I disliked Paul Daugherty's article for several reasons
1) he calls those who are supporting Huggins - "mouth-foaming Huggins
campers." And at the end of the article has the nerve to say, "If we could
get past the hot talk spew - we can, can't we?" I guess it always good to
call for getting past the hot talk spew after you've spewed.
2) He gives Cox a very gentle pass - " might see a guy whose one verbal
misstep"
A) Daughtery never quotes the "verbal misstep" - "And I have to tell you, as
a person who happens to be African-American, there is a concern for anybody
who gives the impression that the only athletes you can find may be carrying
a gun or face other charges from the police. Other schools find
African-Americans who are good students as well. I hope we can do it too."
Phil Cox UC Board Chairman."
B) Cox was doing more than making a message about helping to inspire and
support African Americans to be better. He was being the mouthpiece for the
Board of Trustees and the administration in a bungled fight with its head
basketball coach. One question that was not addressed was why Cox felt the
need to use SI as a forum to address this issue?
3) The whole piece lacks balance. It also Cox to portray the himself and
the BoT and the administration as concerned about excellence - the implicit
message is that Bob Huggins has not promoted excellence. I am hard pressed
to understand Daugherty could not challenge that unfair portrayal.
4) Finally, Cox's defense is lame. My comment can't be racist because I've
experienced racism. That is the gist of the whole article. What ever
happened to examining the merits of his quote - is it accurate. Who gives
the impression the only athletes we can recruit are thugs? Huggins? Have
all the athletes Huggins recruited carried a gun or face charges? etc? Why
is it inaccurate? Why doesn't Daugherty hold Cox accountable to what he
said and make him defend it?
I support Huggins!

From Lance McAlisters website today (Friday) -
"Paul Daugherty joins me at 4pm"
"Paul Daugherty tells me emails are running at a rate of 10-to-1 against
him......he says only the rational people are agreeing with him :)"

I'm still wondering if fans are mad at Daugherty or Cox ? Cox is the
obvious response.
If Daugherty would have interviewed Huggins, wouldn't fans have been happy
with the article.
Is it guilt by association since he interviewed Cox ?
The mistake Daugherty did make as a journalist is not getting a quote from
Cox about the 'gun' comment he made, so it will be interesting to hear a
response by Doc to that thought. Many folks I've spoken to (of various
races) were more upset with that comment than the other.
You all know I'm a big Huggins backer (especially given the fact I just
dropped off another shipment of shirts to DuBois and the Montgomery Inn),
but I'm also wanting to be fair.

Daugherty has evolved like many other columnists into a self-important,
cynical, sarcastic bore.
I have enjoyed many of his columns in the past, but it's clear that he
has read too much of his own press and is now a much greater being than the
rest of us who subscribe, advertise and ulitmately pay his salary.

My letter to Paul Daugherty
Mr. Daugherty,
You did a good job of bringing up most everything about Mr. Cox except
for
what this entire mess is about. While I agree with you that the
examples you
gave does show how others in this area are stuck in the prejudice
past, it
has nothing to do with why he decided to speak without thinking first.
In
fact, the attitude he portrayed in his statement shows a prejudice
portrayal
of UC athletes, especially black UC athletes! Do I think that's what
he
meant? No, but the bigger issue is how someone in such a high position
at UC
can speak without thinking first. Reading that article again is mind
boggling to say the least!
His response.
Nope, the bigger issue is what the prez and the board think is best
for the
U... thanks...PD
