10/8/01: The official roster for UC basketball does not include Alonzo Evans. It is not clear why he decided to leave the team or why UC did not place him on the roster. - Mike Ryan
6/21: "Alonzo Evans is a solid player who in our opinion will eventually win a scholarship with hard work and the right attitude." - Bullseye, AllStar Report
6/21: "he was 3rd team Courier-Journal and Lexington Herald all state
as both a junior (when he averaged 25.5/game) and a senior at Western High School in Louisville. He played with a Kentucky AAU team that featured Brandon Bender (just committed to UofL); and appeared at the prestigious ABCD camp with K-Sat. While he played at Division 2 JUCO level, he was all everything at Mott." - Richard Kandell, Forum Contributor
6/21: "Alonzo Evans, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Mott Community College in Flint, Mich., said he is walking on to the University of Cincinnati basketball team. And he is not expected to be one of those seldom-seen non-scholarship players. He's a big-time athlete who no doubt can contribute at that level, Mott coach Steve Schmidt said. I think he's a pretty good fit for that system and style of play. One area that probably needs to improve is his perimeter shooting. But he can score. Evans is enrolled in summer school at UC. He averaged 20.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 4.1 steals for Mott, which lost in the Division II junior-college national championship game. Mott won 61 of 70 games in Evans' two years. If he keeps working and progressing, it could be a steal (for UC), Schmidt said. I would guess he's as good an athlete as they have in their program, and that's quite a statement. Evans, a Louisville native, said he visited West Virginia and also was recruited by Iowa State and Wisconsin. Schmidt said Evans recently had scholarship offers from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Florida A&M. This is my dream school, Evans said of UC. I like their style of play, and Bob Huggins is a great coach. Two other players are expected to walk on in the fall." - Enquirer.com
6/19: Alonzo played at Oak Hills HS in the Cincinnati Summer League.
6/6: "I continue to pick up interesting items that could effect our rankings of the Top 130 Recruiting Classes. It appears that 6'3 Alonzo Evans from Mott (JC) IL has been telling people that he plans to walk-on at Cincinnati. But as of yet we have not confirmed that with anybody at Cincinnati." - Hoop Scoop
6/6: (changed from 3 to 5)
6/3: "With the Bearcats likely to enter the season with only 12 scholarship players, there will be room for walk-ons to contribute like Rodney Crawford did last season. As for who that might be, we won't know until preseason practice begins. We have no information on Alonzo Evans." - Tom Hathaway, UC SID
6/1/01: "The former Western H.S. and Motts CC college star is going to walk-on at Cincinnati because of the 5/8 rule. He averaged 22ppg 8rpg 5apg and 4spg leading Motts to the Div 11 NJCAA title game. He turned down offers to Creighton, West Virgina, Murray State and Detroit University to Walk-on at UC." - post-er "NickB" at Cardinal Sports
Its alot harder to find info on Div 2 Juco guys, than it is Div 1 . . . Mike Ryan
4/28: "Evans is a bigger (6-3, 200) guy who has a combo game. He's been described to me by someone who has seen him play as a guy who likes to slash to the hoop and use his size and strength to finish or dish. He has put up good outside shooting numbers, but against DII JC competition. Word is he is more of a slasher/scorer than a shooter. Also has a pretty good handle for a bigger guard. Iowa State has him on their final list now that Hatten is going to STJ's. Taron Barker also has Cinci on his list I hear now because of Satterfield. It may come down to these two choosing between UC and Iowa State. ISU is also on Andre Stanley from Globe Tech." - unknown post-er on Juco Junction
Named 1st team, All State, All Eastern Conference in 00-01.
3/20: Finished the season 2nd in the league in scoring (20.9 ppg), 7th in rebounding (8.6), 5th in assists (5.1) and 1st in steals (4.1). He shot 56% from the floor and 73% FT.
3/10: Mott Juco won the league championship. Evans was 9-18 from the floor, 3-4 from trey line. 27 pts and 8 reb's. Evans was named touney MVP. There were 17 teams in the tourney.
2/20/01: "Alonzo Evans, a 6-3, 202 pound combo guard from Mott C.C. in Flint, Mich., has led the Bears to an outstanding season thus far in 2000-2001. Mott Head Coach Steve Schmidt informed JUCO Junction that West Virginia, Texas Christian, Kent State, Creighton, Indiana State, SW Missouri State, Toledo, Bowling Green, Wisconsin and Iowa State have shown interest in Evans this winter." - Juco Junction
