Bill Edwards Jr. has had a typical summer for a young basketball player. He's played in an AAU tournament nearly every weekend and he's even coaching his younger brother's team. But the 6-foot-6 Middletown High forward has also been getting a lot of attention from college recruiters.

Edwards has received scholarship offers from three Division I programs — the University of Massachusetts, the University of Dayton and Miami University — but he's not ready to commit to anyone just yet.

After all, he still has his junior and senior high school seasons to worry about. "It's been a little overwhelming, but I'm not going crazy over it," said Edwards, noting he has no timetable set for making his college decision. "It's good to have the attention, but I know I have to keep working to get better so I can get where I want to be. Right now, I'm just focused on winning a state championship with the Middies."

In a sophomore season shortened because of an ankle injury, Edwards averaged 12.4 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game. He was a big part of Middletown's first winning season (13-9) in several years. "Bill is having a great summer," MHS coach Bob Ronai said. "He has been projected as one of the top players in the state, but it is very early still. He's only going to be a junior. Our (high school) season will be very big for him."

Ronai said the attention Edwards, who just turned 16, has received has benefitted several other Middies. Allen Roberts, Tony Peters, Phillip Barnett and Lewis Burger also have all garnered attention from some of the top colleges in the country. "They've all worked very hard and are getting some exposure at these big-time tournaments this summer," Ronai said. "But as good as they are, they all understand that there is someone else out there working just as hard as they are and they don't want those people to get ahead of them." - www.MiddletownJournal.com

07/16/07: "Middletown junior forward Bill Edwards told me by phone this morning he has offers from Miami, Dayton and UMass, but he isn't letting the attention distract his summer AAU schedule. "I'm just staying level-headed," Edwards said. "It's a good experience, but I don't let it get to me or anything." At 6-6, 220, Edwards said he has gotten quicker but wants to improve on his jumping ability after two ankle injuries." - Enquirer.com blog
