06/02/08: Signed with Texas.
04/23/08: "Varez Ward will not be part of the University of Cincinnati's 2008 recruiting class after all. Ward, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Montgomery, Ala., made an oral commitment to UC March 20. "It was a real good program in the Big East," Ward said then of UC. "They're rebuilding and I just want to be part of that." But Ward did not sign a letter-of-intent and has decided he will not enroll at UC. Patterson coach Chris Chaney said Tuesday both sides agreed attending UC would not be in Ward's best interest." - Enquirer.com

Ward has backed out of his commitment.
03/20/08: "UC received a commitment today from Varez Ward, a 6-2 combo guard from Montgomery, Ala., who played this year for the Patterson School in Patterson, N.C. Here's the assessment of Ward, who was at UC's practice the other day, from Jerry Meyer of Rivals.com. "He's athletic. He can really jump. He's strong, a good defender. Skill-wise, he's solid. He could extend his shooting range some. He's not really a long-range shooter, but a slasher. He's a good combo guard. He can handle the point guard some. I don't think that's his primary position, but he can certainly guard the point guard position. He's a solid player, but he's not going to score a whole lot of points. That's not his forte. He's a good pickup. He's a solid 3-star player." - Enquirer.com

02/12/08: "This postgrad player plays very hard whenever he takes the court. Ward has tremendous quickness, leaping ability and hang-times, making him a very effective penetrator. He also has good strength, allowing him to withstand a blow in the paint and still finish successfully at the rim, plays good defense, using his lateral foot speed and strength to bother opposing guards and has good passing ability and vision. His jump shot, though the weak area in his game, has improved dramatically since the summer. He will need to continue his work on his jumper for the next level. Currently he lists Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Butler, Baylor, and Alabama-Birmingham among his choices for college." - ESPN
01/19/08: "One of the best still available backcourt players is Patterson's 6-3 combo guard Varez Ward. Ward was a senior last year, along with teammate Courtney Fortson, at Sidney Lanier High (Montgomery, Ala.). He has the versatility to play both guard positions, and is a very hard-nosed, aggressive player. Chaney told us that Kentucky may now be the favorite for Ward. He is still considering: UAB, Missouri, South Carolina, West Virginia, Mississippi, South Carolina and UTEP, among others." - ESPN
