The move reunited the star point guard with coach Frank Williams, who coached Fields at Beach his freshman and sophomore seasons. Fields, a Georgia State signee, will also share the same backcourt as Cashmere Wright, a University of Cincinnati recruit." - Savannah Morning News

11/15/07: Urban Christian Academy basketball player Cashmere Wright on Wednesday morning signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. Wright, a 6-foot, 160-pound guard, signed his letter inside UCA's Hirsch-Crowder Gymnasium, where he was surrounded by family, teammates, coaches and friends. "It's a dream come true," Wright said. "It's the best feeling I've ever had. It's kind of neat being the pioneer for the school, where I can pave the way for the next (players) that are coming out. I'm probably going to be the happiest person walking around in Savannah today."

Wright averaged 38 points, 10 assists, four rebounds and three steals as a junior. In February, he verbally committed to Clemson, but changed his mind and committed to Cincinnati in August. Wright said former Furman head coach Larry Davis, now an assistant at Cincinnati, began recruiting him when he was in the eighth grade at UCA after seeing him play for the Atlanta Celtics on the AAU summer circuit. "Me and my family just felt like Cincinnati gave me the best opportunity to play as a freshman," said Wright, who plans to major in sports medicine or sports management. "They run more of a run-and-gun-type offense that I like to play in."

Wright said he chose Cincinnati over Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma, Wake Forest, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia and South Carolina. Before he verbally committed to Clemson, Wright said he made official visits to Clemson, FSU, Georgia and South Carolina.

After he decided against attending Clemson, Wright said he made official visits to Cincinnati, Tennessee and Pittsburgh. "I'm looking forward to the experience of going up there and being by myself, and getting used to the limelight, playing in the Big East (Conference) and playing in Madison Square Garden and all that," Wright said. "No more calls from the other coaches. Now I can just focus on school and getting better at basketball. My phone bill one month was like $600. And I have unlimited (minutes). That kind of explains how many calls I was getting and how many text messages." - Savannahnow.com

11/14/07: "Both Yancy Gates and Cashmere Wright are official. "We have added two very talented players, the kind of players you must have to compete in the Big East conference," Mick said. "Our 2007 and 2008 classes now total eight recruits. All of these players have Big East caliber talent, and we must now coach and develop them into a team that can compete for a championship in the years to come. They will combine with Mike Williams and Deonta Vaughn and grow into a team that can compete at the highest level as they gain experience."

Depending on whether Mike Williams gets that second year of eligibility, UC will have two or three scholarships remaining. Mick also said he might hold back one or two for the 2009 class. - Josh Katzowitz' blog; Enquirer.com

Cashmere Wright, a 6-foot point guard from Savannah (Ga.) Urban Christian High School, committed in August. Gates, who averaged 19.4 points and 7.4 rebounds last season, is ranked No. 80 in the class of 2008 by Rivals.com, No. 26 among power forwards. Wright, who averaged 36 points last season, is ranked No. 73 in his class, No. 11 among point guards. 06/26/07: "The jet-quick Savannah native got into the lane at will and spoon-fed his teammates for easy buckets. Athletic and defensive-minded, the Clemson commit is a bundle of energy on the court–unlike his laid-back parents, who I ate dinner with one night and are two of the nicest folks you could ever meet." - SlamOnline.com
