Funny thing you should bring up the binturoung...I was just thinking that
I've seen several of them at zoos around the country and none of them have
any red hair on them.

The difference is that UC has never been able to make up its mind whether
its Bearcat is a bear or some sort of member of the cat family. A Cardinal
is a Cardinal, "fighting" or otherwise, unless you want to put a religious
meaning to it (e.g., Demon Deacons), and since UofL is not only not a
catholic institution, but rather a public one, I doubt they would so. As
such there is only so much you can do to a Cardinal. On the other hand the
Bearcat is not identified as a specific kind of bear or cat, so the
permutations are endless, unless UC finally adopted the Binturong and its
image as the official Bearcat.

The Cardinal bird got a facelift, much like the Bearcat, to make him look
angry. Also, the costumed mascot also was given a more muscular look....
much like the new Bearcat.

This is nothing new. Its simply an evolution of the branding... as others
have mentioned, its just a way to increase sales of the athletic dept. and
maintain a "modern" look.

Case in point... when Pitino came to Louisville, they completely
redesigned
their logo, mascot, how "Louisville" is displayed on jerseys, hats, and
letterheads. They lapped all that new stuff up without a fuss.

i'll say again, the new bearcat looks beyond stupid. those red

for the obsessive sorts in the crowd who are stil talking about the
kansas state jerseys, go to www.uniwatchblog.com (written by a writer
for page 2 on
espn.com) and go to the news ticker section in yesterday's post....it
gave me a laugh.

I agree completely. The only tradition worth building is a winning
one.
When a college changes their logo or their uni's, I doubt that
tradition plays much of a role in the change. It's more about making
more money.
Case in point: when OSU changed their football jerseys before this
season,
there was a bit of an uproar about the new look. But, if you go
around Columbus, you will see a lot of fans are are buying the new
jerseys. And who gets a big cut from this revenue? The athletic
department of course.

I'll be honest...I've never been a big fan of the "Jordan Jump-man"
look
of
UC's basketball jerseys used over the past several years. I prefer
the more traditional shoulder strap look. I am looking forward to
seeing what the Adidas jerseys look like.

As for the new Bearcat mascot look, I can take it or leave it but I
am
not
going to make a big stink about it one way or the other. I am much
more concerned about the team on the floor.

I think there is A LOT more to tradition then a logo. Duke and NC
have changed uniforms (not logos). Tradition comes from years and
years of success and recognition, in BIG conferences, hence earning
that success against the best. Being in CUSA and priors, and not
doing mush at all
in
the tournament, makes it hard to have tradition. All of the
"tradition-having" schools are in the Big Ten, ACC, SEC, etc.

If we went to the sweet 16 or furher every year, with multiple Big
East championships, then we could change our logo/color/mascot every
year and still have some tradition.
