Having worked for a professional sports team (ok it
was the Detroit Tigers in the mid-90's, so
"professional" may be a stretch) and having seen first
hand what people will do to try to get autographs I
will never criticize someone for brushing someone off
(kid or otherwise) for asking for an autograph. I
have tons of respect for the guys that put up with all
the crap and are still willing to give autographs to
kids that just walk up to them and ask, but after some
of the crap I've seen I don't fault any celebrity from
acting like an "a-hole" to fans.

Bob Feller acts essentially the same way Oscar does,
but the perception of him seems much different than
Oscar's.

I'd also point out that either perception is reality
or it isn't. I think alot of people on this board (on
both sides of the argument) want to have it both ways.
In general, perception is reality for people so long
as that perception agrees with what they already
think.

Like it or not, that is his perception. I'm sure he
has had some
crappy things happen to him, but he was also a
leader in helping to
change the game of college basketball to not being
such a white man's
sport. Unfortunately at that time he was going to
run in to a lot of
resistance, and that is why he endured the BS that
he did. However, at
this point in time he should be talking about all
the good things that
have happened thanks to what he and others did,
instead of talking
about all the bad things that have happened to him
in my life.

Obviously this is my opinion, but I just don't see
where his constant
hyping of what *HE* accomplished helps anybody,
including himself.
When he goes into hype mode he sounds like Barry
Bonds. Oscar's
numbers on the court speak more for him than any of
his self-hype
could ever do.

Jeff, I'll give you three examples of people who
I've run into in
recent years...

Uncle in LA - during the whole Bob Huggins fiasco he
was in Dayton
visiting and heard Oscar's rant on the radio. He
turned to me and said
"Why does anybody listen to this guy, he is
considered a bitter man
thanks to things he has said in LA.

Guy in Washington, D.C. 2 weeks ago when talking
about UC during the
UC vs Syracuse game - "Oscar was a great player, but
any time I see
him on SportsCenter now he sounds like a bitter man
because of his
bitching about the money the players make today."

Guy in Buffalo, NY, about 5 years ago - "Oscar is
the best player I've
ever seen play the game, but when I happened to meet
him in an Airport
a few years back he acted like a pompous a-hole. I
asked to shake his
hand, no more no less, and he refused and walked
off."

Who knows if they are telling the truth or not?
However, I can't think
of a reason why they would want to bash the guy for
no reason...

I've probably heard at least a half dozen other
stories similar to
this from people outside of Cincinnati. People on
this forum have even
talked about him being a jerk to them when asking
for an autograph, or
even kids who want an autograph. He is along the
same lines as Johnny
Bench (total a-hole to the fans).

According to a number of people who are anti-Bob
Huggins, "perception
is reality".

As far as becoming a Xavier fan, not a chance. I'll
let you in on some
info that most of the old timers on here know... my
2nd favorite team
(childhood team) is Dayton, so Xavier is the number
1 rival of both of
the schools I follow.

I am UC through and through, my school is not the
University of Bob
Huggins or the University of Oscar Robertson. I will
make decisions
with my money based on the direction of the
University, not based on
whether Bob Huggins, Oscar Robertson, Nancy Zimpher,
the BoT's, or Al
Uhrig/Cavs70 agree.

respect in terms of his
opinion. I've talked with people from east coast
to west coast, all
think he was a great player, but think personally
he is a bitter old
man.>>>>>>>>>
