  • Tuberville on Cost of Attendance

@schadjoe at ESPN just tweeted that Tuberville is investigating the same thing that VT is looking into, which is fining players COA money for poor behavior as a form of discipline.

Joe SchadVerified account ‏@schadjoe Cincinnati’s Tommy Tuberville said he will consider withholding some cost of attendance money for off the field shortcomings/violations.

Bud Foster at VT kind of stirred up things yesterday by mentioning that there were going to try this. A couple of sportswriters have noted that The NCAA is trying to move away from treating the players as employees for legal reasons and that this move by VT stands in contrast to that.

Wanted to point out that we are are among the nations leaders in COA money if you were unaware. Not just G5, but all schools in FBS. Someone one in response to Schad's tweet stated that they would use this stance against us in recruiting. I think my answer would be to point out that being one of the leaders nationally in COA, you'd still be getting more COA money than most schools even after a potential penalty was enforced.

I don't think so either. I personally don't think a fine schedule thing would happen because it's subject to legal challenges but yes, this has absolutely spiraled out of control on Tuberville and Bohn. Suggest you take a look at Joe Schad's twitter feed in regards to what Bohn said after Tuberville's quote came out.

IMO I don't think the idea itself is bad but any implementation would bring up all kinds of athletes vs. regular students equality issues and contract law headaches. In short it wasn't worth all the press attention that it caused.
