I don't question Cronin's honesty or your memory but Kenny Satterfield was a
star point guard in NYC, and was considered a great catch for the UC
program. He was on everyone's radar screen, one of the 2 best point's in
the City, and was thought of as a potential McD player before his senior
season started (wasn't his high school ranked first or second in the nation
for 2/3 years?). If you recall he was going around the summer camps before
his senior year started "recruiting" and we all thought it was great - he
was the single biggest influence in getting Lenny Stokes to sign, and then
Lenny beat him out for POY in NY State.
As to high school rankings - basketball and football are entirely different.
I won't argue with people who say there are just too many football players
for the rankings to be meaningful, but that simply isn't true in hoops.
Sure there are those that slip through the cracks, and those that overrated,
but it's interesting to note how many schools in the last 2 decades that
have won the national championship without at least 1 McD on their roster
(almost none). The high school kids play all year round, not just for their
schools, but for their AAU teams and at summer camps, so they can be seen
playing with and against the best players in the nation. I have to hope he
will get top talent, but if you're really going to rely on Cronin filling a
team full of kids who are ranked 150-300 and hoping for the best, I suggest
that we will perpetual bottom feeders in the BEast.

As Mick Cronin said to a bunch of BearcatInsider members over the summer,
recruiting rankings mean nothing.
He told a story about Kenny Satterfield barely being on the radar for
recruiting rankings, but after he committed to UC Cronin start pumping him
to the media. By the end of his senior year he was a HS All American.
Honestly, I don't care what the guys are ranked. I just want to see UC win
when the season starts. Thus far Cronin is 0-0. I also think UC is more
likely looking at 2008 before Cronin can really get his guys, as 2007 guys
were pretty picked over by the time he was named UC head coach.

Sounds good! Mick has 3 scholarships for 07 and already has a commit from a
player who if he stays away from previous injuries could move into the top
200 by next spring. Now if he can sign 2 more players who can be or are in
the
top 200 we will be well on our way. Don
