09/21/05: Over the summer, Ryan Pettinella was sure he had found a home with the University of Cincinnati basketball team. Then the father of that program was kicked out of the house.
When Cincinnati President Nancy Zimpher forced longtime coach Bob Huggins to resign in August, Pettinella decided to leave as well. "That was the only reason," said Pettinella, a former McQuaid star who had transferred from Penn. "If Coach Huggins had stayed, I would have stayed."
Pettinella, 21, has enrolled at Monroe Community College and is taking four classes. The business major is living with his mother in Pittsford.
He would have sat out this season anyway as a transfer and won't play for MCC. Next spring, he'll be a free agent.
Pettinella says he's a fan of Andy Kennedy, the assistant who has replaced Huggins on an interim basis, but couldn't bank his future on Kennedy.
"I like him a lot, and I'm sure he'll do a good job," said the 6-foot-9 forward, who averaged 4.8 points and 3 rebounds for Penn last year. "But he probably won't be there next year, and there's too much uncertainty as to who the new coach will be."
Pettinella will have two years of eligibility remaining when he returns to basketball next fall. When he left Penn, he considered joining former McQuaid teammate Tyler Relph at St. Bonaventure but ultimately decided on Cincinnati.
Is Bona in the mix now? "That is a possibility," he said. "One of many possibilities." - Rochester Democrat
A Univ of Penn transfer - would have to sit out the 05-06 season per NCAA rule.
