I simply thought the commercial was a little close the edge. I mean I have seen dozens of coaches doing commercials over the years. I've just never seen one that spends 98% of the commercial talking about his philosophy in this way. I mean the first time I saw it I wasn't paying much attention and I thought CBS was running some sort of Duke video they use for recruits.
It just seemed a bit unethical to me.
In fact I don;t know if I've EVER seen coach K endorse or commercialize his celebrity. But I bet he was all over this when AMEX offered it. I would be if it was UC. My question was mostly targeted at the NCAA rules around such things. Is anyone aware of any regulations about recruiting using the major mass media?
Oh, BTW, I agree with Mr. Breiner. There is a double standard with Duke, and it's not sour grapes. During Jason William's junior year there was a report (60 minutes, I believe) about this very subject. There is a special academic 'basketball' program at Duke.Yes, they get their pick of recruits, but I'm fairly sick of the claims that Duke players are somehow more 'academic'. I mean the interview with Jason Williams in the program I mention was sad. He was complaining how hard it was as a student at Duke, because he had to write 2 20-page papers that quarter. Wow! That's really tough!

I don't think that the commercial will either help or hurt dook recruiting. They don't really have to recruit, just "select" which players they want, they are already lined up. Coach K is portrayed in a certain light but behind closed doors, at halftime, he is exactly like Huggs, they just don't include that. Let's not worry about their program, let's worry about our 3 scholly's left and by the way, are there going to be three or four left since Chadd Moore will be a medical redshirt?

I'm surprised that nobody has commented on the AMEX commercial during the tournament games featuring Coach K. Does anyone else feel like that commercial borders on a recruiting commercial? I just think they're really pushing the envelope. Does anyone know if there are NCAA rules preventing this kid of thing?
