03/16/06: Midland College men's basketball coach Grant McCasland was sitting in his office this week and pondering what his team would have done in next week's NJCAA National Tournament.

Any other year, Midland College would have cruised to Hutchinson, Kan. This year, however, was different as the No. 11-ranked Chaparrals were in the same conference and region as No. 1-ranked Howard College. The Hawks beat the Chaps four times this year, including an 81-71 decision in the Region V Tournament finals. "Every year there's always going to be some team that you have a challenge beating them," said McCasland, whose team was going for an unprecedented third consecutive trip to the national tournament. "This year was Howard. We hope other years that's the exception."

Take away the thorn in the side that was Howard and Midland had another exceptional year, finishing with a 27-6 record. "I thought we played a really difficult schedule and our guys came together quickly," said McCasland, who has compiled a 53-16 record in two seasons as head coach of the Chaps. "They came together because of our sophomores -- Timmy (Crowell) and Arturas (Valeika)."

There's no doubt that the heart and soul of the team was Crowell, the 6-foot-2 sophomore point guard from Albuquerque, N.M., who started in every game of his Chaparral career and finished with 596 points and 451 assists during that time.

During the regional tournament, Crowell played every minute of every game. In the Region V Tournament finals against Howard, Crowell picked up his fourth foul at the 11:10 mark of the second half and when McCasland thought about taking him out, Crowell told him "I'm not fouling out." Crowell stuck to his word and finished with a team-high 18 points. "Not only was he a good basketball player but he was a coach on the floor," said McCasland about his point guard. "That's the greatest compliment you can give a point guard. He was the extension of what I wanted and a lot of times I didn't even have to tell him what to do on the court."

McCasland admits Crowell will be the biggest challenge to replace next year. Crowell, Valeika, along with sophomore guards Ricky Smith and Rashaad Singleton are all getting looks from Division I schools with Crowell getting the most attention. Purdue, Tennessee, UTEP, Houston and UC-Santa Barbara are just a few of the schools interested in Crowell. - Midland Reporter-Telegram
