The report from the Uleb site
Lukoil Academic showed its power right at the start of the ULEB Cup regular
season in Group C by downing visiting Telindus Oostende 91-77 in Sofia,
Bulgaria on Tuesday night. As such, Lukoil opens Group C with a big home win
which makes the perennial Bulgarian League champion tie atop the standings
with a 1-0 record, while Oostende dropped to 0-1. Todor Stoykov led the
winners with 22 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 6 of 7 free throws, but
Lamont Jones was the man of the game with a double-double of 20 points and
10 assists. Lamont Jones also posted a double-double of 14 points and 10
rebounds, Riste Stefanov had 12 points and Thomas Mobley added 11 for
Lukoil. Rashad Wright had 18 points for Oostende, Vanja Plisnic added 17,
Lavor Postell 13 and Elvir Ovcina 12. Lukoil already led 23-19 at the end of
the first quarter, while Jones had 11 points in the second period to make
the hosts boost their margin to 46-37 at halftime. Ovcina and Plisnic
brought Oostende within 53-48 midway through the third quarter, but Mobley,
Stoykov and an outstanding Jones allowed Lukoil to keep a safe lead all the
way and seal a well-deserved win long before the final buzzer.
Stoykov opened the score with a driving basket which Ovcina erased with a
reverse layup. Gjorgji Cekovski and Plisnic exchanged baskets, while Postell
buried a long jumper to give Oostende its first lead, 4-6. Barnes scored in
the paint, as Lukoil entered the foul bonus in just 3 minutes. Stefanov and
Plisnic exchanged triples, but Cekovski also hit from downtown to give
Lukoil a 14-11 edge. Barnes dunked it in a 7-0 run which Stoykov with a fast
break layup and forced Oostende to call timeout at 18-11. Wright stepped up
for Oostende with consecutive baskets, but Barnes dunked it while Stoykov
nailed his first basket for a 23-15 Lukoil lead. Plisnic answered from
downtown and Eric Hicks added a free throw for a 23-19 Oostende deficit
after 10 minutes. Hicks kept pacing Oostende with 2 foul shots early in the
second quarter, but Stoykov and Jones each had points in a 8-0 run which
gave Lukoil a double-digit lead, 31-21. Ovcina tried to change things with a
fast break layup which Jones quickly erased in the other end. Wright fired
in one from downtown and Toby Bailey dunked it to force a Lukoil timeout at
33-28, midway through the second quarter. Mobley, Jones and Cekovski nailed
consecutive triples to make Lukoil stay out of trouble at 42-32. Wright
shined with an acrobatic layup, igniting a 0-5 Oostende run which he capped
with free throws, but Brown scored in penetration while Jones beat the
buzzer with a jumper which gave Lukoil a 46-37 lead at halftime.
Mobley made a three-pointer from the top of the key and Barnes added a
put-back layup to give Lukoil a 51-37 lead right after the break. Ovcina
stepped up with 4 points in a 0-6 Oostende run which Plisnic capped with
foul shots for a 51-45 deficit. Barnes hit a turnaround jumper which Denis
Wucherer erased with free throws. Stoykov rescued Lukoil with a put-back
layup but Ovcina answered from downtown to make it a five-point game, 53-48.
Brown scored in transition and Stefanov fired in a corner triple for a
double-digit Lukoil lead, 58-48. Hicks came off the bench to score inside,
Jones and Plisnic exchanged triples while Postell hit a baseline jumper to
get Oostende within 61-55. Stefanov canned a five-meter jumper, Wucherer hit
free throws and Mobley scored in penetration for a 65-57 Lukoil lead after
30 minutes. Hicks tried to ignit the Oostende back with a layup but Mobley
stayed on fire with a triple which gave the hosts a 68-59 lead. Stoykov
stepped up with consecutive layups to force an Oostende timeout at 72-60.
Plisnic hit 3 free throws while Postell fired in a big triple to give
Oostende some hope at 74-67. Stefanov answered from downtown while Jones hit
a stop-and-pop jumper to make Lukoil keep a safe lead, 79-69. Stoykov sealed
the outcome with a corner three-pointer, as Oostende never recovered while
Jones hit an acrobatic layup to seal his big game in style.
-very easy home win against the second last in Belgium, and
again Eric hardly played. the oponent was nowhere.
-very intense match in
Ostend aginst the vice champion of Russia that we won. Normaly they are the
best team in our group. This is what they say of our group "This group could
easily be one of the toughest, most experienced ever seen in the ULEB Cup,
with Khimki,Montepaschi, Lukoil, Hapoel, Alba and Oostende."
Postell scored 30 points, our pg was showing for the first time what he can,
but more importently Eric got a lot of minutes and was doing great, his
screens were good, defence great and got his 14 points, his stats:
23:15min 14 points 6/7:2FG 2/3:FT 1 2 3:Rebounds ODT 1ST 1TO 1BL
Hopefully this is getting lots of other episodes in our normal competition
and in Europe
Here is the report from the Uleb site
Telindus Oostende brought the ULEB Cup back to its home fans in style on
Tuesday, by grabbing a first Group C victory by 93-88 over dangerous Khimki
of Russia. The result meant that all six teams in Group C are tied with 1-1
records after two games played. Lavor Postell hit 4 of 5 three-pointers and
10 of 11 free throws on his way to 30 points to lead Oostende, which had to
comeback from 7 points behind in the second half and outlast a late Khimki
rush. Elvir Ovcina was huge inside, scoring 17 points and pulling 11
rebounds for the winners, who also got 17 points from Rashard Wright and 14,
including key fourth-quarter baskets, from Eric Hicks. Khimki had five
scorers between 18 and 14 points, led by Oscar Torres. Kelly McCarty added
15, Vitaly Fridzon 14, Maceij Lampe and Melvin Booker 13 each. Oostende's
32-23 rebounding edge, 12-8 on the offensive boards, proved a key edge in a
close game.
Booker and McCarty got Khimki on the board quickly, but Guy Muya scored a
layup and a triple - his only points of the game - to post Oostende's first
lead at 4-7. Khimki quickly tied, but Oostende stayed a step ahead until
Booker's triple grabbed an 11-12 advantage for the guests. Postell's first
points got the lead back for Oostende, and he followed witha triple to
extend it. He then ended a scoreless 2 minutes with another from the arc to
complete an 8-0 run with Oostende leading 19-12. Vitaly replied from
downtown for the guests, but Postell, Vanja Plisnic and Rashar Wright rode
the quarter out for Oostende holding a 26-21 edge. With a triple to start
the second quarter and 3 more points soon after, Elvir Ovcina upped the
Oostende lead to 32-23. Torres and Ademola Okulaja shot Khimki back with
three-pointers, but Postell made one in between them and Eric Hicks helped
him keep the hosts up 37-31. Torres was hot however, and a pair of his
baskets now ignited a 0-9 Khimki blast that put the guests ahead, 37-40.
Soon, Fridzon was adding a triple to that, but Postell took over for the
hosts with 5 points in a row, including a dunk that restored the Oostende
lead, 44-43. Both sides traded points at the line until Plisnic returned
with a layup to keep Oostende up by the minimum, 48-47, at the half.
Another lead change began the third quarter, and by the time Torres, Booker
and Fridzon got involved, Khimki had a 3-9 run and a 51-56 advantage.
Oostende fought back point by point, with Rashad Wright canning a key triple
and Postell hitting free throws that cut the difference to 56-58. But
Fridzon was back with a triple to go with buckets by Ruben Wolkowysky and
Torres that gave Khimki its biggest lead, 58-65. Postell, Ovcina and Plisnic
rescued Oostende with the next 7 points, but before the hosts could tie or
go ahead, McCarty appeared with a triple and a layup to make it 64-70. It
was Oostende's turn now, and with an 11-5 closing run in which four players
scored, Wright hit a go-ahead layup to finish the third quarter 75-73. When
Ovcina and Postell tried to lengthen the advantage, Lampe matched their 5
points to keep Khimki close, at 80-78. The Oostende defense worked well as
Hicks and Ovcina got 4 points back, but neither team was giving up on this
game. Hicks kept the hosts going with a dunk and layup as McCarty and Booker
hit jumpers for Khimki. McCarty stepped up another pair of swishes that,
together with Vladimer Veremeenko's layup, had Khimki as close as 91-88
heading into the final minute. No more shots fell for the visitors, however,
and when they had to foul near the end, Postell was perfect from the line to
sew up Oostende's first victory of the new season.
2006/10/26, Jonathan Breiner <address@hidden>:
yes it is probably tough to come to a new country and not necessarily be
the
man, and have to adjust to the coach.
I hope he does remember it is a long season and makes the adjustments!
Thanks again for the continued updates!
Jon
