Bryan Hopkins

Class of 2002
Position: PG
School: Lincoln HS
City: Dallas, TX, TX
Height: 5-11
Interest: 1

8/20: "visited SMU on Saturday and is on campus at Texas today. He told us that his final 5 are Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Texas, SMU, and Arkansas. Hopkins is an explosive athlete with unbelievable leaping ability. He seemed to hit his stride in late July playing for Team Texas in Orlando, FL. Last season he averaged 20 points and 5.8 assists per game. He's got a qualifying score on the SAT and said that he wants to major in Mechanical Engineering. He will make a fall decision." - AllStar Report

8/13: (Hopkins) said Cincy is out on the Greg Swain show tonight. (4 to 1)

8/13: "we don't think (Chadd Moore's) commitment will effect the recruitment of 6'1 Bryan Hopkins from Dallas (Lincoln) TX, who led Team Texas to the championship in both the NIKE Peach Jam and the AAU Super Showcase in July and, as a result, is the leading candidate to be named the Most Improved Player-of-the-Summer later this month by the HOOP SCOOP. If you will recall, the University of Texas appears to be the heavy favorite for Hopkins, but Cincinnati is well connected with the Team Texas AAU program. Remember, the Bearcats landed former Team Texas star 6'7 Jason Maxiell from Carrollton (Newman Smith) TX last fall. Also former Cincinnati All-American Kenyon Martin is from Dallas and, as a result, the Bearcats have a strong following in the Dallas area. In addition to the Longhorns and the Bearcats, Hopkins, who is ranked #8 nationally, as well as the #3 point guard in the class behind 6'1 Raymond Felton from Latta (H.S.) SC and 6'2 Anthony Roberson from Saginaw (H.S.) MI, also is still considering Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and SMU." - HoopScoop

8/6: Bryan mentioned that he would be taking official visits soon and will be picking between CINCINNATI, Miss St, GA Tech, Texas (and one other). - the Greg Swaim radio show

8/6: "The stars for Team Texas were 6-3 WG Bracey Wright of The Colony (Texas) High and 5-11 PG Bryan Hopkins of Dallas Lincoln. Wright is one of the nation's top dozen rising seniors, while Hopkins ranks among the top 35." - Brick O., CNN SI

8/6: Listed as the 7th best PG in his class. (SDockery -6th; JJack -10th) - Blue Chip Hoops

8/5: "Bryan Hopkins from Dallas (Lincoln) TX (is) being ranked among our top 10 nationally. However, we think he's earned it after leading Team Texas to the championship in both the NIKE Peach Jam and the AAU Super Showcase." - HoopScoop

8/5: "With all the gifted point guards in the prep senior class, it didn't seem there was room for one more elite prospect. But 5-11 Bryan Hopkins of Lincoln High in Dallas is advancing from athletic novelty -- how many sub-six-footers dunk alley-oops? -- to skilled playmaker. Texas is interested in pairing him with incoming freshman T.J. Ford, and Purdue and Iowa State also like Hopkins. He tells coaches he is wide open to recruiting interest from others." - DeCourcy, Sporting News

8/4: "CINCINNATI is recruiting him hard as well as Chadd Moore, and is pushing for a fall commitment from one or both of them. SMU is also pushing very hard for Hopkins, and we hear that Texas, TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Baylor are others who have Hopkins high on their lists." - Bullseye, AllStar Report

8/4: "Moore likes Cincy, and they are putting the full court press on Hopkins, who I think is terrific. Moore and Hopkins could play together without question." - Bret B from KSR

7/31: "Listed as the 49th best player in his class. - School Sports

7/29: "PG Bryan Hopkins continually got into the lane off a dazzling variety of creative crossover moves and found his teammates for open looks. When Hopkins wasn't cut off, he was using his superior athleticism to finish strong at the hoop." - PrepStars

7/29: "There really isn't much more we can say about how impressive Hopkins was in Orlando. He created for both himself and his teammates and was basically unguardable. Most impressive was the fact that he played under more control than we have ever seen him. Tends to rely too much on his instincts and athleticism, but that isn't always a bad thing. Should he continue to play at this level, he is very deserving of McDonald's All-American game consideration. He lists Arkansas, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Texas, Oklahoma State and CINCINNATI." - PrepStars

7/28: "Sooner or later Team Texas PG Bryan Hopkins was due to have an "off" game. The question was, when would it happen? Against All Ohio Red, Hopkins appeared to be having that "off" game at a very bad time. Led by rising junior PG Andrew Lavender, a diminutive ball handling wizard, Ohio swarmed and trapped Hopkins at every opportunity. By halftime, Lavender's 16 first half points had given Ohio a 42-33 lead that would have been even larger if not for some clutch shooting performances by Texas WG/WF Shelton Johnson and PG Ross Deragotis. The second half appeared to be more of the same, as Lavender continued to do the impossible and out-quick and out play Hopkins. Lavender also received some help from WG Ron Lewis, who scored from inside and out and did a decent job of holding Team Texas' super WG Bracey Wright somewhat in check. Ohio would build a lead of twelve points before Texas would storm back to close within seven or eight points, then once again regain their momentum. With each failed comeback attempt, a little more wind came out of the Team Texas sails. With just under 2:30 to go, Ohio led by twelve and looked like they had sprung an upset over the favored Texans. Unfortunately for Ohio, it was then that Hopkins turned his game back "on" and turned in one of the most impressive performances in recent history. Hopkins, who had been held to four points through three quarters, exploded in epic Ray Feltonesque fashion. He started scoring every time he touched the ball, using long threes and hanging drives to the basket to as his primary weapons. Still, with under ten seconds to go, Ohio clung to an 80-77 lead. After an Ohio player missed the front end of a one on one, Texas was left with one last chance: Hopkins looked to be trapped a few feet behind the three-point line when he pump faked and sent two Ohio defenders flying, then stepped through to hit a leaning three that found the bottom of the net just as time expired, sending the crowd into a frenzy and the game into overtime. In overtime, Texas was just too much as they pulled ahead and cruised in for a 99-84 win. All told, Hopkins scored 20 points in the final quarter and finished the game with 32 points." - PrepStars

7/27: "Bryan Hopkins from Dallas (Lincoln) TX has emerged as the leading scorer in the tournament averaging 29.7 ppg and 6'3 Bracy Wright from The Colony (H.S.) TX is the third leading scorer in the tournament averaging 26.8 ppg. In other words, Team Texas' guards are averaging over 55 ppg and really that doesn't begin to tell the story of how dominant they've been, as they easily have been the two best players in the tournament from start to finish." - HoopScoop

7/01: "Once listed among or ahead of the elite PG’s in his class Hopkins was our #2 ranked PG is a Sophomore. He has been up and down over the last year but after a great Peach Jam, and an impressive Super Showcase performance, (he was simply amazing all week long), Hopkins seems ready to regain his status as an elite PG. Bryan consistently hit the deep jumper to keep people honest, but it was his ability to score off the dribble and go strong to the hoop that made him special. His unreal athletic ability (40 inch verticle) and extreme quickness make him great one-on-one player. Now he is making better decisions with the ball and his stock is on the rise." - PrepSpotlight

7/25: "If you recall, a year ago at this time 6'1 Bryan Hopkins from Dallas (Lincoln) TX was a major disappointment, as he'd been slowed injuries and was often wild and out of control. Well, now he's healthy, he doesn't have to compete with anybody else for playing time at the point guard spot, and he's learned to make better decisions, like getting 6'3 Bracy Wright from The Colony HS (TX) the ball. And he was doing that pretty frequently at the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, FL this morning, as Wright hit eight 3-pointers and scored 33 points against the Georgia Stars. That also opened things up from Hopkins, who scored most of his 31 points going to the hole. As a matter of fact, Hopkins, who had an electrifying dunk and a incredible block, both of which brought the house down, registered two of the most exciting plays of the entire day in that morning game.....it was Hopkins who stole the show with 27 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. As a result, Hopkins is finally living up to the reputation that he established for himself at Spiece near the end of his freshman year. If you recall, Hopkins was being mentioned as the #1 player in his class after he led Team Texas to the championship of the 15-Under Division of that tournament." - HoopScoop

7/25: "we know that the Longhorns have always been the favorite school of 6'1 Bryan Hopkins from Dallas (Lincoln) TX, who, along with Wright, was the best player we saw the first day at the AAU Super Showcase. But Hopkins says he's still open, as Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Okahoma State, Maryland, and CINCINNATI are all still on his list. Speaking of Cincinnati, Bearcats head coach Bobby HUGGINS was seen watching Hopkins both times he played today in the AAU Super Showcase and, if he can get Hopkins to commit first, he would probably have to pass on 6'2 Chadd Moore from Huntsville (Lee) AL, who recently has emerged as Cincinnati's #1 target at point guard." - HoopScoop

7/19: Listed as the 47th best player in his class. - PrepStars

7/17: "Getting back to Team Texas' impressive 57-55 victory in the championship at the NIKE Peach Jam, the other big hero was 5'11 Bryan Hopkins from Dallas (Lincoln) TX, who played great defense, run the show and dished the ball, and shot the heck out of it. As a matter of fact, he hit six 3-pointers in one game. As a result, his list, which currently has Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU, and Texas being mentioned as the leader, promises to get longer before it gets shorter." - HoopScoop

6/19: "This sub-six-footer is bursting with athleticism. I mean the kind of athleticism that allows him to catch alley-oops with regularity. He likes to play at an extremely fast pace. Like many of the point guards in camp, he struggled with his deep jumper but did have one super game from downtown, making 3-of-5 shots. He’s really a score first kind of guard. All of his mistakes are that of aggression. One area he might want to work on is dribbling. He’s not very tall but likes to dribble the ball almost to shoulder length and against good defensive guards that will be a problem down the road." - BlueChip Hoops

6/19: "The little man, Bryan Hopkins (5-11 PG from Dallas Lincoln), was easily the best leaper at there." - Coach Durand Walker from The Family AAU at the USA Youth Development Festival

6/18: Listed as the 46th best player in his class. - BlueChip Hoops

5/30: Listed as the 4th best player in his class, in the state of Texas. - Texas Hoops

4/30/01: "one of the best performances we saw all weekend in the 17-Under Division was turned by 5'11 Jr Bryan Hopkins from Dallas (Lincoln) TX, who was unstoppable going to the hole, very unselfish, and good defensively." - HoopScoop

4/11/01: Listed as the 21st best PG in the country, rgardless of class. - Brick O., CNN SI

2/20/01: The lowdown: The point guard scored 29 points against Cedar Hill in December during the Dr Pepper Tournament. He's only 5-10 but can score at will with crossover dribbles that freeze defenders. He can dunk without a running start, so he's often on the receiving end of alley-oop passes. He averages 18.2 points and 5.7 assists. What they're saying: "Bryan could probably touch the moon if he tried," Cedar Hill guard Daniel Horton said. "When you go to a Lincoln game, you know he's going to dunk the ball two or three times." - Texas Hoops

1999: Bryan Hopkins who was first recognized at the Spiece AAU tournament this spring, was a little out of his element this week. Hopkins, a 5'10 sophomore to be, may eventually be one of the top guards in his class, but this week he had to mainly concentrate on dictating tempo and distributing the ball to his talented teammates. Don't get me wrong, Hopkins is a talented kid who has the quickness to get into the lane and seems to be developing strength that will allow him to absorb contact at the basket. Hopkins didn't however show me much of a perimeter jump shot at this point. He has the footspeed to defend anyone very closely from end-to-end and will be a solid defensive player. Hopkins will probably develop into a major college find, but for now his game isn't refined enough for that level. - Nike All America Camp Notes, Sports Midwest.

1999: named Soph bracket MVP at the Spiece Slam and Jam over other players like Tyler Best and Bracey Wright.
