I agree with most everything you said. I was only pointing out that UC
was very close to finishing 5th in the conference last year, and if they
had, it wouldn't have been that big a deal.
I do have one major (and not surprising) concern, however, with this
team. You'll remember the home game against Marquette 2 years ago when
Robert Jackson, Scott Merritt, Terry Sanders and Todd Townsend simply
destroyed UC's front line. I fear that will happen at least once this
year, and if it does in mid-March, we'll be talking then about our lack
of size the way we have been about needing a quick point guard.
Fortunately, we'll also be able to talk about at least part of the
solution (Herrera, maybe another "5") being on the way.

If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets
If wishes were horses, beggars would ride
etc.
Fact is, they did make those shots (which, by the way, really weren't
any more important than the 1st basket made that game, or the 15th)
I'm usually a bit af a naysayer, but I think the Cats will be a pleasant
surprise this year
IF:
-Hicks improves as much this year as he did last year
-Chad or Jihad becomes the quick, push it up the floor point we've so
sorely lacked
-Kirkland, White, Bright, Banks, Williams or Pilgrim - 2 of these guys
need to be consistent scorers - I'm assuming Max already is and that
Hicks will get some along with rebounds
SO:
Soulymane's contributions, if any, will be a bonus
They will be deep - that's a positive
There will be no Whaley - positive
I think that the trio of Moore, Kirkland & Hicks are poised to really
hit their stride - Max is a senior - the JUCO's and transfers (White and
Williams) are in their 2nd year - ready to blossom
Huggins should be rested, revitalized and rededicated
The new guys are talented - one or the 3 (Bright, Banks, Pilgrim) will
have a majpr impact - they all may contribute
I think they will be a much better TEAM than last year
I know everything seems brighter at the start, but I really think this
team will over-achieve for a change

If Field doesn't make the jumper to send the Louisville game into
overtime, or Bobbitt doesn't make the 3 to put UC ahead of Memphis late,
UC finishes in 5th last year. Following that with a conference tourney
championship and a 4 seed in the Dance wasn't a disaster.
A 5th place finish this year, in a conference as strong at the top as
C-USA, would not be up to UC's normal standard but still wouldn't be a
disaster. Follow that up with another tourney title, NCAA top 4 seed
and (this time) Sweet 16 appearance (or better) and it's all good.
Especially without a single true "5" on the roster.
IMO, of course.

Street & Smiths college mag. has UC slated for 5th in conf. usa. I can
see
where on paper they can do this because UC has a lot of question marks.
If I
thought UC was going to come in 5th in the conf. Id just go and jump
off the
bridge right now and get it over with. Don
