06/06/03: "Tennessee State men’s basketball coach Cy Alexander has announced that post player Rod Flowers is transferring to the Tigers from the University of Cincinnati. Flowers will be eligible for play in the 2004-05 season at TSU in accordance to NCAA regulations.

Flowers, a 6-8, 235-pound athlete from Huntsville, Ala., played three seasons for the Bearcats. He was one of three players who alternated at the center spot this past season. He made four starts and saw the second-most playing time of the trio at the position. "Rod is going to bring maturity, mental, and physical toughness to our interior game,” said Alexander. “I am also very impressed that is going to be able to obtain his college degree in three years.”

Flowers, regarded as a student of the game, made solid strides in his three years at Cincinnati. He made four starts this season, averaging 3.1 points a game. He scored 10 points in a win over in-state rival Dayton and helped spark the team by scoring nine points in a 53-52 late-season win over East Carolina. He also had seven rebounds on two occasions in games against Tennessee Tech and Tulane.

He signed with UC after an outstanding high school career at Butler High School in Huntsville, Ala. Flowers was named Alabama Class 6A Player of the Year following his senior season. He averaged 22.1 points, 14.2 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks a game. Flowers was Metro Huntsville Player of the Year and played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

Flowers will have one season of eligibility remaining with the Tigers. Rod will graduate with a degree in social sciences at Cincinnati in August and will enroll as a graduate student at Tennessee State. - TSU Athletics

7/13: "Rod is enigmatic to me. The world is his, it's just a matter of how he wants to go about grabbing it. In a recent POST write up Rod talked more about playing the 3 than the 4. If it's 3 for Rod, he needs to improve his defense signifigantly. His positioning, defensive stance, and strategy all need to change if he wants to log time for Huggs at the 3. Sadly, these are all things which Rod needs to be coached on to improve, and the real coaching won't come until Fall. If I am Rod, I work on endurance and strength over the summer, something that will help him no matter the spot he plays." - Antonio Mazzaro / Forum

7/11: "I liked Rod Flowers' "catch and finish" game, which is the kind of thing one can look for in a summer league." - Randy Shinkle

7/6: "Rod Flowers will play this year because he has a solid "catch and finish" game, which fits quite nicely with a point guard of KSat's abilities. Defensively, he reacts too slowly and needs a lot of work." - Randy Shinkle

7/3: Head coach Bob Huggins has called 6-8 power forward Rod Flowers, "the best high school rebounder he has seen in the past five years." - Monter Draft News

6/20: "He is raw physically and needs to see the inside of the weight room, but this kid has a tremendous upside. What impressed me most was his positioning in the paint/on the blocks, for a HS kid he knew where to be and when to be there. Good footwork too, made a nice hook shot while spinning away from the basket in the paint." - Shawn Hunter, per Summer League Game

6/20: "- Rod Flowers (#44): Played hard but didn't have many points. Had one real good block. Talked to him after the game and asked him what the biggest difference is between the HS and college game, for him. "The speed, constantly up and down". He looked tired. He said he scored 14 and had 12 bounds in the Mississippi All Star Game. His body looked like Fortson's his freshman year." - Mike Ryan, per Summer League Game

6/18: "everybody got to see a skinny kid, that looks alot like David West of a year ago, put on a display of very poised shots and presence down low...he was not afraid to shoot or bang it with West or Posey...he definitely needs about 20 lbs. to fill out his body right now...he looked more like a wing forward than a power forward...but he does have soft hands, which always bodes well for put backs and short range jumpers...not to mention the stepping out for those threes...lots of excitement ahead for this kid." - Tom Schroeder, per Summer League Game

6/10: "The Alabama boy's basketball team was victorious today over the Mississippi All-Stars in the 10th Annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic played at Holmes Community College. Butler's Rod Flowers went to the boards hard and added 15 points and pulled down ten rebounds. In additioan, Wilcox-Central's Antoine Pettway scored 11 points and had three assists. - Alabama HS site at Rivals.

5/6: "We'll have a report on the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game, which will be played on June 10th at Holmes Community College in Goodman, MS. For the Alabama squad, Mario Austin, Gerald Wallace, Rod Flowers and Asa Woods are just some of the stars scheduled to play". - Mid South Hoops

1/27/00: VERBAL COMMITMENT
11/17/99: "The host Butler Rebels trailed Lee by a point with a little more than three seconds left when they turned to their most experienced players: Chris Pride and Rod Flowers. Pride took a baseline jumper that bounced off the rim. It missed. Flowers tipped in the rebound. Butler won 67-66. 'I knew nine times out of 10 the ball's going to come out (on the opposite side),' said Flowers. 'I knew if you shoot from the left, it's going to come out to the right most of the time. I just grabbed it and tipped it in.' His tip-in led to a wild celebration in the Butler gym as the Rebels opened their season with a win." Huntsville Times
