And ultimately the success of those programs. No scholarships = no recruits.

The student athletes care. The money in UCATS goes directly to them. Less
money in UCATS means less available scholarships. To those student athletes
in less high profile sports it means quite a bit. It means the difference
between having a scholarship or paying for school themselves. I can imagine
that more than just accountants can undertand that.

who cares where the accountants say it comes from... it comes from the
athletic department.

I seriously doubt any UCATS money was taken out to pay for the buy-out,
but I do know that money from within the AD budget that was not marked for
BB use and was intended for other things (facilities, sports, necessities)
was used to pay for the buy-out. I'll be interested to see if this lawsuit
brought forth by the rowing team makes it to court and if the athletic
department has to open their books to the judge.

Dan, I do not know what your source is for assuming that UCATS money is
going toward the payment of Huggin's buyout. But to be sure that my
response is documented and authenticated, I sent an email to the
Foundation to request an explanation of the use of UCATS donations. The
response was clear, funds are used  "completely toward athletic
scholarships â?? nothing else,"

I also think that for the Foundation to do anything else with the funds
could put their status as a 501(c)(3) organization at risk with the IRS.

We should not forget that not all sports have full scholarships available
to all members of a team. Baseball (not sure about UC) usually has a
limited number to spread around. My original point was that I hope that my
donated share may work its way down to someone who otherwise would not
have benefited.
