"Video Coordinator Andy Assalay (sp?) was promoted to assistant. He is a smart guy and has been in charge of putting together tapes of opposing teams, their defensive and offensive sets, and individuals players .... so he has a lot of basketball knowledge."
This is also where I find concern for the team. Frank Martin seems to be a fairly good assistant. He has recruiting ties to lots of kids, and seems to handle kids well. We all hear how Keith LeGree had a this unbelievable basketball IQ, but he never could play like it. And when you ask players about LeGree (privately of course), they all say "he is just a practice dummy...he doesn't provide anything". And now Assalay????
Let me just say this. I grew up directly, right next door to this guy as kids, and our families were friends, (although I'm about 7/8 years younger than him). He never played little league baseball, basketball, football...nothing. Completely unathletic! Then all the sudden he starts coaching JV Basketball at Summit (or some small school like that). No offense to anyone, but Colerain Middle School could beat Summit's Varsity team. Keep in mind, Andy's father Lou is a huge booster and UCATS guy. I remember seeing Andre Tate come over and shoot hoops outside my house! Then Lou pulls strings and gets Andy the Video Coordinator position, which is basically a being a b*tch for the team; like an intern. Now that the Huggins thing happened, he gets promoted to Assistant Coach because no one else is there! I see him screaming plays, etc. But then I wonder...How does someone like him end up coaching the Bearcats??? Never even played grade school ball!!!
I realize this is how Mick Cronin stepped in the door at UC, but Mick was also all city in High School and was an amazing player. Give me Mick, Rod Baker, Dan Peters...anyone but Andy Assalay.
