Subject: [UC Basketball] No time for Souleymane???

I was surprised that Souly did not get into the game. However, here are some
observations from this game.

Hicks will score!!! It wont be as easy against division I opponents, but he
will score. Defensively he may not even be close to the 5 that Kareem was,
but he will score WAY more points.

the way Hicks played tonight, he will be the star of this team and we may have more of an inside presence with him and Max than we ahve previously thought. Of course the depth will be an issue when there is foul trouble.

Bright will give valuable minutes to the interior. I was impressed
offensively and defensively by him.

He looked real good in the final minutes when he had most of his points. I thought he looked a bit tentative at times, but he will give us some minutes. I think he will have to play some 4 for this team and will get more minutes if he rebounds well.

Muhammad can give us the scoring point we've been missing. Think of Logan,
but don't expect him to have all his attributes yet. Offensively he's there
already, give him time on his defense and understanding of the offence.

He is very quick and once he gets comfortable in the offense, lookout. Most of his scoring was one on one in the second half when the offense kind of stopped running, but he truly will be an asset.

Moore is healthy! While not the scorer that Muhammad is he knows the offence
better which is evident by his 6 assists tonight.

Yea, the offense ran when Moore was in. He is strongly the starting PG right now as he knows what to do, but it was nice to have 2 PG's who are really PG's and are both good!

Max and White continue. Just like last year but with more experience!!!
Double digit scoring from both and a total of 14 rebounds between them. Cant
say much more.

Max is Max. Tory Reed (transfer from Charlotte) really wanted to to take it to him, and Max ate him up at both ends. My guess is Reed finished with 6 points 6 rebounds and 6 TO's (4 of which were travelling trying to make a move on Max or Hicks). On one play Max tried to do a spin move around Reed and Reed fouled him and then gave him a push. It would have been a T in a real game, but Max just walked away and smiled. Such an even keel and smart player. I am goin to miss him alot!

White on the other hand has to become a smarter player. Way skilled, but at times was a bit out of control. I know it is hard in these kind of games, but perfect practice makes perfect!

Kirkland??? Not sure what to say except he needs to work on his shooting.
Ofer eight???

Ugly. I already said something in aother post. The only thing I will add is the "topper". In the final minutes, when the players usually try to get it to Meeker (or now also Patzwald) for a shot, he ignored them and forced the ball one on one 3 times. He turned it over twice and then got lucky when he pushed off ona guy, but Steve Welmer called it a block. He should have had 3 TO's int he final minutes when he could have been trying to feed it to the "little" guys, but was selfish and poor in his execution at that. He could not even be selfish right! He was THE biggest disapointment.

I was also surprised by Patzwald and Murray. Murray had some clean-up points
off of a missed shot and from the announcers comments it sounded like he
just appeared there to take it! Hopefully this guy can develop and give
valuable minutes. Patzwald had a steal at the end of the game, hopefully he
can also develop quickly to give us some minutes.

Patzwald is 5'9" and 180. A very stocky spark plug that will I will not see any minutes this year. He is a hustler though and will play the walk on role well. Murray could actually see some minutes. Mostly because he looks like he can bang and rebound a bit if needed and I see a few games this year where we might need a few fouls. I think he is too raw to count on for production though.

Only wish I have before the next exhibition game is that the defense gets
better. Oh, and also that we see Souly play and find he is exactly the
person we need to give the post players time to catch there breath.

The defense was very good early on, but the team played with no killer instinct and let down once they built the lead up. I am not sure why Souly did not play, but would have liked to have seen him.
