He was among the leading scorers in his conference as a freshman. Coaches who have seen him play say he is a talent and a very good defender. He was ranked the 2nd best JUCO SF by Sporting News and the 6th best JUCO shooting guard by Future Stars. He took an official visit to USC September 8th. Oct 2001: "He had signed with the Trojans as a senior at Garfield but did not meet NCAA academic requirements and entered Southeastern (Iowa) CC last Fall As a freshman Smiley averaged 13.8ppg, hitting 60 of 140 treys for 43% from beyond the arc. He hauled down 4.5 rebounds, dished out 2.8 assists and had 1.9 steals per contest. The Blackhawks, who won the NJCAA National Championship in 2000, were 25-8. Smiley is rated as the number-2 JUCO small forward by The Sporting News, the number-5 shooting guard by Lindy’s and the number-6 shooting guard by Future Stars. He reportedly took an official visit to USC last month but will most likely wait until spring before he makes a decision where to continue his college career.
