I wondered how long it was going to take before we saw the "outcoached" post. Not that I disagree with all of this (especially using the timeouts), but the "outcoached" posts always come in this situation....

Subject: [UC Basketball] UC Outcoached

I know it is early in Mick Cronin's head coaching career, but Mick killed UC with some horrible coaching mistakes yesturday against UAB. UC is up 5 with 36.8 seconds to go. We make a terrible defensive error letting a guy walk into a three point shot with a 5 point lead. You just cannot allow that, however, that's a player error(one that may result from coaching but who's to say). So UAB cuts the lead to 2 and calls timeout. At this point UAB is going to foul. THEY ARE GOING TO FOUL!!! There is no reason for John Williamson to be on the floor. You can bring him in after someone is fouled. You can have him inbound the basketball, but you absolultely cannot have that poor a free throw shooter on the floor. So Williamson gets fouled, makes the first(thankfully), misses the 2nd. UC lets a guy get straight to the rim and score. Now probably Mick's biggest coaching error of the game comes into play. You absolutely cannot use all of your timeouts before the last
minute of a game, especially when you have an inexperienced team. UC messed up the inbounds play, it looked to me like McGowen started to call timeout, but realized he didn't have any. There is no excuse for not having a timeout at that point. UAB really only went on one run until the last minute of the game. UC should have had at least two timeouts left at that point in the game. WIth an inexperienced team it is essential. (The timeouts would have also come in handy for drawing up an inbounds play with say two seconds left, and down three) I hope for the success of UC basketball and the UC program. But yesturday I didn't see the game management skills that I saw with Bob Huggins, or even AK last year who did a great job give us the best chance to win with a very thin lineup. Mick has been dealt a very tough hand by the inept way our coaching change was handled. Other than Vaughn, I don't see any top teer Big East caliber starters on our team. However, if Mick had
managed yesturday's game better we beat UAB. Hopefully he'll from the mistakes and grow as a coach.
