Word has it that the 2 most influential coaches in the Big East, Jim
Boeheim and Jim Calhoun, both were HUGE Huggins supporters. Somehow I
doubt any baggage would have lasted long with those 2 guys vouching for
him.

I had the same impression as Richard. The BE had to be sold on UC.
Goin did that job superbly, and my understanding has always been that
Zimpher helped considerably. Huggins was a mixed blessing: the strength
of the bb program was a plus, but its baggage was a negative that
greatly concerned some BE members. Huggins supporters who want to give
him so much of the credit must, by the same rationale, also credit
Minter for getting us into all the bowl games. Had he not done so,
perhaps we couldn't have sold the BE on us.
