Brad,

I in general agree with you. I will be pleasantly surprised if Allen is
able to play many minutes this year.

One point that should be kept in mind, if I read the profile of Allen
correctly - Allen's minutes last year were limited because he was recovering
from an injury.

His past performance does not give provide much evidence he will be able to
make a significant contribution against stronger opponents.

Go Cats - I Support Coach Huggins : )

If that was true he would've been starting and accumulating some nice stats.
But unfortunately he was a backup Center at an NAIA school averaging low
single digits in points and rebounds. How anyone can think he'll suddenly
be a solid high D1 contributor is beyond me.

This is speculation, but what fun is a forum without some speculation... but
I beleive Allen was playing at a Div II school not necessarily due to his
athletic ability, but more along the lines of attitude or academics. I view
him as more a JUCO transfer than a walk-on. Hopefully, with all the
situations he's been through, any attitude issues have long since passed.

I don't quite get it! When I first heard about a 6' 9'' transfer to UC
(Allen) I was pretty excited because teh height departent has always been
our achilles heel. But then the news that he was a division II player and
that he may not be able to adjust to the highest level was a total damper.

How come some of you still expect he'd contribute substantially? I dont
mean to dispute you but would just like to know why you feel he can make a
difference.

Another long standing puzzle to me is that of Soulee! What has he been
doing downing his scholarship money for 3 years now? In the few games he
was
given minutes in the end, he was a total cropper at the rebounds. Guys
half
his height were grabbing the ball better. In general , he looks
lackadaisical and its been 3 yrs (i think) in UC. Add to this the 1 yr he
spent somewhere in Pennsylvania. Now, how long does a player need to get
accustomed to the "american" style of play?

Heck! Look at manu ginobili, arroyo or nowitzki, all from outside the US.
they clearly have different styles and are outstanding performers! Its an
enigma to me that Soulee hasnt been given the boot after such
non-performance and showing no promise of getting better.

One more quick point : notice how rhondo took kentucky to a different
level with his intelligent work as point guard last season - in his
freshman
year? Whats to say downey may not be able to do that with his lightning
speed?

I'm just hoping to see a kick ass UC team full of fire this season. A
finish in the top 5 would be an excelent one, top 6 would be good as well.
but not 9. we're better than that!

I think he will be a difference maker... one way or
the other.

He does have that BBall player Build, and his shot
looked good(in the 10 sec' he was on the news)

I'm just really curious why he was where he was if
he was really skilled enough to play at this
level... (I know it's possible for sure... but
still)

If anything at least he can take up some space, and
probably has more skills that Souly.

I think one person everyone is going to overlook is
Allen. I just think he's got a lot of potential.
He has reasonable size and just looks like a ball
player. I don't know what his attitude is like, but
I would expect him to be very motivated following
all he's been through and to get an opportunity like
this would be a huge motivation.

He's travelled (excuse the pun), and I think he's
got a lot to bring to the team. That being said,
he's banging against Hicks every day in practice,
which can only make you a better player. I haven't
seen any of the practices, so those who have seen
him practice can comment, but with Hicks being a
leader this year, I would imagine he'd want the
other big guys to produce and would certainly push
him.

The odds of UC landing a big man after all that has
happened at the time it did almost seems like
destiny, so I'm going to keep a close eye on how
Allen performs, and I recommend everyone else do the
same.

I'll step up to the plate (sorry, free throw line)
on playing time at least:

20 minutes for Downey instead of 10, with that
time mostly coming from Tilford. I'm guessing
Downey is ready for the big time but Tilford
isn't. (I don't think the distinction between
point guard and 2 guard will be a big one this
year and expect whoever gets it will be pushing it
down court. I'd expect White, Moore, Kirkland or
Downey to be getting us into our half court
offense, depending on who's in the game and what
the defense is giving us.)

8 minutes for Herrera (I'm an optimist), with that
time coming from Coleman. Except when fouls (or
free throw percentages) cause a problem or against
the weaker teams on our schedule, I'd expect Coach
Kennedy would want to have two of the following
(Hicks, McGowan, Herrera and Allen) in the line-up
together. Coleman may be skilled, but muscle and
height in at least two players will be crucial in
the Big East.

My sense is that this will be a breakout year for
Kirkland - he'll think less and play more
instinctively without Huggins' pressure on him,
but he'll still have those defensive skills
Huggins demanded.

Despite the negativities and the uncertainties, I
think this year we'll surprise the forecasters who
have said 7th-9th in the Big East: the motivation
to do well to honor Huggins and the motivation to
do well in order to get a job (the seniors + the
coaches) or a transfer opportunity (the
non-seniors, if the new coach doesn't look
appealing) will be powerful factors. That said,
this would not have been an easy year for UC, even
with everybody back and all our recruits in place,
so expecting better than 4-6 in the Big East would
have been unrealistic...

It's odd - people say they want to talk about
the team, basketball, the
season, etc - but when I posted about this
years rotations - no one
responded . . .

Since I have to say it - the post was pretty
good - so I'm going to repost
some of the info:

The upcoming season 3 big questions and one
lingering one -
BIG
1) Who will handle the point?
2) Who will get the 40 minutes at the 5
position?
3) How will a first year head coach do?
Lingering
1) Will Kirkland play to his potential?

The Bearcats do not nearly look as good as
they did last May - since then
we've lost Vincent Banks, Roy Bright, Tyree
Evans, Ivan Johnson and coach
Huggins!

This years projected rotation -
Point - White 15, Moore 10, Downey 10, Jihad 5
2 guard - Jihad 23, Kirkland 5, Tilford 12
3 forward - White 17, Kirkland 17, Coleman 6
4 forward - Hicks 20, Kirkland 10 Coleman 10
5 forward - McGowan 20, Hicks 12, Allen 8
(Herrera if he gets cleared will
get at lease these 8 minutes)

Hicks 32
White 32
Kirkland 32
Muhammed 28
McGowan 20
Coleman 16
Tilford 10
Moore 10
Downey 10
Allen 8

To be honest, I can't figure out the front
line - the above scenario assumes
Kirkland will be willing to play in the four
spot - a huge assumption and it
still remains to be seen if Kirkland can come
prepared to play every night.
The other alternatives are to get more minutes
out of McGowan and Allen or
Herrera if he gets cleared to play.

For what it is worth - here's my last year's
prediction and (actual):

Maxiell 33 (31)
Hicks 32 (31)
White 30 (29)
Kirkland 30 (25)
Moore 25 (15)
Williams 20 (22)
Muhammad 15 (26)
Banks 5 (0)
Bright 5 (14)
Souleyman 5 (1)
Lucas (12)
Patswald (3)
Meeker (2)
Murray (2)
