Has declared for the Draft.
2/15/02: "Kei Madison, a 6-9 forward at Okaloosa-Walton (FL), has been dismissed from the team for violating team policy. The sophomore transfer from Iowa Western and Southern Union (AL) was averaging 12.4 points and 10.4 rebounds a game with 59 blocks in 21 games this season. He was shooting 47 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line. Madison had verbally committed to Mississippi State last fall but there were concerns that he would be unable to play with another SEC school after he signed with Alabama last spring. Okaloosa-Walton is currently ranked #7 by the NJCAA with a 22-3 record and leads the Florida Panhandle Conference with a 7-2 mark." - Big Apple Sports (juco website)
1/16/02: "sophomore Kei Madison leads the team with 11.2 rebounds per game and is also scoring 14.8 points per contest." - Chris Monter
12/6: Listed as the best PF in Juco. - Van Coleman, Future Stars
11/26: According to Russ Blake / Rivals it will be another 5 weeks before Kei knows if he can play in the SEC. Kei's Juco coach has said that he will attend Miss State, if the ruling is in Kei's favor.
11/19/01:
Earlier this fall, Madison committed to Mississippi State after visiting the Southeastern Conference school. He had also seriously considered Cincinnati.
INTERVIEW:
Juco Junction: Any other choices you might have if Mississippi State does not work out?
Kei Madison: Cincinnati, that's the only team. Because they were the only other school that was really recruiting me hard. So I would have to put Cincinnati back in.
JJ: You mentioned that you would be interested in Indiana and Cincinnati if you are unable to sign with Mississippi State. Are you going to totally throw the recruitment wide open, or is it going to be a limited reopening of the process ?
KM: I don't think I am going to limit it, because I want to have all of my options open, so I think I am just going to have it wide open again and see who all is interested. - Rivals Hoops/ Juco Junction
(BACK TO ACTIVE)
10/31/01: - The Indiana University basketball team might have another shot at Kei Madison, a 6-foot-9 forward whom they signed out of high school in 1999 but who never played for the Hoosiers. Madison is in his first semester at Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla., and has committed to Mississippi State. But his eligibility there is in question. Madison's mother said yesterday that the junior-college forward is ''interested'' in playing for the Hoosiers in 2002-03. Vera Madison said she and her son consider IU coach Mike Davis a family friend and talk with him regularly. Davis needs a forward for his recruiting class because Bloomington North High School's Sean May chose North Carolina over IU earlier this week. ''He's not locked in with (Mississippi State), so I think he would have an interest in Indiana,'' Vera Madison said. ''We're open to what is out there. We're not counting out Indiana.'' The Kei Madison saga has taken many twists and turns. The Columbiana, Ala., product signed with the Hoosiers but did not qualify academically. He played one season at Iowa Western Community College, where he blossomed into one of the nation's top-rated junior-college players by averaging 15.6 points and 10.2 rebounds. Madison was kicked off the team before last season because of a violation of team rules, then enrolled but did not play at Southern Union State Community College in Wadley, Ala. In the spring he signed with Alabama. But Madison didn't qualify academically to play there and wound up at Okaloosa-Walton. It is not clear whether he would be eligible to play at Mississippi State. Southeastern Conference rules stipulate that a partial or non-qualifier who transfers to an SEC school from a two-year college is not eligible for financial aid, practice or competition if he has not attended the two-year college full time for at least three semesters or four quarters. Madison will have only two semesters at Okaloosa-Walton under his belt. He would be eligible under Big Ten rules." - Louisville Courier Journal (moved to inactive)
9/27: "Kei Madison, a 6-foot-9, top-rated junior-college forward, has canceled his scheduled recruiting trip to Cincinnati and orally committed to Mississippi State, Okaloosa-Walton Community College coach Bruce Stewart said Wednesday night. Madison visited Mississippi State last weekend." - Enquirer.com (4 to 1)
9/26: "(Kei) called Cincinnati Monday and told them he's headed to
Mississippi State and cancelled his visit." - Ohio Preps, Michael Duncan (5 to 4)
9/25: Kei Madison and Eric Hicks will visit this weekend, - Enquirer.com
9/18: "It appears to be a two horse race for Madison's services, according to (Madison's JC) Coach Brown, with Mississippi State and Cincinnati battling it out to secure Kei's signature on a national letter of intent this fall." - RivalsHoops
http://rivalshoops.alliancesports.com/
9/12: "Kennedy Winston from Alabama and 6'8 Kei Madison a junior
college player both will be visiting Cincinnati Sept. 20." - Ohio Preps
9/8/01: moved from 2 to 5, based on a tip. - Mike Ryan
9/4: "Kei is a great talent. Jumps like Dennis Rodman under the boards in that he gets to his second jump quicker than other players. Jumps well and apparently has developed a nice shot. The problem with Kei is mental. He is very easily distracted and has gotten himself in trouble quite often off the court. If he signs with Cincy it will be the fourth time he has signed a letter of intent with a D1 school." - Peegs
9/2: "CINCINNATI is on the verge of getting a verbal from our #2 JUCO player 6'9 Kei Madison of Okaloosa-Walton (FL) JC" - Greg Swaim
8/31: Listed as the best JUCO PF in the USA. - Future Stars
8/30: "Also, Kei Madison 6'10 from Okaloosa Walton (JC) Florida is looking at U. of Cincinnati real hard. He's considered (one of the)top 10 players in the country." - Michael Duncan, Ohio Preps
8/9/01: "The only three schools that are recruiting him are Mississippi State, Fresno State and CINCINNATI," O-W Asst. Coach Isaac Brown said....Brown said that Fresno State and CINCINNATI did not make it down to watch Madison, but both schools have called the Raider basketball office and made it well known that they will pursue Madison hard this fall and winter..." - RivalsHoops (from INACTIVE to ACTIVE)
12/2/00: "a highly regarded junior-college sophomore (6-8 1/2 SF/PF Kei Madison ) who had signed twice previously with Indiana but failed to qualify academically. Madison apparently changed his mind when Bob Knight was axed." - CNN SI
11/17/00: "looked like a lock for Indiana instead SIGNED a letter of intent earlier this week to attend ALABAMA. In his story, Blake says that Madison opted for the Crimson Tide so he could remain close to his family." - AllStar Report
11/5: "a skilled 6-9, 225 pound combination forward who was recently dismissed from the basketball team at Iowa Western C.C. in Council Bluffs, Ia., will indeed enroll at Southern Union State J.C. in Wadley, Ala., this winter. In an article on this site last month regarding Madison's dismissal, JUCO Junction suggested that Kei would likely join his younger brother Bobby at Southern Union. The Madisons are from Columbiana, Ala. "I've talked with his parents, both his mom and his dad, and they want him over here," SUSC Head Coach Ron Radford told JUCO Junction recently. "He is just going to come in here and finish up his academic work -- he's not going to play for us." Madison would not be eligible to play this winter at Southern Union State due to NJCAA transfer rules. Should Madison complete his degree requirements in the spring or summer of 2001, he would likely have three years of eligibility on the Division I level. Madison had re-affirmed his commitment to Indiana this past August in an interview with JUCO Junction, but the university's firing of Bobby Knight in September cast some doubt as to Kei's ultimate intentions. The retention of Mike Davis at IU certainly has not hurt the Hoosier's chances of landing Madison this spring, though both Ole Miss and Alabama are making strong pitches this fall to woo Kei. Iowa Western Head Coach Jim Morris had informed JUCO Junction of Alabama and Mississippi's interest in Madison earlier this fall. Madison decided to sign late in large part due to the interim tag hanging around Davis' neck at IU. "If Mike Davis is not named the permanent coach at Indiana, I think you'll see Kei go somwhere else," Radford said. "But if Mike is there, he will go to Indiana, in my opinion." Radford added that he does not expect to play a large role in Madison's recruitment this winter. "I have spoken with Coach Gottfried at Alabama, and the coaches at Ole Miss and quite a few people, but that is pretty much going to be [Kei] and his family who make that decision," he said." - Juco Junction
10/26: "Lost amid the wires last week was the dismissal of Iowa Western forward Kei Madison for a violation of team rules. The 6-9 Madison committed to Indiana and then hedged once Bob Knight was fired and Mike Davis was only named as an interim coach. Iowa Western assistant coach Trent Lovewell said the "law wasn't involved" in Madison's suspension. Madison is expected to finish the fall semester at Iowa Western and then move to a junior college near his home in the South, possibly Southern Union (Ala.) for the second semester. Madison played in some exhibition games and that might prohibit him from having three years of eligibility instead of two remaining at a Division I school. Madison has to earn his degree at a junior college before he can enroll in a four-year school. Davis might still land Madison at Indiana, or somewhere else if he's not retained by the Hoosiers. But Lovewell said a host of schools, including Cincinnati, Florida State, Illinois, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Tennessee, Connecticut, USC, Alabama, LSU, Auburn and Oregon, are all still pursuing him." - ESPN, Katz
10/22: "Iowa Western Coach Morris cited a violation of team rules as the reason for Madison's dismissal from the basketball team at Iowa Western. "It's very unfortunate," Morris said from his home on Wednesday evening. "Some people had considered him as one of the top four or five players in the country. It's ashame when kids don't live up to the expectations that are placed on them by the coaches and fans, and he did not do that." "On the floor, Kei is an extremely hard worker," Morris continued. "There's no problems there. He just needs to take care of some personal things." Madison is not expected to play this year in junior college, meaning that he could have three years to play on the D-I level if he graduates next spring or summer." -Juco Hoops

"He will not play basketball at Southern Union and will have three years of eligibility if he graduates in the spring or summer. He is expected to sign with IU if interim head coach Mike Davis is retained."
10/4: "Madison, part of the 1999 incoming class until he was ruled academically ineligible, is enrolled at Iowa Western Community College. The 6-foot-8 forward said he planned to play for IU in the 2001-02 season, but the Hoosiers appear to be out of scholarships.
When Perry and Huntington North forward Sean Kline sign in November, that will take up the last remaining spots. The only way IU could make room for Madison is if a player leaves early, transfers or becomes a walk-on. Madison could not be reached for comment yesterday but had said earlier he would wait until the spring signing period to see whether Davis would be retained. "This opens the door for a lot of (other schools) to jump into the Kei Madison sweepstakes," Francis said. "If I'm Kei Madison, I wait to see what Mike Davis does. And from what I hear, Kei Madison is 10 times better than when he first signed with Indiana." - L-Ville Courier Journal
10/3: "Maybe Kei Madison will still end up at Indiana, if somebody transfers and (Coach Mike) Davis does well enough this season to get the job on a permanent basis. However, our guess is that Davis will get a head coaching job somewhere else next spring and, if that happens, don't be surprised if Madison goes with him. Remember, Madison signed with Indiana, because of Davis and even talked about going to Tulane, if Davis had gotten that job in July." - HoopScoop
9/30: "Another verbal commitment that is being reported by others is 6'9 Kei Madison from Iowa Western (JC) IA to Indiana. Obviously the connection on this is IU head coach Mike Davis, but why would Madison pick the Hoosiers, if Davis is only the head coach on an interim basis. Instead, Madison would be smart to wait until spring and see what happens. Remember, when I ran into Madison airport in Chicago, IL in July, he told me that he'd sign with Tulane, if Davis got the Green Wave job." - HoopScoop

10/10/99: "Freshmen recruits George Leach, a 6-11 center from Olympic High in Charlotte, N.C., and 6-8 freshman Kei Madison (New Hampton Prep/N.H.) aren't eligible, according to Indiana." - ESPN, Katz
3/99: "Maine Central Institute led by as many as 32 points in this game, and cruised to 83-56 victory over New Hampton Prep in the semis of the NEPSAC tournament Friday. MCI was led by DerMarr Johnson with 31 points, Caron Butler added 14 points and 9 boards, and Indiana signee Kei Madison had 6 points and 12 boards for New Hampton." - Mr Hoops
2/99: Listed as the 8th best Prep player in the country (#1 is DerMarr, #4 is Rodney White from UNCC)
4/9/98: "The Indiana basketball team has signed Kei Madison to a national letter of intent. Madison is a 6-8, 200 pound forward from Shelby County High School in Columbiana, Ala. As a senior he averaged 21 points, 18 rebounds, 5 blocks and 2 steals per game. He was an all-county and all-metro (Birmingham area) selection in 1997-98. He also shot 56 percent from the field." - Indiana University
