Grizzlies' workouts become 'physical'
Former Bearcat among three draft candidates
By The Memphis Commercial Appeal
June 2, 2005
Most Grizzlies observers agree the team needs to get tougher up front.
Wednesday's workout of NBA Draft candidates focused on just that. "We're
trying to organize the workouts a little differently this year, and I guess
this was our 'physical' day," said Tony Barone Sr., the Griz director of
player personnel.
In to work out Wednesday were Jason Maxiell, a 6-7 forward from Cincinnati;
Linas Kleiza, a 6-8 forward from Missouri; and Martellus Bennett, a 6-7 prep
forward from the Houston area who was also recruited by Division 1 colleges
as a tight end.
"You've all seen Jason play at Cincinnati," Barone said. "He has incredible
timing and he has long arms obviously, but his timing around the basket
defensively is really good, and he's a very nice 15-foot-and-in player --
great body, great physical toughness.
"We wanted to see the physicality of this group and all three of them can
do that, they're all physical players. In the league, the back lines are
physical. If you're not physical, you don't survive."
Maxiell, who averaged 15.3 points and 7.7 rebounds last season, said he's
trying to impress NBA scouts with his work ethic. "Even though I'm
undersized, I understand that the only way to get into this league is to
play hard every day, and that's what I do."
Kleiza averaged 16.1 points and 7.6 rebounds for Missouri last season.
Bennett, considered one of the best football recruits in Texas and a Texas
A&M signee in that sport, averaged 23 points and eight rebounds in his
senior year in high school.
