Just Curious

From: Harris, Derek C

With Midnight Madness just over
30 days away, I was curious to know
who you think will be are starting
five for the 2004-05 season. I know
Maxiell, White, and Hicks probably will
be starting but the PG spot and SG spot
can be debated. From what I have heard
Chadd is playing at 100% and no longer
has the lingering back problems. I could
see him starting the season, but Jihad could
end up starting by seasons end. The Shooting
guard spot is my main area of concern. We
have 3 potential starters in Williams, Banks,
and Kirkland. Nick was very disappointing
last season and hopefully he can have a Tony
like senior year. He never looked very
comfortable last year. Kirkland might start
due to the overall lack of height on this
team. We may need him to grab some boards
for us, but he needs to make his 3point shoots
to keep the defenses honest. The wild card is
Vincent Banks. He is capable of putting up
big numbers in a hurry and can create his own
shot. With the lack of outside threats on this
team he may play 20 minutes a game and possibly
start against some teams. Again, I am curious
to find out what everyone else thinks. 34 days
and counting until midnight madness.

I love that thinking however, looks like Davis is a long shot. We do need a
C to make your class complete. Huggs will find a way.

If I was Huggs, I wouldn't want Downey, Eaton, and Clemente because that's
3
point guards and Eaton wouldn't like that. If I had the chance to pick any
four players to finish the class of 2005, it would have to be: Byron Eaton,
Denis Clemente, Gary Flowers, and James Davis. I think that team would fit
UC most and Clemente might be the next Francisco Garcia (UofL) and could
maybe play wing. It seems to me that Eaton will be Mickey D's AA and
Clemente might be one of the best under rated players. Davis is 7'0 and it
looks like he could be the starter over Soully. I can also see Flowers
being (hopefully) the next Maxiell. I think this would be one of the best
classes, but that's just my 2 cents...

Magnum Rolle is off the board.
He committed to LSU today.

Rolle I believe we are a long shot at
landing, plus he has a lot of academic
issues that need to be resolved. Madsen
I have not heard to much on, but
he did not have an impressive summer. I
know he has some offers on the table, but
this is UC. We have an opening spot in the
post for next year. A year when we will
be playing in the best basketball conference
ever. I would hope we could land a player with
more credentials then a guy who averaged 13points
and 7 reb in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio.
Maybe he is a late bloomer...I think Gause and
Madsen are 3rd to 4th options at this point.

Jovan Adams committed to UNLV. You also left Magnum
Rolle and Madsen off the list.

Huggs rarely makes his in-home visit schedule public.

Tomorrow begins the open contact period
for coaches to make in home visits with
potential recruits and I wanted to make a
few comments in regards to who we are
actively recruiting. Looking at the list
of present recruits on this website, three
of them have made verbal commitments to
other schools. Tyler Smith verballed to
Tennessee this past weekend, Ben McCauley
committed to NC State, and Ryan Boyd
committed to Southwest Missouri State last
week. UC has 4 scholarships to give out to the
class of 2005. One has already been given to
Tyree Evans and one needs to go to a point guard,
but
which one is the millions dollar question. For
those of
you that have a computer that allows you to play
video's
off the internet rivals.com has video on Eaton,
Clemente,
Downey, and Flowers. Watching the three potential
point guard recruits I would have to say that would
fit
UC's system best at this moment. Watching Dennis
Clemente's video I am not sure there is enough balls

to share between Banks, Bright, Evans, and Clemente.

Offense would not be a problem with this group, but
I
think they would lake a true playmaker. Downey is
looked to be a shoot first point guard as well. He
is
extremely quick, but he looks to be very thin.
Giving up
20-25 pounds and 2-3 inches in height may hurt his
ability
to put up the same numbers in college. Eaton looked
to
be the best fit for UC. He can get into the lane,
make
the mid range jump shoot, shoots free throws very
well.
Downey only shoot 57% from the FT line in one of
the tournaments this past summer. Byron also to be
a
very aggressive defender. With Banks, Bright, and
Evans
coming to UC this team does not need another scorer
from
the perimeter. They need a point guard who
understand the
system and can create shots for his teammates. I
have
to believe UC is a lock for one of this three
players. On a
good note Jovan Adams is suppose to choose between
UNLV and Arkansas by the end of the week. If he
chooses
the Hogs that would eliminate them from recruiting
Clemente and
Downey. Again, I will take any of the three but
Eaton would fit our
systems best. Mike, do we know of any in home
visits that Huggins
has scheduled?? We have two remaining scholarships
to give and
both should go to a post player. My concern here is
that if Flowers or
Davis commit to another school UC will be back in
the Juco ranks
recruiting another Derek Hollman or Kareem Johnson.
Has anybody
heard anything about Leo Criswell-teammate of Tyree
Evans at Winchendon?
Sorry for the long post, but this should be a very
exciting time for UC
basketball.
