01/05/05: Casiem Drummond couldn't say he was happy to see his Bloomfield Tech teammates miss shots. But the 6-10 junior was so strong on the offensive boards in the first half yesterday that the rest of his squad seemed to almost draw sighs of relief each time a shot caromed off the rim.
Drummond scored 10 of his 17 first-half points directly off putbacks and finished with 24 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks to send Bloomfield Tech to a 56-42 victory over Science in the Brian Doherty Classic at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark. "That's the best he's played all year. He was active. He took control inside, and we really needed it," Bloomfield Tech coach Nick Mariniello said. "Other than Coz, I thought we were a little tentative in the first half with certain things. We needed to follow his lead."
Bloomfield Tech trailed, 23-22, after the half, but then finally took advantage of Drummond's dominance in the lane. With Science doubling him inside, Bloomfield Tech sought, and found, open jumpers that helped it gradually pull away.
Desean Butler scored eight of his 11 points in the second half and Marquise Moore sank all eight of his points after the break for Bloomfield Tech. "Coach told them to jump on my back, so I could carry them through," Drummond said. "He said I was doing an outstanding job, and now it was time for everyone else to follow me."
"I told the guys that if they cut off screens, the jump shots would be there," Drummond said. "They were doubling on me, so I knew people would be open." - NJ Star Ledger
