My guess at Paul's response: "Nope, it was Goin."
:)
Seriously though, you bring up an interesting point. How much of the credit does Steger deserve? After all, it was almost 100% his university that Zimpher was selling. Zimpher had zero role in the design program and architecture program being #1 in the country. She had no role in Dean Larry Johnson's turnaround of the College of Education (and CH). She had no role in the building of the engineering program. She basically was the salesperson for the product Steger built.
Now I have been hard on Steger over the years, but I'd like to revisit my %'s from earlier this morning:
Huggins 40%, Goin 40%, Steger 15%, Zimpher 5%. I think we cannot ignore what Steger has done. Maybe it is a case of I wish he would come back and administrate the athletics side of things and Zimpher could then focus on academics. Me thinks that Zimpher still thinks she is running UW-Mil and has not noticed (or worse ignored!) the differences.
And one more thing before I go off to church, Mike S. mentioned it, and I am fairly certain that Zimpher has an advisory committee for all of this. Wouldn't Goin be on it? How could they (he) have not foreseen what would happen here. If anyone knew what Huggins means to most fans, Goin would. I wonder if a) he was not on the comm., b) she ignored his advice, or c) "we do not know everything that's going on." My issue is that I believe it is c) which further supports how poorly Zimpher has handled this situation.

Well if you're going to assign plaudits where they're due, and completely ignore the past 15 years of basketball dominance, then let's give credit to Joe Steger. Afterall, he saw Goin's experience in playing off 2 large conferences, ultimately getting the ACC invitation for FSU, despite Bobby Bowden's preference for the SEC. It was Steger who stuck his neck out by hiring Goin despite his having been forced out of FSU in the wake of allegations of currying financial favor from a contractor who was also working on the stadium.
