No one said anything about sports funding the university's total budget, but empty seats on national television does not make for an attractive university....and for the most part those seats have been filled since 'the shoe' was built...and yes, UC is in the top 20 public universities in the country with respect to endowments, but that was the case long before the present management team began it's nonsense.

I wonder who would be held accountable if UC were to get booted from the Big East due to poor attendance and and not being competitive

I am going to be frank with the following comment. Anyone who thinks that declining attendance at basketball and football games will impact Nancy Zimpher's tenure at UC are grossly misunderstanding the power sports has at UC. UC is the 2nd largest university in Ohio and one of the largest in the nation. I doubt that the athletics department budget makes up even 5% of the total budget at UC. I believe the athletic department at UC is supposed to be self-sufficient. If it does not make enough revenue to pay its bills, I doubt that it can tap into UC's general budget to make up the difference. Instead, it will end up making cuts to make up the difference.
The only way Nancy Zimpher gets removed from her position is if she directly violates the terms of her contract with UC. And as far as I know, she has not done this. Yes, she and the BOT bungled the handling of Coach Huggins but that will not be grounds for her dismissal. If it were, she would be gone already.
When it gets right down to it, not attending and not supporting UC athletics hurts only one group of people and that is the folks who work in the athletics department. That includes the coaches and the players.
