Used to be the only people familiar with Sonny Weems were the ones across the bridge in West Memphis.
But now that the former West Memphis High basketball standout is one of the nation's most sought junior-college prospects, Weems, a rising sophomore at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, is basking in the attention.
"It's been lovely down here," Weems said of Fort Smith, where as a freshman last season he was named a National Junior College Athletic Association third-team All-American after averaging 17 points and five rebounds per game for the 29-4 Lions.
"I've been surprised by the attention I've gotten because in high school I didn't get too much."
Weems, an ultra-athletic 6-6, 200-pound swingman who Rivals.com ranks as the No. 3 junior-college prospect in the Class of 2006, recently narrowed his college choices to Cincinnati, Oklahoma and the University of Memphis.
And though Weems would not declare a leader for his services, his stepfather, Darrel Levy, did.
"He told me the other day he's leaning toward Memphis because it's close to home," Levy said.
"I think in the next few weeks or so he'll know a lot more. We're still trying to gather information, and he wants to do his visits."
Weems, who also had scholarship offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, UAB and Washington, was one of only two freshmen named to the NJCAA's top three all-America teams last season.
Coastal Georgia Community College freshman Will Shackleford was named to the second team.
