Anthony Roberson

Class of 2002
Position: PG
School: Saginaw HS
City: Saginaw, MI, MI
Height: 6-1
Interest: 1

7/2: "PG Anthony Roberson finally stopped flirting and made a commitment. Roberson, BCH’s No. 2 point guard heading into the summer, committed to the Florida Gators over the weekend. “I needed to sit down and talk to my family and follow my heart to where I really wanted to go,” Roberson said. “I guess the big thing was my having trust in coach and being comfortable. I think the situation fits me perfectly with the up-tempo style and getting out and running and pressing and having fun.” Before Roberson committed to Florida, Tom Izzo and the Spartans made one final push to keep “Peeper” home. “They made it hard, but in the end you just have to go wherever you feel most comfortable.” - lue Chip Hoops

6/25: "told the Insiders Report that he is still seriously considering three schools -- Florida, Duke, and Michigan. "I like Florida and Duke because the coaches let the guards play," Roberson said. "Duke also has a great tradition as does Michigan. Michigan has a new coach in coach (Tommy) Amaker. I have already met him. I like him too." Roberson has visited all three schools left on his list. "My list is not closed," Roberson said. "There could be a school that could come along and be involved. But I want to make a decision in the next two to three weeks." Roberson is awaiting his ACT test score he took on June 9th. "I should have it this week," Roberson said. If Roberson qualifies, it might push Duke into perhaps offering Roberson? "They haven't offered yet but I will wait a couple more weeks and see how things settle," Roberson said. Roberson is one of the most exciting players in the class of 2002. Roberson had a great season and is now being viewed as a legitimate McDonald's All American candidate. Roberson led the Michigan Hurricanes to the TOC title with his great play. He is obviously a top 10 player and maybe the best point guard in this year's class." - RivalsHoops (3 to 2)

6/23: "Roberson, who ranks among the top five juniors nationally by the HOOP SCOOP, told us at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in Chapel Hill, NC that Duke and Michigan were the top two schools on his list. Throw in Florida and you have what appears to be Roberson's final three." - HoopScoop

6/23: "One of the juicy rumors floating around the Atlanta Basketball Classic surrounds PG Anthony Roberson. The latest rumor hints that Florida has gotten stronger and Roberson might be tempted to make a move in the near future." - BlueChip Hoops

6/21: "After a trip to Gainesville, Anthony Roberson's mind is nearly made up. The Saginaw High (Mich.) scoring point guard is down to Florida and Duke, but there's one glitch: Duke still hasn't offered — and Florida has. "The visit to Gainesville went great," said Roberson. "I went down there for two days, and I can say I'm down to Duke and Florida, but I want to wait a little while. I'm starting to definitely like Florida more. They told me I was the number one priority and they really want me." Roberson got a chance to meet current Gators Teddy Dupay and Brett Nelson, and the trio toured the campus together. Roberson said Florida coach Billy Donovan hasn't put any pressure on him to make a decision right away. "I felt real comfortable and will make a decision in a week or two," added Roberson. "This Florida trip was the last and final one. Now I need to think about it and see where I'm most comfortable at." Roberson has kept up with the situation at Duke and knows the Blue Devils’ preference is Chicago Julian High (Ill.) point guard Sean Dockery. However, Duke hasn't offered Dockery as of yet and appears to be waiting to see if he passes his ACT. Dockery also has Duke and Florida as his co-leaders. "It would be real tough, too tough, if Duke offers," said Roberson. "But I think they want Dockery a lot anyway." Roberson missed last weekend's USA Youth Basketball Developmental Festival because of family problems, but the 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior-to-be will leave Friday for a tournament in Washington, D.C. and will participate in the adidas ABCD Camp in early July. It appears as though unless Duke puts on a late push for Roberson, he will likely end up committing to the Gators by the end of June. That would clear the way for the Blue Devils to lock up Dockery — if his grades and test scores are in order. If not, the Illinois native could be headed to Memphis, Illinois or DePaul. However, the Illini just got a commitment earlier this week from Proviso East High (Ill.) point guard Dee Brown, which appeared to sour Dockery on the thought of going to Illinois." - SchoolSports.com

6/20: "Division I college coaches can begin calling rising high school seniors Thursday, but only five schools should bother calling Saginaw High (Mich.) point Anthony Roberson. Roberson's summer-league coach, Chris Grier of the Michigan Hurricanes, said Roberson is down to a final five -- Michigan State, Duke, CINCINNATI, Florida and Michigan -- and will have a decision before summer recruiting begins July 8. Roberson, one of the top point guards in the class of 2002, took UNOFFICIAL VISITs to all five schools." - Andy Katz, ESPN

6/6: Consensus #7 player in the USA in his class. - UNCBasketball.com

6/2: "At this point I think UC is behind Duke, Michigan State, and Michigan (in no particular order)." - All Star Report

6/1: "USA Basketball's 2001 Men's Youth Development Festival North team’s head coach Steve Lansing from Union Mills (IN) South Central and assistant Durand Walker of The Family AAU from Detroit, Michigan will recognize several familiar faces. The 4th annual Youth Development Festival will be held June 14-18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 6-2 point guard Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (MI) High and 6-7 small forward Matt Trannon of Flint (MI) Northern will play on the North squad. - Chris Monter

6/1: "Even though Roberson has gotten the best of Dockery time after time, the Julian High (Ill.) point guard is tops on Coach K’s list of junior floor leaders and Roberson is clearly No. 2. “It motivates me that they haven’t offered me yet,” says the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Roberson. “But I’m not in a rush. I think it’s going to come soon.”
Roberson says that if Duke offers, “it makes a huge difference” in his decision-making process. Currently, he’s looking at Michigan State, Michigan, Florida and CINCINNATI, but he has always wanted to play at Cameron Indoor Stadium. “Every kid dreams of it, and it’s a dream I’ve had ever since I was little,” adds Roberson, who is more of a scoring threat than Dockery. “If they ever [offer], they are the clear leader. No doubt.” As for the current list, there is no clear-cut leader. But Roberson says he wants to go somewhere he can push the ball and play an up-tempo style. He has already been to both Michigan schools and CINCINNATI and is planning to take a trip to Florida this summer. Roberson will also play at the 2001 USA Basketball Developmental Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo., which features many of the top high school players in the nation. And he’ll see Dockery at least one more time this summer — at the Adidas ABCD Camp in July." - School Sports

5/30: "Roberson dazzled with his jaunts to the basket that would have made Allen Iverson proud. He averaged 20.8 points a game and answered the call a number of times with some late-game heroics." - Sporting News / Telep

5/30: "The touted 6-0 PG from Saginaw (MI) High left his jumper back in Michigan. Yet he managed to lead his club to the championship and win the tournament MVP award on what was really an "off" weekend -- there's definitely something to be said for that. Produced points from areas other than the perimeter: He drove to the hoop and finished strong and he also used his medium-range jumper to a tee. Strong body creates scoring opportunities within the 12-foot area. Great demeanor on the floor -- a super combination of care-free attitude and mean streak." - PrepStars

5/29: "Roberson gave a school list Saturday morning in Cameron Indoor Stadium: Duke, Michigan, CINCINNATI, Florida, Michigan State. He also said to expect a decision soon -- as in the early part of the summer."

"I won," Roberson told PrepStars.com after leading the Michigan Hurricanes to the title at the Tournament of Champions' prestigious National Bracket Sunday afternoon at the Smith Center. "I came out on top of the tournament. I'm happy we came away with the 'W.'" The 6-2 PG from Saginaw (MI) High averaged 20.8 points a game over the course of the weekend for coach Chris Grier's Hurricanes. And he did that even though the jumper -- his calling card in the past -- consistently missed the mark. Which, actually, makes Roberson's performance all the more impressive. He knifed his way to the hoop and finished drives. He led the Hurricanes with his happy-go-lucky (yet determined) on-court demeanor. His TOC bread and butter, though, was his middle game: He was spectacular at times in getting to the elbows or the free throw line and creating space and elevating for soft 12-footers. He also -- and the importance of this can't be overstated -- made BIG threes at BIG times." - PrepStars

5/29: "Anthony Roberson is a big-time player. That much is easy to determine. Since 1999, he’s helped the Michigan Hurricanes to tournament championships from coast to coast. He’s played alongside great players like Jason Richardson and Kelvin Torbert. He’s been exposed to the highest competition level possible in both high school and on the summer team circuit. Through it all, he’s persevered. For his efforts, he’ll have a chance to sign with an elite basketball program. Right now, Roberson lists Michigan, Duke, CINCINNATI, Florida and Michigan State as his five favorite schools as June approaches. Four of the schools have offered but, according to Roberson, Duke has yet to put forth an offer on the table. In June, Roberson will play at the 2001 USA Basketball Developmental Festival in Colorado Springs. BlueChipHoops will cover the event, which features 48 of the top high school prospects in the country participating in a four-day round robin setting. What’s interesting is that many of the top Hurricane players from year’s past have opted to stay close to home and attend Michigan State. For instance, Torbert and Richardson both signed with Tom Izzo. However, right now Michigan State has Marcus Taylor at the point and Roberson admitted that could be a factor in his decision." - Blue Chip Hoops

5/29: "Dockery, Roberson Duel: The Michigan Hurricanes defeated the Illinois Fire as Anthony Roberson and Sean Dockery locked horns. Roberson scored 19 (7-21 FG; 3-11 3-pt) and Dockery hit for 16 (6-12 FG; 1-3 3-pt). Neither prospect produced very good assist totals but that wasn’t their fault. Plenty of catchable passes ricocheted off teammates hands. Down the stretch, Roberson came up big when called upon." - BlueChip Hoops

5/28: "Roberson had an off weekend shooting the ball. He got hot in stretches, but wasn't the sniper that he usually is -- but nonetheless -- Roberson is still one of the best players on this planet. He's sleek with the ball, very confident and finds ways to score. He looks more comfortable when he's the number one scoring option as opposed to being the ball distributor." - ACC Today

5/27: "I’m looking to make a decision in the next two or three weeks," said Michigan guard Anthony Roberson, a rising senior. "It’s getting real hectic — people calling you, always asking where you’re going to school. It makes it hard to concentrate. I want to enjoy my senior year." At least it’s clear that Roberson is a top prospect. He earned MVP honors Sunday after leading the Michigan Hurricanes to a 67-64 victory over the Long Island Panthers in the title game of the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions." - Durham Herald Sun

5/26: "Consider Michigan Hurricanes PG Anthony Roberson the pacesetter. There is an outstanding crop of PGs in this event and Roberson took center state Friday night. The New York Ravens had no answer for him as they put up a fight but bowed out in their opener. Roberson, who has a little dare we say Allen Iverson in his game, proved to be unguardable by the Ravens." - BlueChip Hoops

5/26: "He missed a lot of shots, but 6'2 Jr Anthony Roberson from Saginaw HS, MI picked up where he left a year ago when he was the best player in this tournament, as he scored 28 points and was the best player we saw all night. Roberson combines great quickness with incredible moves to seemingly do whatever he wants to on the court. And just like Stephon Marbury he can play either guard spot, but his lack of strength, incredible quickness, and ability to get to the basket remind us more of Allen Iverson. Roberson also mentioned Michigan State, Florida, CINCINNATI, and North Carolina, plus he didn't rule out going hardship into the NBA draft next year, if he thinks he can be a lottery pick. However, Roberson, who has over a 3.0 gpa and should have no problem on the SAT, also expressed a strong desire to graduate someday from college." - HoopScoop (2 - 3)

5/22: "The 6-0 PG from Saginaw (MI) High has performed well for the first-year Hurricanes this spring at events from Southern California to Cleveland. "We go to Cleveland," said (Hurricanes Coach Chris)Grier, referring to the Hurricanes' trip earlier this month to the adidas Hoop Challenge at Cleveland State. "We play against D.C. Assault. Roberson has 29. We win by 20 in the quarterfinals. Play the Houston Superstars in the semis. Roberson has like 18. We win by two in OT. Then the championship game against the Illinois Fire: Anthony Roberson destroyed Dockery. Again. As usual. We win by 30. Not 15. Not 20. Thirty! In the championship game! Sean Dockery had three fouls checking Roberson in the first five minutes. I got the tape!" - PrepStars

5/9: #9 Junior. "The legend of Roberson began as a freshman and he's perpetuated his image. Tremendous shooter who has excelled against the best." - Sporting News

5/3: "Possibly the best pure shooter at point guard, quick and able to pull up from anywhere, no one prevents him from getting his shot, always been around the top 10 in this class, needs to work on point skills and rely less on his own offense" - PrepStars

4/29: Was listed as one of the best Juniors in the MidWest. - Midwest Hoops

4/27: "Roberson told SchoolSports.com that he is favoring the Blue Devils over Michigan State, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati and Florida. He is planning on making his decision this summer after he takes official visits to most of the schools under consideration.
"Staying close to home really isn't much of an issue to me," says Roberson. "I grew up rooting for Duke, and they're probably the leader right now." - School Sports.com

4/24: Listed as the third best overall player in his class. - HoopScoop

4/19: "Roberson, a third-team Parade All-American as a junior, is being pursued by many of the nation's elite teams, including Indiana, Michigan State, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and UCLA. He said he's looking for a couple of things when considering his choices. "First of all, I'm looking for a coach to be honest with me," Roberson said. "And secondly, I want to be able to come in and be able to play right away and have the ball in my hands and make the decisions. That's one of my important things - to be able to play right away. I also want to play somewhere that my family can come see me play. It's not a problem being far away from home, but I want my family to be able to see me every once in a while at least." - InsideIU.com

4/18: "we expect the Spartans to get 6'2 Jr Anthony Roberson..." - HoopScoop

4/17: "Anthony Roberson is another talented point guard who is near to top of IU's list. Roberson is one of the nation's elite players. He's a consensus top-five player nationally in his class, regardless of position. He was recently named a third-team Parade All-American after averaging 24 points and 5.7 rebounds this past season, and he is considered the frontrunner for Michigan's Mr. Basketball award next season. Nearly every major program in the country is courting Roberson. Saginaw High School Coach Marshall Thomas said Indiana has called to talk with him about Roberson, and he's also received numerous letters of interest from the IU staff. Other programs that are in pursuit of Roberson include Michigan State, Michigan, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and UCLA to name a few. In addition, Louisville has become involved since Rick Pitino took over the Cardinals' program. "Indiana hasn't been up but they have called," Thomas said. "And they've been sending letters, and I just give them to Anthony. But I did talk with them in the fall, but not since. That's not unusual, because he's only a junior. And in Coach (Mike) Davis' case, he had to take care of business and keep that job. That was the foremost thing for him at that point." - InsideIU

4/11: named 4th best PG in the USA, regardless of class. Brick O., CNNSI

4/10: "Anthony Roberson, considered one of the nation’s premier junior point guard prospects by many a reputable talent evaluator (and deservedly so), discussed his recruitment at length with ACC Recruiting Update last night. Anthony told us the Duke Blue Devils currently occupy the top spot along with two local programs- national powerhouse Michigan State and in-state rival Michigan. In addition to the three leaders, Anthony also expressed interest in Kentucky and Georgia Tech." - ACC Recruiting Update (3 to 2)

3/31: Listed as the tenth best player in the country, Class 2002. - MidWest Hoops

3/19: "MSU likes "Peeper" (Roberson) a lot but if Dockery called and committed, I think they would take him. It's not a lock that Roberson goes to MSU. It's a good bet he might but not a lock." - Vince Baldwin, MidWest Hoops

3/5: "Last week I had a chance to speak with Saginaw, MI 6'2 Junior Point Guard Anthony Roberson. Roberson is ranked among the top 10 players in the class of 2002 and is the consensus choice as the #1 PG. Here are a few things he said about his recruiting. When I asked Roberson how his recruiting was going this I what he had to say about the schools that are at the top of his list right now.

Michigan State: I really like the way they play and I really like Coach Izzo. He's the man. My boy KT (Kelvin Torbert) will be up there too so that's a plus. MSU will be in the mix for sure but I have to make a decision that is best for me. I want to play a lot right away and I'm going to look at all my options.

Cincinnati: They have been recruiting me hard and I like their style of play. I will have to give them a serious look and see what I think after that. Coach Huggins is a good coach and they like to run. I like that.

Duke: Man... Duke is just such a great program. I mean who wouldn't consider Duke. Again, I will give them a real serious look and see if it's a good situation for me. Jason Williams is the man but if he is going to stay for all 4 years I may not fit there. We'll see.

North Carolina: Another great program. They are really interesting because they may need a PG by the time I graduate so it could be a good fit. I know I will give them a serious look. Every kid always thinks about Carolina. - MidWest Hoops

2/25: "Junior All American Guard Anthony Roberson scored 32 points for Saginaw H.S in a 91-80 loss to Flint Southwestern in a match up of two of Michigans top teams." - MidWest Hoops

2/20: "While he's certainly a prolific scorer who plays with great confidence, his shot selection (especially in clutch situations) wavers too often for our druthers." Brick still lists him as the 4th best Jr in the nation. - Brick O.

2/18: "When thinking of the top point guards in the class of 2002, look no further than Saginaw (MI) High School basketball prodigy Anthony Roberson. He has been part of the national exposure camps since he was a young kid, with college coaches drooling over his potential.

When I talked to Tony at the ABCD camp this past summer, he told me that it has been pretty crazy with all of the attention that he had been getting so far in the summer. He even said how things had changed so much for him because he used to just stare at all of the coaches lined against the wall to see him play. Coach K, Tubby and the rest of the big name coaches used to make him nervous, but now he just shrugs off the pressure - he's used to it.

On the court, Roberson is as pure a point guard as you can get. He has been a Stephon Marbury-type prospect since he was beginning high school (probably even before that) and has played with the highest competition ever since. Of everyone in the top tier of the Class of 2002, he would also be considered the most vocal player, maybe because he has become a veteran among the seniors. His direction and leadership make him stand out as a future NBA player. He has also demonstrated a superior passing ability that not only is fundamentally sound, but also creative and near flawless. Did we mention that his three-point stroke would remind you of Duke's Jason Williams?

One thing that basketball fans have to realize about Roberson is that he is very close to his AAU teammates. When asked about his early list of schools, he quickly states that it is the same as Kelvin Torbert's, back when Torbert was down to Michigan State, UConn, CINCINNATI and Michigan. Roberson, however, will quickly add a few other marquee schools to the mix like Duke. It would be no surprise to see him follow Torbert to Michigan State. The two are friends through basketball and they click so well on the court. So, as you watch the McDonald's All American team announced next Monday on ESPN, think of the guys who will be up on that screen next year and expect to see Anthony Roberson. - FastBreak

2/15: "Despite persistent rumors which insist he is a "lock" for Tim Izzo's Michigan State Spartans, 6-2 junior Anthony Roberson (Saginaw High School-Saginaw, Michigan) remains adament about keeping his options open. Last night ACC Recruiting contacted the premier point guard prospect and catalyst of the highly touted Michigan Mustangs AAU outfit, and our subsequent conversation addressed the Michigan State rumors as well as the specifics of his recruitment overall. We asked Anthony to tell us his position on the perception that he will ultimately select Michigan State and he responded, "I really feel like I am open and who knows where I will end up. I am just looking for the best situation for me whatever the distance {from his home}." Anthony then proceeded to tell us he is primarily interested in five programs at this stage of the process- Michigan State, North Carolina, Duke, Florida, Seton Hall. Anthony expressed a great deal of interest in Duke and particularly North Carolina, and he is anxious to learn more about Tommy Amaker and the Pirates program. A solid student in the classroom, Anthony maintains a 3.0 GPA and he intends to take the SAT examination in April. And, when not balancing the books, Anthony finds the time to average 29 points and 7 assists per contest for his 15-2 high school basketball squad." - ACC Recruiting Update

2/14: "North Carolina, Florida, Michigan State and Georgia Tech." - Roberson on which schools he notices in the stands at his high school games the most frequently. Roberson (gave) us his official list of schools under consideration: Duke, CINCINNATI, Michigan State, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Seton Hall." - High Major Hoops

2/14: "Top 10 consensus junior Anthony Roberson of Saginaw, Michigan, scored 14 points on Tuesday as Saginaw High defeated Flint Central 51-42. With the victory, Saginaw improved to 15-2 on the season. Roberson has received early interest from a number of high major schools, including Michigan State, North Carolina, and Cincinnati." - AllStar Report

2/8: "Smooth PG cut from the Mike Bibby mold. Has great range on jumper and is a smart floor leader. Handles the ball well but it's his jumper that makes him special. Tops on the list are Michigan State, Cincinnati, Duke, No. Carolina & others." - MidWest Hoops

1/30: "(A) school that will likely be able to take advantage of a close friendship when recruiting one of our top five juniors nationally is Michigan State. If you will recall, 6'2 Jr Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI, who is ranked #4 nationally in the junior class by the HOOP SCOOP, is best friends with 6'4 Kelvin Torbert from Flint (Northwestern) MI, who signed with the Spartans last fall. Throw in the fact that Michigan State has been getting the pick of the litter in their own backyard in recent years and we think you can almost write this one down as well." - HoopScoop

1/15: "With Saginaw up by 15 pints at the start of the forth quarter, Roberson drove to the basket and landed on someone's ankle and twisted his. Saginaw fans held there breth as Roberson lay yelling on the floor. The first thought was that he had broken his leg and when he was carried from the floor things didn't look good. This morning, we have received word that it is a very serious sprain but IT IS NOT broken. Saginaw has almost a week off but the injury couldn't have come at a worse time. #5 ranked Saginaw takes on Kelvin Torbert and #4 Ranked Flint Northwestern this Friday. Saginaw coach Marshall Thomas said he wasn't sure if Roberson would play. "I'm not going to risk him playing in the game if it means he could be out for a long period of time if he isn't ready" said Thomas." - MidWest Hoops

1/11: "Saginaw 82-75 over Pontiac Northern. Top 10 junior Anthony Roberson and teammate Lawrence Easter scored 22 points apiece for Saginaw (8-0)." - AllStar Report

1/3/01: Listed as the best PG in the USA, in the 2002 class. - Ohio Preps

12/23: "It's begining to read like an old story but 6'2 Junior Anthony Roberson is at it again. After scoring 36 points in his first two games of the year, Roberson came back last night with his best performance of the young season. He scored 40 points as his Sginaw team knocked off Rockford 87-56. Roberson also added 7 steals and had two Dunks!" - MidWest Hoops

12/17: "Following Tuesday's practice, Tom Izzo headed for Saginaw to see a player he can't talk about (NCAA rules) play a high school game, although the entire basketball world knows it was Saginaw's junior point guard, Anthony Roberson." - Detroit News

12/10: "was in full form Friday night as he led his Trojan team to a 87-49 victory over Bay City Western. Roberson was on fire all night long and pumped in 5 three pointers in route to 36 points." - MidWest Hoops

12/5: listed as the third best player in Michigan by the Detroit News.
"Roberson averaged 17 points and eight assists last season, but he will be asked to score much more this season. Used mostly as a point guard, Roberson will be in motion more, coming off screens and such, in order to get off his shot more easily. His ballhandling skills are second to none."

12/1/00: "is just a fantastic young man had plenty to say about how he feels about college. Here are some takes from my conversation with Anthony. On his list of schools: Michigan State - You know I like Izzo and Michigan State a lot and they will be in there for sure. KT (Kelvin Torbert) is my man and I love to play with him. Plus me and Zach got to be cool at the Nike camp. Duke - Well I've got to show them some serious interest because their Duke. I like them a lot too. I like their coaches and you know....It's Duke! Cincinnati - You have to put Cincinnati in there because I like their coaches and their style of play. Coach Huggins is real cool and they play real aggressive. I like that. North Carolina is way up there too. You know you just grow up watching Carolina and all the tradition. I could see them being in there. Michigan - Put Michigan in there too. They have a lot of guards right now but you never know. I like Coach Ellerbe and JaQuan (Hart) is real cool but I just don't have them up there with the others right now." - MidWest Hoops

11/7: "(Roberson) would split time with (Marcus) Taylor, but we must question if this is what (Roberson) really wants. I think playing time will plague his thoughts significantly and Roberson will pack it up for Cincinnati." - unknown post-er at MidWest Hoops (however, Roberson would be going to MSU when Marcus Taylor is a Junior)

11/7: "I Talked To Anthony Roberson and he did say that he really liked Cincinnati a lot. He also said it's too close to call right now because he Loves Tom Izzo, and also has a big thing for Duke. My Opinion: Michigan State - 34%; Cincinnati 33%; Duke 33%" - Vince Baldwin, Midwest Hoops

11/6: "made his second unofficial visit to UC on Saturday and said he likes the Bearcats and Duke. Roberson is the cousin of Charlotte Hornets forward Terrance Roberson, the former Fresno State standout and three-time Parade magazine All-American. Roberson's summer basketball coach is Michigan's Chris Greer, the brother of Bengals fullback Nick Williams." - CincyPost

11/5: attended the Bearcats vs Calif All Stars exhibition game at the Shoe.

10/26: "our Ohio Editor Chris Johnson predicts that 6'2 Jr Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI, who is Torbert's best friend, won't be too far behind (in committing to MSU)." - HoopScoop

10/25: "Torbert played for the powerful Michigan Mustangs this summer along with junior point guard Anthony Roberson and power forward Robert Whaley. On many occasions, Roberson told FastBreak that he and Torbert have talked about attending the same school." - FastBreak

10/16: 4th best player in his class - Steve Wacaser, Sporting News

10/00: "Roberson is a scoring guard that can hurt opponents in many ways. His shot is lethal from basically anywhere he decides to pull up and let it fly. Great penetration skills, good cross-over and ball handling tricks that usually create for himself and cutting teammates. He is a threat to hit three point bombs with range to 26-27 feet. Quick release off the dribble, superb lateral movement, great court savvy and intelligent on the floor. One of the best scoring guards in the nation." - High Major Hoops

9/24: "I was lucky enough to sit 3 rows behind Peeper (Anthony Roberson) and Torbert on Saturday. I payed special attention to the reactions of those two, during the game and during halftime. Peeper was sitting with Stan Heath and KT was with (AAU Coach) Chris Grier, and sat next to Zach (Randolph) and Mateen for a large part of the game. All were having a great time. KT more than once broke into a dance when the band was playing the fight song. When Izzo was on the field at halftime both KT and Roberson were jumping up and down, pumping their fists. That was a nice sign. Bottom line is I think we are in very good shape with both of these players." - unknown post-er on MSU.rivals board.

9/20: "Being the best is something that's not new to Anthony Roberson, he's been the best guard in his age group for a considerable amount of time. The 6'2 junior point guard from Saginaw High School in Michigan has been on the radar screens of college coaches for two or three years now and his name has been all over the internet for almost the same amount of time. Roberson, has big time game and also is one of the nicest kids that we had the privilege of meeting this summer. "He has a great personality, he's very positive, always smiling and gets along with any and everyone," says Chris Grier, his summer league coach with the Michigan Mustangs. Roberson is the type of kid that enjoys and even seeks personal interaction with the media, fans and other players. Everyone that we talk to about Roberson reiterates our opinion of him, not only as a basketball player, but as a nice kid in general. the talented lead guard is scheduled to attend the Midnight Madness event at Cherry Hill HS (September 23rd )which is run by Rick Barrett. "Duke, North Carolina, Michigan State and Cincinnati are all expected to be there to watch him," says Grier, "and all four of those schools HAVE TOLD HIM THAT A SCHOLARSHIP AWAITS HIM at their school." This year, many players from the class of 2002 are already being offered scholarships, as programs continue to try to get an early advantage on the recruiting trail. This trend looks to be increasing due to the fact that many prospects are verbally committing to their collegiate destination long before the first signing period. "Many kids are already off the market, so we're looking to get an early jump on the juniors," said one college coach at the Charlie Weber Invitational this past weekend. Roberson is a tremendous guard that can run the point as well as score from almost anywhere on the floor. He has shown an accurate stroke from as far out as 26 feet. He can create his own shot very well and takes the ball to the rack with determination. He is the type of talent that can take over a game all by himself at times. Roberson has the early lead as the best guard from the class of 2002 and the war among the elite programs for his services is already being played on the strategic battlefield. "It doesn't take long for a talented kid like Anthony to be offered by the best," said Grier. The prize of this recruiting battle will not only be a major talent as far as basketball is concerned, but a kid that will represent the program with the highest of honor, both on and off the hardwood." - High Major Hoops

9/1: "Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI had a tremendous spring, but wasn't as good as Cooke or Stoudamire during the summer."
He is currently ranked the number 3 player in his class of 2002. - Hoop Scoop

8/1: Interview with Anthony Roberson
Q: Can you give me a top three ?
A: I couldn't even narrow it down. Well, I guess I would say that Michigan State, Duke and Kentucky are probably the top three. I am enjoying myself right now, but I know that I need to sit down and really think hard about my decision."
Q: Do you see a certain conference that fits you ?
A: "I would have to say ACC, Big Ten or Big East. Those three conferences are the ones that I like the most. I would have to say that I see myself playing in the ACC or Big Ten though."
Q: Who are guys you like to watch play ?
A: "Kelvin Tolbert in on my AAU team and I like to play with him a lot. Eddy Curry is pretty good. Terrance Ford and Maurice Williams are guys I haven't seen a lot, but they have showed me stuff when I have watched."
(This interview took place one day after the Clippers offered Huggins his job and before he had decided to stay.)

7/24: "After witnessing yet another Michigan Mustangs' victory in Las Vegas, orchestrated in no small part by talented 6-2, junior lead guard prospect Anthony Roberson, I felt compelled to approach the dazzling Saginaw (Mi) star with the disarming demeanor. Not suprisingly, Anthony maintains a preliminary college list replete with household names such as Cincinnati, Michigan State, Duke, UNC, MIchigan, Syracuse, Kentucky, and Arizona. When asked to identify the factors which will govern his college selection process, Anthony cited the availability of immediate playing time, and the current "personnel" on the roster of the program in question. In addition, Anthony expressed a willingness to attend college away from home while mentioning the ACC in reference to an inquiry regarding conference preference." - ACC Recruiting Update

7/21: "Roberson is quoted in Prepstars as saying that he is looking at UC and UK real hard because they play the style he likes-uptempo with pressing defense. Prepstars currently ranks him number 2 in the juniors and says he is extremely quick off the dribble and can pull up for 10-12 footers. Very complimentary discussion." - Prepstars and RayBob

7/18: "Although he is slight of build and just a junior-to-be, he commands respect from teammates and opponents alike with his speed, decision-making and clutch play. Roberson is one of the top 10 players in the junior class, a smooth combination of open court deadliness with the calm of a good point. He likes North Carolina, Michigan State, Marquette, Duke, Cincinnati and Syracuse for college. He still makes mistakes, and both he and his coaches admit that, but he’s learning and improving." - HoopsTV

7/18: "He knows when to get you the ball and where to get it to you so you can score," Torbert said of Roberson. "We respect him a lot because he’s matured a lot. He’s a real fun point guard to play with." - Kelvin Torbert / HoopsTV

7/20: "6'3 Dom Ingerson deserves his place against the elite guards in the 2001 class. Ingerson defended the "unguardable" 6'4 SG Kelvin Torbert pretty well. Ingerson lit up the Mustangs for 32 points, driving in the lane strongly, torching the nets from the perimeter and driving by Torbert and super junior guard Anthony Roberson on many occasions." High Major Hoops

7/15: "Highly-ranked junior to be Anthony Roberson, of Saginaw High, caught fire in the second half. He went 4-of-5 from 3-point range after the intermission, proving again that he is a dangerous streak shooter. He finished the game 5-of-11 from 3-point range. He had 13 points and four rebounds." (Anthony plays on the same team, the Michigan Mustangs, as Kelvin Torbert) - michiganstate.rivals

:Q: Have you begun thinking about college?
Roberson: I've got some colleges in mind. Cincinnati, Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, and Syracuse. I like those six a lot right now.

Q: Have you made any visits?
Roberson: I've been on a few unofficial visits, like to Cincinnati and I go down to (Michigan) State often because they're 30 minutes away from me. I go to a lot of their home games. - UNCBasketball.com

7/11: "He hasn't had a great camp, but he's certainly a talent. He probably plays better in a more organized team setting, with guys he's used to playing with. The first two days, he didn't play nearly as well as he's capable of, but I've seen enough of him to know that he's the real deal."" - Brick O.

7/10: "At the top of the Adidas list is 6?2 Jr Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI, who has emerged as the #1 player in his class nationally this spring. Roberson is a great playmaker and passer, but he also has deep shooting range and is capable of scoring in bunches. He?s not as strong physically as Stephon Marbury, who headed an all-star cast of guards at this camp in 1995, but Roberson reminds us of Marbury in many ways and, if he continues to work hard and stays injury free, he may someday be as good. But as a person and a student, Roberson is more like Grant Hill, which is why schools like Duke, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Kentucky, and Syracuse have already made him a prime recruiting target. Potentially, Roberson is better than his Michigan Mustangs AAU teammate 6?4 Kelvin Torbert." - HoopScoop's Clark Francis

7/7/00 : "Michigan junior PG Anthony Roberson and NC PG Jonathan Hargett locked horns on the courts. Guess who came out on top? From our vantage point, score this one for Roberson. These guys were talking to each other the whole time." - Rivals100Hoops

7/5: "The Michigan Mustangs beat the Illinois Fire, 74-62, in the championship game of the 2000 Bet/Pro-Am D.C. Summer Classic at George Washington University in Washington, DC last night. But even more important, in the process, 6'2 Jr Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI, who scored 27 points and nailed a number of long range jumpers, left little doubt who is the #1 rising junior in the nation. Roberson not only shoots the lights out, but he also has great court savvy, makes tremendous decisions and usually dominates the game from the point guard spot. - PrepStars

7/2: "6'2 Jr Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (Buena Vista) MI, who ranks as the #1 rising junior nationally by the HOOP SCOOP, tells us that Cincinnati, Michigan State, and Syracuse are the top schools on his list, followed by Duke, Connecticut, and Kentucky. - HoopScoop

June '00: "#31 Anthony Roberson. School: Saginaw High School - Michigan (24-3). Class: Sophomore. Vitals (Ht, Wt, Pos): 6?-2", 168, PG. Kicks: Nike. Jersey: #10. Tattoo's: "I love this game" inscribed underneath a basketball on his left shoulder. Season Story: 16.8 PPG, 7.4 APG, 3.2 RPG, 46% FG, 42% 3 PT. FG, 77% FT. Summer Ball: Anthony will play AAU ball this summer for the Michigan Mustangs.
The Skinny: A highly skilled guard with superior ball-handling skills. Possesses a quick release on his shot and can create off of his often used jump stop. Anthony has a high understanding of the game and willingly sacrifices personal stats to benefit the team as a whole. The Word: "He?s only a sophomore, but he?s not afraid of the big shot. This year, we were down by one to Midland Dow with four seconds to go. Now, I have plenty of seniors on this team, but Anthony wanted the ball. The play we designed didn?t work, and the shot that we wanted wasn?t available. Without panicking, Anthony created and was able to hit a moving shot to win the game." - Coach Marshall Thomas, Saginaw High School.

5/24/00: "me and Marcus Taylor (Michigan) see each other at alot of MSU games and speak. We were at the NIKE camp a few years ago also. We've played in open gyms before as well. Peeper (ARoberson) and myself play together on the Michigan Mustangs basketball team. We talk quite a bit. He's come to Flint and hung out with me as well. We are very close." - Kelvin Torbert

5/24: "Some think Anthony Roberson might be the best point guard in the state right now, with the current seniors, some think he's really a combo guard, some feel he shoots like a shooting guard, whatever the case, he's pretty good. Anthony Roberson has been rated as high as the #2 sophomore in the nation by Hoopscoop's Clark Francis. He is a talented 6'2 guard out of Saginaw that makes good decisions and shoots the ball very well." - MichiganPreps

10/17: "I wasn't the only one who was jumping and yelling at Michigan St.'s Midnight Madness. Two MSU recruits were as excited as kids on Christmas morning. In the house for the midnight show were two of the nations top underclassmen. 6'0 Sophomore PG Anthony Roberson and 6'4 Junior Kelvin Torbert were enjoying the show. Roberson & Torbert said Michigan State will be one of their top five schools when it is time to make a choice." - MidwestHoops
