Kentucky. "I have not taken any unofficial visits yet," Hunter said. "Not even to the local schools." Hunter averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks per game thus far this season. "I want to work on my overall game," Hunter said. "And I want to gain some strength while playing this summer." - Sullivan, Rivals Hoops

5/9: #38 Junior. "This slender athlete projects well as a shot blocker. He gets off the floor quickly but like most kids his age needs to add weight and strength" - Sporting News

5/5: "Chris Hunter continued to prove what a real project he is. He is about ready to do a major drop in the player rankings." - Peegs, Spiece Report

4/30: "Among those in the lead for the 6-foot-11 16-year-old, according to Boyd, are three Big Ten schools - Purdue, Michigan and Illinois - as well as Louisville, North Carolina and Georgetown. "That's basically a list of his favorites," Boyd said. Interestingly, that list didn't include either Notre Dame or Indiana, two in-state schools that have been reported to be heavily involved with Hunter. In fact, it was recently reported that the Hoosiers were near the top of Hunter's list, but Boyd refuted such reports Monday afternoon. "We haven't heard anything from Indiana," said Boyd, who later mentioned IU assistant Julius Smith when listing coaches who had been to West Side to scout Hunter. "That report's false." Hunter, who unofficially visited Purdue at least twice during the season (including an NIT game) is generally regarded as one of the top 25 players nationally, and Purdue hopes he'll continue its flow of talent from Gary to West Lafayette. In recent years, Gary has produced Boilermaker recruits such as Glenn Robinson, Gary and Greg McQuay and current junior-to-be Kenneth Lowe. Rarely in recent years has Purdue lost a Northwest Indiana recruit it's really wanted. Purdue's proximity to Gary, as well as its long tradition of featuring Region players, may factor into Hunter's decision, which will likely come before the early signing period in November. "I've always considered staying home to be a plus for a kid, because you develop a strong fan base," Boyd said. "But we're taking the same attitude we did with Kenneth. If it's best to leave, that's what we'll do." Hunter is perhaps Purdue's top recruiting target for its class of 2002-03, which already includes Pike shooting guard David Teague and will likely also include Evansville Mater Dei big man Matt Kiefer. Junior center Ivan Kartelo, a transfer from Notre Dame, will also become eligible that year. Purdue will likely sign four players in its next recruiting class. As a junior this past season, Hunter averaged 17.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.0 blocks per game. Though he's 6-11, the lanky forward/center has impressed many coaches with his athleticism and perimeter skills. He'll probably be able to play all three frontcourt positions in college, but small forward may suit him best. "He needs some freedom out there so he can do some of the things he's best at," Boyd said. "He wants to do a lot of things, but he also needs to improve his ability to play with his back to the basket because of the matchup problems he causes. But it doesn't matter to him where he plays. He just wants to win." For the second consecutive year, Hunter will attend adidas' ABCD Camp in Teaneck, N.J., in July, rather than the NIKE All-America Camp just a few hours away in Indianapolis. Hunter's loyalty to adidas have prompted some to assume his shoe preference will affect his decision. "That does not mean he's going to an adidas school," Boyd said. "That's what a lot of people think." - Insiders Report (4 to 3)

4/29: Was listed as one of the best Juniors in the MidWest. - Midwest Hoops

13. Chris Hunter 6'10 Gary, IN
15. Matt Trannon 6'6 Flint, MI
17. Alex Carmona 6'4 Troy, OH
22. Robert Hite 6'1 Cincinnati, OH

4/10: "Gary Westside High School Coach John Boyd, who coaches IU recruiting target Chris Hunter, thinks about the possibilities in the fall of 2002, and he thinks itšs scary. "I'd love to see Chris, Sean (May) and Jared (Jeffries) play together," Boyd said. "You're talking about 6-9, 6-10 and 6-11 or 7-1. And all of them can go inside and outside. That would be unheard of in college basketball." The Hoosiers already have Jeffries, and Bloomington North forward Sean May and Hunter appear to be two of Indianašs top targets for next seasonšs recruiting class. Hunter is a 6-11 1/2 center who is widely considered one of the nation's most athletic big men. Hešs a consensus top-30 player nationally. And Indiana is a program that hešs strongly considering. "I think (Indiana's) a good program," Hunter said. "I think it's a program on the rise, and I think it might be a good fit for a lot of players who might want to go there." Hunter averaged 21.9 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks last season for Boydšs squad. Hešs a member of the Bloomington Red AAU team this summer, and will also participate in his second consecutive adidas ABCD camp this summer. While Hunter is considering a wide array of schools from around the country, Boyd said both he and Hunter like what theyšve seen from IU Coach Mike Davis. "We have IU high on our list, because we love Mike Davis," Boyd said. "Mike Davis is someone we really, really have a good feeling about." - InsideIU.com

4/10: "Would be a high-major prospect if all he did was stand there. The dude looks like a praying mantis. His arms and legs are impossibly long and lanky. (And the kid's still growing!) The 6-11 (going on 7-2) C from Gary (IN) West also showed superb athleticism and a willingness and ability to put the ball on the floor and slash to the hoop from one of the blocks. Long strides cover plenty of ground -- and quickly. A solid prospect now with an ENORMOUS upside for the future." - PrepStars (Boo Williams Tourney notes)

4/9: "He's long and lean and has a tremendous value as a shot blocker. The bulk of inside scoring last weekend came from Sean May. He's long and lean and a good athlete. He'll be recruited at the high-major level." - Rivals100Hoops

4/9: "all I can say is I think IU has a good chance if they really go after him. He seems to not be in any hurry to narrow his list of schools down right now." - Peegs/Insiders

4/7: "The Bloomington Red squad features two potential Indiana Hoosiers in 6-8 Sean May, son of former standout Scott, and 6-11 center Chris Hunter of Gary West. Indiana head coach Davis was heard to say that if he could land the talented duo, he would just have to land a power forward and point guard for his next class. The Bloomington Red team is not unfamiliar to the coach as his son, Mike Davis Jr, is on the squad. Davis Jr. is a 6-3 junior-to-be." - collegebasketballnews.com

4/3: "Hunter was also a bit of a disappointment, at least based on some of high rankings he has earned from national recruiting gurus. He will remind you of Newton and Leach in the way you see great potential but don't see the needed strength or fundamentals for the game. Terribly skinny a year ago, he looks better in the upper body but still has toothpicks for legs. Despite all this he still as enormous potential. He is up to 6'10 now and has a nose for blocking shots with his long reach. He can hit his free throws and medium range jumpers. But finishing inside against strong players is not easy for him right now." - Peegs

3/31: Listed as the fifteenth best player in the country, Class 2002. - MidWest Hoops

3/28: "I think it is a good sign for IU that (Hunter) decided to play for Bloomington Red. He may have done it against his HS coach's wishes but I better not go there. He complements Sean May well and if Sean picks IU then I think IU should be considered the favorite for Chris -- at least until I hear more." - Peegs, Insiders Report

3/17: "One day last week, Cronin answered a 4:30am wakeup call in Chicago..." is the quote from the Cin Enq this morning. If Cronin was in Chicago this (in my opinion) points him towards either Chris Hunter of Gary, IN or Sean Dockery and Marcus White of Chicago. - Mike Ryan

3/8: "Chris Hunter, a 6-11 phenom from Gary, Indiana (West Side High School), displays a rare blend of outstanding athleticism coupled with polished offensive skills. In fact, if one were compelled to offer a comparison, the names Marcus Camby and Toni Kukoc immediately come to mind. "Chris is a complete athlete on the court because he can hurt you inside or outside," raved West Side High skipper John Boyd, one of the Midwest's best young high school coaches. "He can put the ball on the floor, he plays above the rim, and he is truly blessed with a soft touch from the perimeter. He can step out and knock down "threes' text book style, no line drives." Indeed, few interior performers in the Class of 2002 possess a more varied offensive repertoire. With respect to his recruitment, North Carolina, according to Coach Boyd, led early on in the process. However, the Tar Heels appear at this time to be locked in a continually expanding recruiting war with a number of high profile programs. Maryland, Duke, Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue must all be considered significant factors in the 6-11 standout's decision making process. Additionally, UCLA as well as Stanford and NC State may also be heard from before all is said and done. Chris averaged a most impressive 21ppg and 11rpg, and his scholastic achievements include an 1100 SAT score along with a corps GPA of 3.4." - Acc Recruiting Update

3/6: "a multi-talented forward from West Side High School in Gary, Indiana, is one of the top players in the country in the class of 2002. He is a legimate candidate for next year's McDonald's All American game. It is for that reason he is being swamped with mail and offers from the top division one schools across the country. Hunter has had a solid junior season and his stock continues to climb. Low key, and modest about his achievements, Hunter keeps reality close to his head. "I am just trying to be the best player I can," Hunter said. "I just want to help my team win a title." Hunter's team starts the playoffs tonight. "I am going to just concentrate on the playoffs first," Hunter said. "Then I plan on playing for Bloomington Red during the summer." Hunter said he was unsure if he would play in any spring AAU events. Several big name schools are involved with Hunter,(including North Carolina)." - Insiders Report

2/14: "Chris is a great shotblocker who has a nice shooting touch as well. He is VERY RAW and as skinny as they come though. Part of that is because he is young for his class. His lack of strength really causes him trouble finishing inside against top not front line players. But by the time he gets out of high school he may be seven feet tall. Reminds me of Ohio State's Ken Johnson. I have heard IU assistant Julius Smith has done a good job recruiting Hunter. So the Hoosiers should be one of the teams to beat." - Peegs, Insiders Report

2/8: "Very very athletic. Blocks shots, rebounds well, and can really run the floor. Kinda like Maceo Baston who used to play for Michigan. Top 25 Junior" - MidWest Hoops

2/7/01: "Gary West HS Wins 75-67 Against Chicago's Manley HS. 6-11 Chris Hunter dominated post play with his 9 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. Chris also was the scoring leader with 19 points. We believe that Depaul and CINCINNATI lead for Hunter. Gary Westside's Chris Hunter and Brandon Cameron rely on Coach John Boyd for all College Recruiting Decisions and Summer Basketball Decisions. Most Parents and Legal Guardians make decisions for their children. At Gary Westside, recruiters may as well call Coach John Boyd 'daddy' because he controls every decision that his players make." - INBNews.com

2/5: Listed as the 2nd best player in Indiana. - Hoosierland Report

1/30/01: "Chris Hunter was way too long and strong as he tossed in 31 points. We believe that Depaul and CINCINNATI lead for Hunter." - INBNews.com

1/24: listed as the best PF in the state. - Oncourt Indiana

1/13: "Chris Hunter was bottled up the entire game in Wirt's zone..
He rarely touched the ball and when he did, Wirt's swarming physical post defense forced Hunter to bobble many passes. Finishing with only 10 points, Hunter's two hand flush with 4:15 left gave The Cougars their first lead of the game at 52-50. In attendance to primarily scout Chris Hunter was Iowa Asst. Rich Walker. Coach Walker was visibly impressed with "The Huge Upside" of the highly skilled and physically growing Hunter." - INBNews.com

1/1/01: "Growing big man who made some noise this summer playing for Bloomington Red. Very young, does not turn 16 till this fall. Very skinny but has long arms and is still growing....listed at 6'10 at ABCD camp and says he is suppose to top out at 7 feet. Excellent shotblocker. Nice shooting stroke. Has trouble finishing inside at times due to his lack of strength. High school teammate Brandon Cameron. Seems to have IU interest. Expect much of the Big Ten to try to get involved. Hunter says he is wide open right now. Junior year stats so far: 15 ppg, 11 rbg" - Peegs.com

10/10/00: "Saturday Morning we were able to speak with Chris Hunter before he left his home to enjoy the weekend. At the September 10 IBN Top 100 Workout, Chris demonstrated what we have been saying for two years. The kid is an inch from 7-0 tall but he is in possession of Small Forward skills. At the workout Chris swept in to block many shots, he grabbed rebounds in traffic, he pushed the ball off the dribble in break and he hit several perimeter shots to 18 feet.

Last July 4 he reported that his favorite Colleges were North Carolina, Duke and CINCINNATI. He now tells IBN that a great deal of schools have been to open gym to inquire about him. He is wide open to all schools at this time but the Big Ten, ACC and Big East Conference Schools will be the finishers for Chris Hunter unless a Mid-Major like Ball State can sway the lanky 200 pound prospect.

The Cardinals have been developing 6-10 Lonnie Jones of Gary Lew Wallace. The NBA bound Jones was overlooked out of High School but last season he helped Ball State easily defeat Purdue. Chris Hunter is much better than Lonnie Jones at the same stage of their career. Their similarity is the fact that both have been very light and long post/perimeter players. As good as their skill is, both have been thrown around in the paint by smaller, stronger post players. Monday and Wednesdays Chris is lifting and running while Tuesdays and Thursdays he is playing in the Westside open gym. - INBNews.com

11/6/00: "College Recruiters have flocked to Gary Westside this fall.
High Major Juniors 6-11 Chris Hunter and 6-0 Brandon Cameron are the target of The Nation's Elite College Basketball Programs. "One day alone I received 78 phone calls inquiring about Brandon and Chris ", reports Head Coach John Boyd. "They are wide open to all suitors at this time. They will play the season and summer circuit out before they make a decision next November," continued Boyd. Leaders for Chris Hunter at this time include Arizona, North Carolina, Depaul, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue.

The talented duo are also currently deciding what Amateur Basketball Club to travel with next summer. Most elite juniors make this decision before their High School season so they are not bothered by recruiters.

Chris and Brandon travelled last summer with Bob Pryor's Bloomington Red NIKE program. They may very well return to Bloomington but currently they are also considering Bill Hensley's Gym Rat Pistols Team. Summer team decision for the duo should be forthcoming within the next week. Both Cameron and Hunter have decided to return to the Adidas ABCD Camp next July." - INBNews.com

Blugrass tourney commentary: "...will remind you of Ohio State's Ken Johnson has a tremendous upside if he can progress naturally. Hunter, who is said to be young for his class, appears as if he'll grow to become a true long-armed 6'11 shot blocker at the collegiate level. Chris runs the floor well, has shown to have good basketball instincts, good hands, agile feet, and a soft touch from around the rim and especially at the foul line. Hunter is a player who will have to work vigorously in the weight room over the next few years to develop his thin frame into an acceptable collegiate big man's frame. I foresee Hunter having problem developing the type of size to his frame you'd like to have as he simply has that type of body composition. It is very early at this stage and anything more that making note of his natural skills would be too early to say at this point." - Peegs.com

5/2000: "Chris Hunter 6'9" PF (not yet 16 years old). Hunter averaged 9.5 points per game over the tourney. Chris is a wiry, gangly frontcourt player who excels at playing larger, slower players. Chris needs to increase his body weight and strength. Chris to his credit knows how to score w/ put-backs, rebounds, and glasswork. With much needed strength, Chris will be a highly recruited player. Keep an eye out on this one. Highlight of the tourney was his 19-point outburst." - Nike Bluegrass Classic recap, Kentucky.rivals.com
