Not sure if this played into it, but McGhee was already a sophomore, not a freshman. He lost his first year to Prop. 48. So he was able to play one year at Juco for free, in the sense that it didn't cost him any D-I eligibilty. Land would have lost a year.

While the door was not closed when Aaron McGhee left, I think it is very,

I've always thought that the wrong decision was to run off McGhee and not
Eugene Land. Without 20/20 hindsight, I thought they had similar size and
games, but McGhee was able to get more playing time as a freshman than Land
did. Further, he seemed to have a deeper intensity when he played than
Land. I really liked McGhee as a player and thought he would develop well
as a player. With 20/20 hindsight, given Land's career vs. McGhee, it is
clear which one should have been kept.
I asked Mike DeCoursy about this decision. He said that the Huggins kept
Land because he was a local player. DeCoursy felt that if he ran of Land,
it would set back his relationships with area coaches, supporters, and
players.
