Both Alexander Johnson and Al Thornton were Close Calls for UC. The Bearcats were 2nd choice for Thornton and 3rd in line (behind Georgia and Fla St) for AJ.
Thornton was a late bloomer from Perry GA who was MVP of a GA postseason all-star game. Johnson was Parade A-A and recruited by schools like UConn and Kentucky in 2003.
Former assistant Keith LeGree had strong recruiting contacts in Georgia.
Trivia note - the first Bearcat to hail from Georgia was 6-5 Walter (Pete) Smith of Albany GA in 1967. He was a superb talent but got homesick and left during his freshman year.
