Sweet-shooting stroke who can single-handedly put a team on his back. Is rarely taken out of a game or shut down by a single defender. A big time scorer capable of going off at any time." - thanks Jennifer Snyder

04/02/05: "The Virginia All-Stars were led by Cincy signee Tyree Evans, who finished with 29 points, seven assists, and four rebounds for the winning squad. Evans drilled 5-of-11 3-pointers and sparked an offensive attack that shot 53.9% from the field." Evans was named the Virginia team's MVP. - PackPride.com

04/01/05: "Tyree Evans may have trouble breathing before tonight's Commonwealth Classic. No doubt, he'll be anxious. The former George Wythe star has not played in front of Richmond fans since the 2004 Group AAA semifinals.

Eventually, he'll be breathing better than ever as the 2004 Times-Dispatch prep player of the year fought off tonsillitis during his postgraduate season at Winchendon School in north-central Massachusetts. "It is better because I couldn't breathe," said Evans, who missed much of the second half of the season getting his tonsils taken out. "My tonsils were huge." As were his numbers.

Evans' production - he averaged 29 points per game in his senior season at Wythe - was slated to decline as he was surrounded by more talent and more of a team concept. But he rose as usual to score 24 points per contest. He's added better ball-handling and passing (4 assists per game) to his deadly, high-rising jumper. "I put the ball on the floor. I look to pass a lot now," said the Cincinnati signee, who is home for spring break. "I've been running the point a little bit. Looking for some [alley-oops] to throw." - Richmond Times

03/22/05: Evans will play in the Commonwealth Classic high school all-star basketball games April 1 at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center." His teammate will be Andray Blatche - Richmond Times-Dispatch

01/13/05: "My strengths or my biggest strength now is my defense," Evans said. "Three years ago, my defense wasn’t that good, but now I think I have good defense and I can score." - BearcatInsider.com

01/08/05: "Winchendon (Mass.) defeated St. Thomas More, 102-77. Tyree Evans scored 17 for Winchendon (5-3)" - Connecticut Day

12/13/04: Tyree Evans, a 6-2 guard who has signed with Cincinnati, scored 27 points in leading Winchendon (Mass.) to a 86-80 victory over South Kent on Saturday." - InsidersHoops.com

11/25/04: "Tyree Evans 6-2 180 WG Winchendon, MA School This quick and explosive wing struggled from perimeter at times in NJ, but like most shooters kept firing, just ask Philadelphia Lutheran who he went off for 29 points against. He will help Bearcats with ability to score and will be a welcome addition at Cincinnati next fall." - HoopMasters.com

11/22/04: "6-foot-3 Cincinnati signee Tyree Evans bounced back from a lackluster performance on Friday to finish with 29 points, including three buckets from beyond the arc." - RivalsHoops.com

11/14/04: "Coach Mike Byrnes, who claimed his first NEPSAC Class A crown in seven years at Winchendon last season, will rely heavily on the guard tandem of Justin Dentmon and Tyree Evans. "They are probably the most talented two guards I’ve ever had together,” Byrnes said. "We match up very well with any other backcourt in the preps." (snip) Evans (6-2, 180) is a big-time shooter who has signed with Cincinnati. - ScoutHoops.com

11/11/04: "Evans was the player of the year in Virginia last season, averaging 29.5 points, and his 884 points were the third-most in a single season in Virginia High School League History, behind Allen Iverson and Moses Malone. Evans will play this year at the Winchendon School in Worcester, Mass. "I think he's the top prep school wing guard in the nation," (Bob) Gibbons said." - Enquirer.com

09/08/04: ARTICLE FROM DIME MAGAZINE
What's My Name? - Tyree Evans
by Peter Hamby – Dime Magazine

I own this city. I own this state.

Tyree Evans is staking his claim on Richmond, Va. “I’m underrated,” he boasts. “I’m under the radar, man. Nobody understands me. I just scored 884 points in a season. Don’t too many people do that.”

He’s right. The 6’3” guard from George Wythe High School is officially among the best high school players Virginia has ever seen. The only high school players in state history to score more points in a season are Allen Iverson and Moses Malone. Evans graduated in May with 2,251 career points, making him the highest-ranked scorer ever in Virginia Group AAA history, just above current Duke star J.J. Reddick.

“I’m not halfway close to where I want to be,” Evans says. “Now I want to be Dwyane Wade. I want to be better than Wade. My favorite player used to be Ray Allen, but I’m better than him. I can shoot better.”

Better than Ray Allen? At 18? Evans is fond of tossing around big, brash words. Thing is, the people who’ve seen him grow from a streak-shooter to a 30-point scorer think he can back them up.

Though Evans’ talent on the court can’t be questioned, his achievements in the classroom can. That’s the reason Evans will be taking a prep year at Winchendon School in Massachusetts in the fall instead of balling with the best in the Big East or ACC not that he couldn’t take them right now. “He’s got NBA talent,” says his former high school coach, Frank McMillian. “He didn’t sign [with a D-1 school] because he needed to mature in the classroom. He needs to get his grades up, his SATs up. Once that happens, he’s going to be a great college player.”

Despite his classroom performance, Evans still had his fair share of college suitors. Cincinnati, N.C. State, Miami, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama-Birmingham, Penn State, and James Madison all checked in. A few programs were even recruiting Evans for two sports, basketball and football (he runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash and, by his own count, scored 16 touchdowns last season as a wide receiver for the Bulldogs). But basketball remains Evans’ true calling.

His career highlight was hanging 51 points on division rival L.C. Bird, icing seven-straight threes in the first half. He beat Bird again in the division title game, hitting a buzzer-beating jumper with 0.3 left and three defenders draped on him like curtains.

In fact, Bird and Wythe played each other four times last season, and Bird coach Randy Cave found that a box-and-one defense simply wasn’t enough to contain Evans. “You have to guard him from 30 feet in,” Cave says. “He’s got tremendous range. Then in the fourth, he just puts the ball on the floor and gets baskets. You can’t play a box-and-one against him because he's physically very strong and he’s going to get the ball. We ran a triangle-and-two on him, with one guy in front of him and one guy behind him. He’s very difficult to defend.”

Ultimately, even the most absurd junk defenses didn't work on Evans. In the regional tournament final in March, he dropped 24 points to lead his team past Bird one more time. His antics didn’t stop there. In a state semifinal loss to Potomac, he managed only five points in the first half, but somehow finished with 39. Evans ended the year with a 29.5 scoring average and a mantle full of league, city, and state Player-of-the-Year Honors.

“He’s about as fast as anybody I’ve ever seen,” says Arthur Utley, who covers prep ball for the Richmond Times-Dispatch and has watched Evans develop since he came to George Wythe as a freshman in 2000. “He can shoot threes from 27 feet. Any time he got the ball inside 30 feet, you can almost hear the anticipation in the gym. Tyree’s very difficult to stop. Sometimes he's just unconscious.”

A year of polishing and maturity away from Richmond will likely do Evans good, especially at Winchendon, a school that has produced scores of division one players over the last decade, including Georgetown’s Victor Page, Cincinnati’s Donald Little, Louisville’s Francisco Garcia and Charlotte’s Martin Iti.

Once he hits college, who knows? On the spectrum of potential, Evans really could be as talented as Ray Allen, but he could also be as defiant and headstrong as Victor Page. The talent and athleticism are there; it’s the mentality that needs polish. While observers laud his maturity as compared to what it once was, even Evans admits he needs to work better at being a team player.

“Just disciplining myself is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he says. I’ve come a long way. It’s been a struggle, going to school, getting better. That’s why I’m so hungry. I watch guys on TV in the NBA, and to me it looks like they ain’t playing hard enough. Maybe it’s just the TV, but I think I could play with them right now.”

He’ll get a chance to this summer during the Greater Richmond Pro-Am Summer League, when he’ll face off against homegrown Virginia talent like Ben Wallace, Johnny Newman and Jonathan Hargett. “I’ve played against some AAU teams around here and made ‘em look like they were going nowhere,” he says. “I’ll show them I own this city.” - Dime Magazine

08/27/04: "Cincinnati will also take a look at 6-8 P/WF Leo Criswell, the former Kansas City, KS, Piper High School player, who is now at The Winchendon, MA, School. Since, Criswell will be a teammate of Tyree Evans on Coach Mike Byrne's talented Winchendon squad, it is logical that Cincinnati will certainly evaluate him as a potential recruit." - HoopMasters.com

08/25/04: Listed as the 14th best prep player in the country. - HoopScoop

08/20/04: Listed as the 70th best player in his class. - theInsidersHoops.com

07/22/04: Tyree Evans is listed #51 overall and 10th best SG in 2005 class. - PrepStars

06/29/04: "Tyree Evans said he believed it was his time to show his loyalty to the University of Cincinnati and its basketball coach, Bob Huggins. Huggins went to see Evans in Richmond, Va., even after it became apparent the 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard wouldn't qualify academically for the 2004-05 season. Huggins was the only head coach to visit after several other schools including Georgia and Clemson backed off recruiting Evans.

After Huggins' indefinite suspension following a drunk driving arrest, Evans wanted to show his support for his future coach, officially committing to UC on Monday. He is the first member of the 2005 recruiting class. "They were behind me the whole time," Evans said. "He got in trouble, and I'm behind him."

Evans started summer classes at the Winchendon (Mass.) School on Monday. In his first face-to-face meeting with Winchendon basketball coach Mike Byrnes, Evans told him he was headed to UC and to let everyone know. Evans said Alabama called him last week, but he told the Crimson Tide he was coming to UC." - CincyPost.com

06/29/04: "The University of Cincinnati basketball program has received its first recruiting commitment since coach Bob Huggins was indefinitely suspended June 12 after being arrested for driving under the influence. Tyree Evans, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from George Wythe High School in Richmond, Va., has orally committed to UC, beginning with the 2005-06 season. He'll play this season at The Winchendon School, a prep school in Worcester, Mass., that produced former Bearcat center Donald Little.

Evans is expected to sign a national letter-of-intent with UC during the November signing period.

NCAA rules prevent the UC coaching staff from commenting until he signs. "He got on our campus last night at 9:30 to start summer school," Winchendon coach Mike Byrnes said Monday. "He came in my office today at 2 o'clock. He said, 'Coach, I want to let you know you can tell everybody I will be attending the University of Cincinnati.' "

Evans said Huggins' suspension did not affect his decision. "Everybody makes bad decisions," Evans said. "Everybody needs a second chance. That's a Hall of Fame coach. He just made a bad choice."

Franklin McMillian, the coach at George Wythe, said he and Evans talked about Huggins' suspension before Evans made the commitment. "Hopefully, coach Huggins will be back," McMillian said. "He had already spoken with coach Huggins (before the DUI incident). I think his commitment is solid. He wants to play for Cincinnati."

Evans, the Virginia high school player of the year, averaged 29.5 points last season. His 884 points were the third most in a single season in Virginia high school league history, behind Allen Iverson and Moses Malone. His 2,251 career points were the 11th most in VHSL history, but he surpassed Duke's J.J. Redick as the top career point producer in Group AAA, the big-school division.

He also played wide receiver and defensive back on the George Wythe football team. "He's definitely a true two guard," McMillian said. "I would say he needs to work on his ball handling. But he's a prolific scorer. He's extremely quick. He's a strong kid who gets up the floor very well. He has just unlimited range. He has NBA range right now." Evans' season high was 51 points. He scored in the 40s four times and in the 30s nine times.

Clark Francis, who runs the Hoop Scoop recruiting service, ranked Evans at No. 130 in the high school class of 2004. He was No. 66 by PrepStars.com. "He's got a lot of talent," Francis said. "When he gets hot, he's a terrific outside shooter. He can take it to the basket and he's athletic. He probably shoots too well to be a stereotypical UC player, which his good. I think he's a good catch."

Evans, 19, said he chose UC at least partly because of the loyalty that Huggins and recruiting coordinator Andy Kennedy showed him when it became apparent that he was not going to meet the NCAA's academic standards for freshman eligibility. "All the schools that were on me my junior year, a lot of the schools backed off," Evans said. "But Cincinnati was still with me. They were showing a lot of loyalty to me. They showed me a lot of love. Cincinnati was still there trying to help me out." - Enquirer.com

06/28/04: "Evans is a terrific shooter and can score with ease. He has a great dribble drive that creates space on the perimeter and keeps the defenses honest. Teamed with incoming guard Vincent Banks, The Bearcats will have plenty of offense in the backcourt." - RivalsHoops.com

06/28/04: "It looks like the University of Cincinnati basketball program has not missed a beat when it comes to recruiting, because 6'3 Tyree Evans from Richmond (George Wythe) VA, who is ranked #130 nationally in the senior class by the HOOP SCOOP, made a verbal commitment to the Bearcats earlier today.
We're talking about a big time athlete and prolific scorer, as is evident by the fact that Evans is ranked third on the all-time Virginia High School League scoring list behind Allan Iverson and Moses Malone with 2,251 points. Evans is great in transition, but he's also a lights out 3-point shooter, which makes him exactly what the doctor order for the Bearcats." - HoopScoop

06/28/04: "According to a source close to the situation, the Cincinnati Bearcats have added a 2005 shooting guard. Tyree Evans, a 6-foot-2 5th year prep out of Winchendon (Mass.) Winchendon School, committed to the Bearcats on Monday. Evans will not be on the summer (AAU) circuit as he’ll be in school working on his grades." - theInsidershoops.com

05/17/04: Listed as the 66th best player in his class. - PrepStars.com

04/29/04: "Cincinnati sent chief recruiter Andy Kennedy to Virginia to catch up with Evans." - www.theInsidersHoops.com

04/23/04: "George Wythe's Tyree Evans was never better than in his final game, a double-overtime loss to Potomac in the state semifinals. He scored just five points in the first half, but had 34 thereafter. For his scoring prowess and leadership in a year with several worthy candidates, Evans was voted The Associated Press Group AAA player of the year yesterday by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters." - Richmond Times Dispatch

03/23/04: "Junk defenses are part of Tyree Evans' every-game life. "I got double-teamed in football and basketball. It was terrible," Evans said with a shake of his head.

Evans, a 6-3 shooting guard for the George Wythe Bulldogs, saw double teams as a wide receiver in football because of his big-play capabilities, but basketball is the sport where Evans has the most impact and where he sees just about every imaginable defense.

Box-and-one. Triangle-and-two with the two on Evans. Stopping one of the most prolific scorers in Virginia High School League history was out of the question. The most anyone could hope was to contain him.

Yet, Evans scored 884 points in 30 games this season, a 29.5 average because he can shoot effortless jumpers from 27 feet or drive to the basket with amazing quickness. "He can score bunches of points in a matter of minutes," George Wythe coach Franklin McMillian said. "It was the ultimate compliment that teams like L.C. Bird put in those defenses because they thought it was very important to stop him as the key to the game."

The 884 points rank third in the VHSL record book for most in a season behind Allan Iverson and Moses Malone. Evans finished his career with 2,251 points. That's 11th overall on the VHSL career list, but he surpassed J.J. Redick as the all-time Group AAA point producer.

Evans heads the 2003-04 Times-Dispatch All-Metro team as the player of the year. He becomes the sixth player to earn All-Metro first-team honors three years in a row.

As a four-year starter who improved each year, Evans helped the Bulldogs win three Central Region championships and finish as the runner-up the other. "When he was a freshman, he was green. He just wanted to shoot," McMillian said. "This year, his defensive game changed to where he was able to use his quickness to stop people."

Player-of-the-year honors was a goal for Evans. "I was practicing for it, but I knew I would have to work hard to get it," he said. "When I got double-teamed, I just had to relax, take my time and let the game come to me."

His season high was 51 against L.C. Bird. He scored in the 40s four other times and in the 30s nine more times. The low was 12 points when Manchester held the ball in the district tournament. Only five times did he score fewer than 20.

Evans' future beyond high school basketball is up in the air. "I think if he could do it all over again, he would hit the books harder. He's paying the price for not getting it done in the classroom," McMillian said. "The best thing for Tyree is to go to a prep school, get into a program and not come back." - Richmond Times Dispatch

02/26/04: "Tyree Evans, a 6-3 senior from Richmond (VA) Wythe, scored 32 points, include 15 in the fourth quarter in a 62-60 win over Prince George in the quarterfinals of the Central Region basketball tournament. I just want to go to a place where I’ll get to play early.” – www.RivalsHoops.com

11/10/03: "The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Evans is still not sure which sport he will play in college or if he will try to play both. "I am still going to go with the best offer,” he said. 06/08/03: "Richmond (Va.) George Wythe High School receiver/defensive back Tyree Evans lists a Hurricane scholarship offer. But it’s not for football. "They offered me for basketball," said Evans, a 6-foot-3, 177-pounder with 4.4-second speed. 05/18/03: ". . . . told RivalsHoops.com that he has scholarship offers from N.C. State, Cincinnati, James Madison and Miami (FL). Some of those schools are looking at him to play both sports. He is slated to take the SAT for the first time in June, but those in the know in the Richmond area say he might need to detour to prep school or junior college before making the jump to a Division I school." - www.RivalsHoops.com

5/17/03: "6'3 (Guard) from George Wythe HS in Richmond, VA (Team Richmond '04) Good shooters are in short supply in the college game. Good shooters with excellent athleticism and the ability to get to the hole are a hot commodity. Evans is one of those guys. Sweet stroke remiscent of Indiana freshman Bracey Wright. Evans has toiled in obscurity down in Richmond. Look for him to make a big statement on the trail this summer. Evans told us that North Carolina State, Cincinnati, James Madison, Miami, Stanford, and Illinois have been recruiting him the most. He's also an outstanding wide receiver on the gridiron and is considering playing both sports in college. North Carolina is recruiting him for football." – www.HoopMasters.com

5/16/03: "We continue to be impressed and intrigued with his game. This 6-2 guard puts up points in bunches and flurries as well as anyone in his class. He is explosive around the basket, shoots the ball with great confidence and never wavers from his attacking approach. His handle needs some tuning and he can lose concentration at times, but is improving in that area." – www.PrepStars.com
