05/10/05: "University of Cincinnati freshman guard Vincent Banks has decided to leave the Bearcat basketball team for personal reasons, head coach Bob Huggins announced on Tuesday. "This is very unfortunate for Vincent that he has to deal with these personal issues," said Huggins. "It is also disappointing because our athletic director (Bob Goin) and his staff went to great lengths this past year to provide opportunities for Vincent to be a student-athlete here at the University of Cincinnati." The 6-2 Banks was academically ineligible for the 2004-05 season for failing to meet initial eligibility requirements, however, the university worked hard to restore Banks to partial qualifier status. A native of Atlanta, Banks was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Georgia in 2003 after averaging 31.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game at South High School. Banks spent the 2003-04 season at high school power Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep, where he was the leading scorer (23.0) and led that squad to a 29-4 record." - UCBearcats.com
04/29/05: "Vincent Banks, a 6-2, 180 guard from the 2004-05 recruiting class, is on campus achieving academic eligibility. Banks averaged 23 points in 2003-04 at Laurinburg (N.C.) Institute." - UCBearcats.com
02/12/05: "The NCAA granted UC's appeal, changing the status of freshman Vincent Banks to partial qualifier from non-qualifier. Banks is now back on an athletic scholarship and will be eligible at the beginning of next season. Banks is a 6-foot-2 shooting guard and former Mr. Basketball in Georgia at South High School in Atlanta.
While non-qualifiers are usually allowed to practice with the team, Goin said he sacrifice that privilege in a bargain with the NCAA. "I told coach Huggins and Vincent if I had to give up practice to get his scholarship, I would," Goin said. "The important thing is he's got his scholarship. I suggested that (deal) and (associate athletic director) Bruce Ivory and (assistant compliance director) Maggie McKinley worked really hard on it." - Cincinnati Post
01/08/05: It's hard to measure exactly what the loss of Vincent Banks will mean to the University of Cincinnati basketball team, because he has yet to play in a game. But one thing's for sure - the Bearcats would love to have found out how much of an impact Banks might have had. UC announced Friday that Banks, a 6-foot-2 freshman guard from Atlanta and Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep Institute, has been ruled academically ineligible to play this year because he failed to meet the NCAA's initial eligibility requirements.
Banks remains enrolled at UC and, according to athletic director Bob Goin, has indicated he wants to stay at the school. "We're going to do everything we can within the rules to make that happen," Goin said.
Because he has been ruled an academic non-qualifier, Banks is not allowed to practice with the team and is not allowed to go to school on an athletic scholarship, which means he'll have to pay for school himself. "I'm looking at a process to see if there's any merit that we could make an appeal that we could turn it into a partial qualifier," Goin said.
A partial qualifier is allowed to practice with the team and can receive financial aid. Initial eligibility is determined by a sliding scale that includes his core curriculum from high school - or in Banks' case, prep school - and his test scores.
He has not played in a game for the Bearcats. "He's been kept abreast of what's going on," Goin said of Banks. "He definitely knew what was transpiring. It's a process that we had to review and that people outside (the university) had to review. We saw it coming."
While Banks was practicing, both Huggins and associate head coach Andy Kennedy, who recruited Banks after Lima (Ohio) Shawnee guard Jamar Butler reneged on his oral commitment to UC and signed with Ohio State, were impressed with his toughness and his ability to score. "He's got more Steve Logan qualities than any player I've been here with," Kennedy said a week into practice, "meaning that he's very crafty. He knows how to score. He's got a real toughness to his game."
Banks was named Mr. Basketball in Georgia while playing at South Atlanta High School in 2002-03, averaging 31.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
He originally committed to Miami (Fla.) but had to attend prep school when he failed to get the test scores he needed to be eligible as a freshman. Last season at Laurinburg, he averaged 23.0 points and 5.0 assists.
If Banks stays at UC, he can work toward becoming eligible to play next year - with three years of eligibility remaining. Or he could transfer to a junior college to work toward an associate's degree.
If he transfers, he can reopen the recruiting process and sign with another school because his letter-of-intent is no longer binding. - Enquirer.com

Spring 2004: "I like Vincent a lot as a talent, but I am not sure how good of a teammate he is. He's out there to do one thing, get his and then get some more. He can be an absolutely electric scorer when he gets on a roll and he is pretty quick. He's a little smallish for a WG (6-1, maybe 6-2) but he plays that Ben Gordon kind of me first style. If he plays with his team and takes his shots as they come within the offense, he should make a big impact by his soph year. I could just as easily see him struggling though. . . . I think Banks is a straight two." - Eric Bossi - Inside Carolina

11/22/03: "He isn't a point guard, but off the ball Vincent Banks is a primetime scorer. The future Cincinnati Bearcat, prepping this year at Laurinburg, is a classic shot manufacturer off the dribble. He uses his quickness and a slick crossover to shake his man, then either pulls right there or takes a couple of dribbles and jump stops for short-range hoops. Banks isn't a pure shooter and may run into trouble at times because he stands just 6-3, but in the college game -- and at Cincy, where wings his size have had great success in the past -- he should be OK. He led all scorers in his game on opening, scoring 18 points on 6-11 shooting." – www.PrepStars.com
11/22/03: "...Laurinburg's big gun was Cincinnati signee 6-4 Vincent Banks who had 18 points hitting jumpers for all over the floor inside the arc! Banks was as good as anyone we observed on the first night and has that toughness that Bearcat fans will love." – www.HoopMasters.com

Hoop Scoop rates him No. 21 in the nation among fifth-year high school players. Banks, who is attending Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina after being named Georgia's player of the year while at South Atlanta High School in 2002-03, verbally committed to UC in August. 10/08/03: "Vincent Banks, the former Mr. Georgia basketball, is a tremendous scorer and he didn’t deviate from that at all. When he’s open, he’ll knock down the long ball. Banks did look comfortable though when he ran the point, too. At 6-foot-2, he can play both spots but is probably better suited as a shooting guard. The future is bright for Banks and he could become an all conference player when he’s at Cincinnati." – www.RivalsHoops.com (notes from recent tourney)

But now it appears that he has changed his mind and, instead, will attend Laurinburg (Institute) NC, which is expected to be a absolutely loaded this winter, as is evident by the fact that Laurinburg head coach Chris Chaney will go to war this winter with a team that includes Anderson, 6'10 Jackie Butler from McComb (H.S.) MS, 6'11 Longar Longar from Rochester (John Marshall) MN, 6'3 Vincent Banks from Atlanta (South Atlanta) GA, 6'8 Richard Dorsey from Durham (Mt. 08/07/03: "The last person Vincent Banks expected to hear from Tuesday night was University of Cincinnati basketball coach Bob Huggins. So when he heard that it was Huggins on the line, Banks said, "My eyes got real big, but he doesn't know that."
It took Banks, last year's Mr. Basketball in Georgia, all of a few seconds to accept Huggins' offer of a scholarship. He's expected to sign a letter of intent with UC in November. "I know I'm under a good coach and I like their style of play," Banks said.
Huggins called Banks shortly after he had a phone conversation with Jamar Butler, the Lima Shawnee High School point guard who committed to UC in February 2002 near the end of his sophomore year. When Butler told Huggins he was no longer sure he wanted to attend UC, Huggins turned to Banks.
Banks, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard from South Atlanta High School, averaged 31.4 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals last season for coach Michael Reddick. South Atlanta was 57-5 during the last two years. Banks scored 58 points in one game and finished his South Atlanta career with 2,300 points. He was moved to small forward last season after playing his first three years at point guard and shooting guard. "He can do it all," Reddick said. "He has the jump shot, he can post up and he can shoot from deep range. Even last year when he played small forward, if the pressure got really tough, he'd bring the ball down court. From his freshman and sophomore years, you saw it coming, but his junior year he really blossomed. If he continues his improvement, I wouldn't be surprised if he's only there for a year or two." Recruiting analyst Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop rated Banks 70th nationally last year. Asked if Banks was an upgrade over Butler, Francis said, "It's a wash."
Banks originally committed to Miami (Fla.) but did not have the test scores he needed to play as a freshman. He'll attend Laurinburg Institute, a prep school, in North Carolina. "It's going to help him in a lot of ways," said Laurinburg coach Chris Chaney, "with his test scores and hopefully basketball-wise, too. He'll be playing with great players every day. Our situation is a lot like the college situation, being away from home for the first time. When he gets to Cincinnati, he's already been through the tough practices, being away from home, the study halls." Laurinburg is the same school that produced Asrangue Souleymane, who will be a freshman at UC this year, and Boubacar Coly, who will be a freshman at Xavier.
Banks said he was interested in UC because of Huggins: "I just like the way he forces his guards to play hard." He said he knows all about Huggins' reputation for pushing his players hard in practice. "I need that," he said, "because that will get me going."
Said Reddick: "He loves the way they play. Cincinnati is a team that gets up and down the court. They get after it. If you can shoot and score, Coach will let you shoot and score."
Banks brings with him a reputation as an intense competitor. "He's not afraid to play against anybody," Reddick said. "He's going to practice hard and play hard. He's a special player. He needs to get stronger and continue to improve his passing game. Defensively, he's a good player. ... I've seen him stop some of the best."
Laurinburg's Chaney is already looking forward to having Banks on his team this season. "I guess you could call him a gamer," Chaney said. "He's a guy who plays with an aggressive style. He can score in a variety of ways. He's the type of kid who just doesn't like to lose. He'll fit in great with Cincinnati." - Enquirer.com
08/06/03: "I'm just excited," said the 6-2 Banks, a one-time commit to Miami (Fla.). "I couldn't believe they offered and that everything was done so quickly. I just felt like Bob Huggins -- and don't get me wrong, Perry Clark is a good coach," he added. "But I just like the way Bob Huggins coaches. It didn't take me long to decide after they offered me a scholarship." – www.PrepStars.com
08/06/03: "Vincent Banks, who was named Mr. Basketball in Georgia last season, told The Post that he has orally committed to play for the Bearcats and will sign this fall to be a part of the 2004 recruiting class. Banks, a 6-foot-3 point/shooting guard out of South Atlanta High School, will take the scholarship that UC originally had designated for Lima Shawnee standout point guard Jamar Butler, who as a sophomore in February 2002 gave UC an oral commitment. "I knew I was onto a good coach," Banks said of UC head coach Bob Huggins, the player's primary reason for choosing UC. "I like Coach Huggs. He gets the best out of his players. I see he's kind of hard on his guys, and I like that. It makes me play harder." Banks, who originally orally committed to play at Miami (Fla.), will play at Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina this coming season. Banks, whom Hoop Scoop ranked the 70th-best prospect nationally in the 2003 class, said he needs to spend a year at Laurinburg to focus on improving his college entrance exam scores.
Laurinburg Institute is one of the top prep schools in the nation, producing several Division I prospects, including incoming UC and Xavier freshmen Asrangue Souleymane and Boubacar Coly, respectively. Playing with -- and against -- some of the nation's top prep talent should only help Banks improve upon his already well-rounded game.
Banks, ranked a fifth-team All-American by recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons, spent his first three seasons at South Atlanta as a point guard before switching to the swing position last season. The switch allowed for Banks to exploit defenses in both the frontcourt and backcourt. "He's the most complete player that I've ever seen at his age," said South Atlanta head coach Michael Reddick, who also praises Banks for his unselfish play. "He has an inside move. He has incredible range on threes. Offensively, he's magnificent."
UC will look to use Banks as a "lead" guard -- a player who can score from both the point and the wing. "Their style of play, that fits me perfect," Banks said of UC." - CincyPost.com
08/06/03: "According to our sources, Butler and the UC coaching staff spoke Tuesday night and the guard made it clear that he would like to visit Ohio State and Clemson, in addition to Cincinnati. At that point, things took a dramatic turn. The Bearcats, not wanting to wait around for Butler, offered a scholarship to last year’s Mr. Basketball in Georgia, Vincent Banks. Yes, the same Vincent Banks that was at one time ticketed for Miami, but did not qualify and will spend this season at Laurinburg Prep." - Insiders Hoops

07/26/03: "6-3 guard Vince Banks of Atlanta (GA) South Atlanta committed to Miami of Florida, but will use the additional year to work on his game and grades. He is looking hard at Cincinnati. Banks averaged 29 points per game as a senior." - CollegeBasketballNews.com

07/06/03: "Miami would have had the C-J's fourth-rated class with Vincent Banks, Georgia's High School Player of the Year, but he has yet to sign amid reports that he has yet to achieve a qualifying score." - Louisville C-J
06/15/03: My parents, Anna Banks and Roulette McNeal, have had the most inspiration in my life. They have been pushing me to do the right things in school and life. They always believed in me.
It was my dad who taught me the game of basketball. He believed that I had the skills to play, and he would always tell me that if I kept myself grounded and did my schoolwork that I could go far.
My mom says the same thing. She didn't teach me basketball, but she taught me how to be responsible. She stays on me because she wants me to do the right things in life.
My mother wants me to go after my dreams. She is always encouraging me to work hard at school. My dad handled the basketball side.
People always tell me that my dad was such a great basketball player in high school. Everybody says that he was better than me. I don't think I would have been able to play as well without him helping me.
I admire my parents because they have been there for me. If I needed anything, I always knew that I could count on them. I'm real close to my mom. We have a real good relationship. I want to make her proud of me.
If I succeed, it will be because of her. She helped me by being strict with me. Although I am the youngest, she tells me that if I want something, I have to earn it. She doesn't give me everything. That has helped me to work hard and want to succeed.
She always came to all my games, and that means a lot to me. I know she is with me all the way. - Vincent Banks and the Atlanta Journal Constitution

- Finished four-year career with 2,300 points.
- Had a career-high 58 points this season against Therrell.
- Led team to the 2003 state finals and a 57-5 record in last two seasons.
04/11/03: Named Mr Basketball in Georgia by the Atlanta Tip Off Club over Jermario Davidson, Dwight Howard and Major Wingate.
03/21/03: "Walking through a freshmen P.E. class four years ago, South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick saw a skinny youngster with some amazing basketball skills. Reddick paused for a moment to watch and then headed quickly to his office to tell an assistant coach.
Four years later, that discovery -- Vincent Banks -- turned out to be the best player in the state this season. "He had some great skills to be so young," Reddick said. "When I told the guys on the varsity that a freshmen would be joining the team, they just laughed."
Now, nobody is laughing at Banks, who finished the season with 1,006 points for a 31.4 scoring average while collecting seven rebounds, five assists and four steals a game. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound point guard/shooting guard was a key reason the Hornets compiled a 30-2 record and reached the Class AAAA finals. "I wasn't satisfied because I wanted that [state championship] ring," Banks said. "I just wish I had one more year to come back and give it another shot. All the personal stuff is not why I'm in it. I wanted to bring a state championship home for the recognition of my school."
Over the past two years, Banks has put South Atlanta back on the basketball map. With him leading the way, the Hornets have compiled a 57-5 record and won back-to-back Region 5-AAAA championships. While he has scored 2,300 career points, Banks is still considered an unselfish player.
This season, Reddick approached him about moving to small forward to add more quickness to the team. Without hesitation, Banks, who has committed to the University of Miami, made the move. "He is a natural combo guard," Reddick said. "Vincent is the type of player that puts the team first. He had no problem moving to forward. He is a very humble kid. He has done all that we have asked him to do. If he was selfish, he could have averaged over 40 points."
Banks learned to play the game while following his father, Roulette McNeal, around the Atlanta area playgrounds. As McNeal would play pickup games, a 6-year-old Banks would go to the other end of the court and shoot underhand shots. "One day, my dad came while I was shooting and showed me the right way to do it," Banks said. "We used to go to the East Point gym and I would just shoot."
Said McNeal: "I used to make him play against the older kids so he could learn the game." And it seems to have paid off for Banks. In attempt to slow him down, Banks has faced numerous junk defenses, including the box-and-one and triangle-and-two. He made Therrell pay for its decision to play only man-to-man and a straight zone defense, scoring a career-high 58 points." - Atlanta J-C
02/19/03: "Of the players who have a legitimate gripe about not making the (McDonalds All American) list, one strong candidate is 6-2 WG/PG Vincent Banks from South Atlanta High. Banks is having a fantastic season and has improved his stock heading into the spring." - PrepStars.com

06/20/02: "Banks didn’t really get too many opportunities to be the top dog on his team, but when the team did call on him, he delivered. Banks’ number one skill is his shooting ability. He’s a very fluid shooter with a quick release. He showed that he’s capable of shooting equally well off the dribble, or in catch-and-shoot mode. His best game was probably in the semifinals against the Texas Top Prospects when he nailed a couple absolute daggers from about 22 feet on lightning-quick pull-ups off the dribble. He’s also a solid athlete with good ball handling skills." - GatorHoops

Banks, averaging 27 points a game, was a scoring machine with a personal high 48 points in the hard-fought victory." - Student Sports
