Getting McClain this year and Yancy Gates next year will be major tests of Mick Cronin's ability as a recruiter. UC will not return to prominence in college basketball until it gets top caliber inside players. McClain will test his ability to recruit against another top Big East school and Gates will test his ability to get top local talent.

Subject: Re: [UC Basketball] Any word on McClain?
UC needs post players with size and length. He will help the defense - being 6'11" behind the guards and wings to disrupt drives to the basket if the guards and wings get beat or blocking shots taken in the lane. He will help with rebounding - if he does not himself rebound, he can box out opponents without being jumped over; at that height he should be able to get some offensive rebounds via tip-ins or put-backs. He will help with depth - whether coming off the bench to spell Adam H. or starting, it is much better to have two centers on the roster than one; plus, it's five more fouls at that position in the event of a tightly officiated game. I have not seen McClain play, but we need height and length to compete inthe Big East, which he has. Try as you like, you cannot teach those traits to a player.

player so special and perhaps so critical for UC to land?
