Video Coordinator Andy Assalay (sp?) was promoted to assistant. He is a smart guy and has been in charge of putting together tapes of opposing teams, their defensive and offensive sets, and individuals players .... so he has a lot of basketball knowledge.
Not doubt Downey is quick and can get up and down the floor and to the basket at-will. Question remains whether he can be a "true" point guard and handle the pressure and pass for easy shots. He only had 3 assists last night and is a shoot first player. I love a point guard that can score but we need one that can pass also.
I think we should give Kirkland a little credit. There have been times whenaddress@hidden 11/23/2005 8:42 AM >>>
the rotations have shifted him to the 4 spot. For example, last night the
combination was Downey, Tilford, White, Kirkland, and Hicks. (I do think
there is a team chemistry problem in our future if Kirklands minutes
decrease to the 24 minutes I'm projecting.)
I've been impressed by Downey and McGowan.
After 2 games it appears 1 question has been answered - we should have good
point play with Downey handling the ball. A small question remains as
whether he will be able to handle defensively some of the taller guards we
will see in conference play.
I think our lack of size on the front line will hurt us later in the
season - we only outrebounded ISU by 1!
Hopefully, Kennedy will have a steep learning curve and minimize his
inexperience. So far so good, but last night it dawned on me, I believe
Kennedy is down a coach - am I correct - there are 2 assistants - Legree and
Martin?
New minutes projection:
Point: Downey 30, Muhammed 10
wing 1: Muhammed 15, Tillford 12, Coleman 8
wing 2: White 34, Kirkland 11
post 1: Hicks 19, Kirkland 13, Allen 8
post 2: McGowan 25, Hicks 15
Hicks 34
White 34
Downey 30
Muhammed 25
Kirkland 24
McGowan 25
Tillford 12
Coleman 8
Allen 8
Not a bad 8 man rotation.
FWIW - last night I did not see a whole of up tempo offense. There were
some nice steals from overplaying that led to layups, but for the most part
it appeared to me the team was running a half court offense.
Go Cats!

Actually, I was watching Muhammad last night thinking he had improved. With
his injury, he has taken on more of a supporting role that I thought showed
maturity. Last year he would have shot a bunch of 3's to try and overcome
his injury, kind of like AKirk shoots 3's to try and increase his
intensity<g>. Now as he gets his legs back under him, I expect more
production numbers, but Tilford got us back into the Murray game and then
Muhammad then took over (5 points and an assist during the 7-0 or 7-2 run)
and got us to the point where White's steal and dunk could tie the game.
I disagree about Muhammad, but at the same point and time, I do expect more
"numbers" from him as the season goes on.

Statistical analysis from the first two games pretty much sums up what I was
worried about coming into this season....Kirk and Muhammed show little to no
improvment. Downey is the best of the bunch from the newcomers and his
quickness and ability to break down the defense could be the key to the
season to neutralize our lack of size.
Here's the formula:
Points+Rebounds+Assists+Steals+Blocks - Missed Shots+TO's+Fouls
Player Total Adjusted for 40 Minutes
White 32 32
Hicks 32 34.6
Downey 19 33.8
Kirk 6 7.7
McGowan 12 17.5
Tilford 8 33.7
Allen 10 88.9
Muhammed 0 0
Coleman 5 19
Allens numbers are obviously skewed by his 3 for 3, 3-pt shooting last night
in just 10 minutes of action.
