Re: coach hiring procedures

(Sorry for not pursing this earlier. I have been away from email). OK, that makes sense for the emergency situation of hiring Corrie, but I really was driving at something else. Namely, it seems, then, that proper procedures for hiring the new 'permanent' coach must be followed. If so, this would mean that the position must be advertised, follow non-discrimination laws, etc. Moreover, I expect that there are internal UC procedures that must be followed: a widely constituted search committee (faculty, student, alumni reps, etc) . There certainly used to be such procedures, as I had a friend that served on one such committee for hiring a football coach many years ago, and, if anything, I suspect that these procedures are now more etched in stone. So, I have two points. First, wouldn't it be nice if someone very committed to the BB program, and not NZ, could get appointed to the search committee? Of course NZ is going to try to stack the committee, but with the right connections and backside kissing someone might be able to wrangle an appointment. Anyone know any candidates? I'm serious, if anyone knows a connected person on campus who won't sell out to NZ put a bug in their ear. Not quite so seriously, I will volunteer to be the Alumni rep. :) (Note to NZ if you're reading this. I'm in love with you. Your plaids and high heels turn me on. UC/21 is wonderful!) Second, if it's an open application process, then Huggins should apply. Why not? If he is clearly the best qualified candidate, and he doesn't get offered the position, he sues.

I have meant to reply to this for awhile now! There are rules such as you
mention below for the hiring of all UC employees. The Corrie situation is
unique in that it was an "emergency" situation. More latitude is possible
in hiring in those situations as it would be a detriment to have to go
though weeks of postings and interviews etc. The earliest likely candidate
could not be hired for 1-2 months, where this was able to be completed in
less than 1.5 weeks.

Like most organizations, by law and policy UC has formal procedures that
must be followed when hiring employees. Things like the position must be
advertised, open to all qualified applicants, etc. Does anyone know if
these rules apply to coaches? I would guess that they would, but it seems
that they didn't for Corrie's position. Also, will the standard
procedures apply for the new head coach hire?
