RE: Thoughts on this year's team

Don't forget about Kirkland. He didn't shoot many but he did make over 45%
of his threes last year. He could be an outside threat. Guys like Kirk and
White don't have to be great shooters from three, but be good enough to keep
the defender honest and then they can use their superior height and athletic
ability to penetrate.

Plus, having a 6'7" or 6'9" 2-guard who can post up smaller defenders will
be nice. That worked against Lousiville last year when Kirk posted up his
man for the game winning shot.

This wasn't neccessarily what I think the team will actually look like, it
was more like wishfull thinking and what I would like to see happen.

Regarding White, it seemed like he was working on his outside shot during
last summer, although it didn't seem to show during the season. My hope
would be that he has worked on his perimeter game because he has the ball
handling skills to play the 2G spot. As long as he can hit the 3pt shot,
here are the 2 main reason why I would like him at guard:

1. Increases our overall height and increases our chances at getting more
rebounds out of the guard position.

2. With white being able to hit outside shots, it gives us the versatility
to have him at 2G for an overall bigger lineup or move him to SF when we may

need to go smaller.

Of course if White doesn't develop a perimeter game, I agree that we would
be better off with Williams/Banks there. Making outside shots is going to
be extremely important to how well this team does.

The exciting thing, I think, is the approach Huggs has
taken. From what I understand, he has been watching
tape of Oklahoma State and St. Joe's, with the
intention of fully utilizing the gaurds when faced
with a size disadvantage.

I find this refreshing, as he's gone from lamenting
years of bad luck to finding a solution. We'll see
how this proactive approach translates into his team's
performance.

I'm also excited about the return of Chadd Moore. I'm
guessing he'll start at the beginning of the season.

I disagree with White at SG. He couldn't hit the
broad side of a barn last season. Why go with him
when you have Williams and Banks?

With the season approaching closer, I thought it
would be fun to speculate
on how the players will perform. There are
obviously many questions to this
year's team, but here is what I would like to see
happen along with some
starter stats:

PG
(starter) Jihad becomes the true PG we have been
waiting for. He is quick
and fast, able to penetrate defenses, distribute the
ball, run the offense
effectively, and make shots and free throws.
10pts/7asst

(backup) Moore is finally healthy and serves as a
high quality backup. When
Jihad is out of the game, we do not loose a beat.

SG
(starter) White develops a consistent perimeter jump
shot to go along with
his superior athletic ability and ball handling
skills to become the 2nd
leading scorer on the team and the most versatile
player. Due to our lack
of height in the post, it will be a plus having a 2G
with height.
15pts/5reb/3asst

(backups) Williams becomes comfortable and effective
at his natural
position. He becomes the offensive spark off the
bench. Banks mostly gets
garbage minutes and takes this year more as a
learning experience, but watch
out for next year.

SF
(starter/backup) I'm kinda torn at this position.
I'm extremely excited
about Bright and I think he could contribute
significantly right away, but I
would also like to see Kirkland play up to his
potential. Perhaps a split
role like Bobbit and Field last year at the 2G? I
think Bright could also
play some spot minutes at PF due to his rebounding
ability. I would like to
see 10pts/6reb from the starter at SF.

PF
(starter) Max continues to refine his low post game
and improve his jumper.
17pts/10reb/3blk

(backup) Pilgrim shows off his athletic ability and
is able to provide
quality back up minutes as the first big man sub off
the bench. Bright also
sees some minutes at PF.

C
(starter) Hicks brings his fiery competitiveness to
each game and becomes a
monster on the blocks even with his lack of height.
11pts/8reb/2blk

(backup) Pilgrim is the first post player off the
bench, but Souley develops
as the season goes on to be able to provide some
quality backup minutes.

I know I have each starter averaging double-digit
points and that's probably
not likely, but hey, this is just what I would like
to see. In any case,
I'm just getting very excited to see how this team
turns out.
