06/08/07: " Kemba Walker didn't have time to get a look at all of the University of Connecticut campus on his quick unofficial visit Wednesday, but what he saw, he liked - enough to want to come back for another visit. And perhaps enough to make UConn his college choice.

Walker, a 6-foot, 180-pound point guard heading into his senior year at Rice High School in New York City, is rising quickly in the rankings of the recruiting experts and his status should be helped even more during this summer's AAU circuit. Wednesday, he made the trip to Storrs with Rice coach Maurice Hicks and Emanuel Richardson, Walker's AAU coach with the New York Gauchos.

"Kemba was impressed," Hicks said Thursday. "He likes UConn a lot and he wants to stay in the Big East, so that's a big attraction for him."
Cincinnati, which Walker visited last week, St. John's, Providence, and Memphis have also been on Walker's trail, while Tennessee and Arkansas are getting involved. UConn has already offered him a scholarship. "He's starting to get flooded right now, with a lot of schools calling," Hicks said. "But he's telling me we're going to know something by mid-June and he wants to get it done early, before school opens again in the fall. He said he may want to come back and visit Connecticut again before he gets out of school for the summer - maybe take a day off school and get there early to see some (summer school) classes, walk around more, and spend some time hanging out with Curtis. They are very tight."

UConn sophomore-to-be forward Curtis Kelly was Walker's high school teammate at Rice. "Kemba is a typical New York City point guard - very tough and hard-nosed," Hicks said. "Coach (Jim) Calhoun said he reminds him of Taliek Brown, but Kemba shoots it better than Taliek. He's athletic, very fast, very crafty, and plays good defense. He's a winner." - JournalInquirer.com

06/07/07: "Kemba Walker, a 6-foot-2 guard from Rice High in New York, made an unofficial visit Wednesday. UConn is said to be at the top of his list, which includes Cincinnati and St. John's. Walker is rated the 20th-best point guard in the class of 2008 by Rivals.com. (Current UConn player Curtis) Kelly also played at Rice and spoke to Walker during his visit." - Hartford Courant

06/03/07: Kemba Walker did visit and played in a pick up game today. (3 to 5)

05/30/07: "Currently he has St. John's, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Arkansas, Memphis, and Memphis at the top of his list," Richardson said. "But, I've heard this week from Tennessee and Kentucky, so that list could grow." - Hoopmasters.com

05/30/07: "UConn expects to host 6-2 point guard Kemba Walker soon, perhaps the same weekend that Somech (another recruit) visits (June 6-8). Walker, from Rice High in New York, is rated the 20th best point guard in the high school Class of 2008 by rivals.com. UConn sophomore-to-be forward Curtis Kelly played at Rice. Walker recently was named MVP of the Arizona Cactus Classic, leading the New York Gauchos, his AAU team, over Belmont Shore in the championship game. Brandon Jennings, the Oak Hill point guard from Los Angeles who recently chose Arizona over UConn, played for Belmont Shore and was the tournament's leading scorer (28.4)." - Hartford Courant

04/29/07: Saw two games with Walker this weekend at the King James event in Akron. Took it easy one game and let his back court teammate Jordan Theodore show off, but Walker worked the top of the key well in the half court and distributed his bullet-like passes, but would quickly run the break if a long def rebound presented the opportunity - or even if it didn't. - Mike Ryan

04/25/07: Changed his height to 5-11 from 6-0 and moved from a 2 to a 3 Interest. - Mike Ryan

01/15/07: "Kemba Walker has developed into one of the best point guards in the city, with quickness to the basket and solid defense. Yesterday, the Rice junior made a case to be considered one of the best guards in the country.

Walker scored 14 points, had six assists and helped contain one of the best players in the U.S. to lead the Raiders to a 53-51 upset of Simeon Academy, ranked 14th in the country, in the final game of the Super Six at the Garden. "I was very excited," Walker said of the challenge of guarding Derrick Rose. "I heard he is the top player in the country and I wanted a chance to prove myself against him. I think I did."

Rose, consistently ranked among the top five players in the country, was contained - but not stopped. Already considered a lock for the 2008 NBA draft, the Memphis signee scored eight of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Wolverines (11-2) rallied from an eight-point deficit and caught the Raiders before Rice (11-2) held on in an exciting finish." - NY Daily News

01/15/07: "Junior guard Kemba Walker drew the assignment of guarding Rose. "I saw him play once last summer, but the main thing was I couldn't be intimidated," Walker said. "He's a slasher and likes to take it to the basket. I just stuck with it playing hard-nosed (man) defense."

"Kemba's our best defender and wanted the challenge," Rice coach Maurice Hicks said. "No doubt Derrick's a pro. He's the best player we've faced this season." - USAToday.com

12/10/06: "After a strong summer, Walker has become the Raiders' on-court leader. Last night, Walker scored 23 points to lead Rice to a 67-50 win over Jefferson in the Big Apple Basketball PSAL-Catholic League Challenge at Hunter College. "I didn't play a lot last year, but I learned a lot," Walker said. "I learned a lot about leadership and being a leader."
