But think about the recruiting in general. In EVERY given year, OSU is a possibility to get the best player from Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, Columbus, Dayton, and yes, even Cincy. Xavier is a possibility EVERY year to get the best player from Cincy, but not the other cities. There is a difference between sometimes getting the best and having an opportunity to always get the best. With Matta at OSU, I think the latter will now happen.
Also, don't forget OSU's tradition. They have Championships and recent final fours. Xavier has none of that. Add on the alumni base and AD budget. To me it is no contest, especially for a guy who has always dreamed of coaching in the Big 10. His biggest hurdle will be getting over the next 2-3 years, but my guess is he gets at least a 5 year contract and Geiger will be patient with him, but likely will want to see something good by years 3 and 4.

When people think of Ohio State they think of football. When you think UC, Duke, Kentucky, UConn you think basketball. At tOSU basketball will always take second fiddle. Why do you think they had to choose from the second tier guys to begin with? Don't you think if half of what you were saying below were true that guys like Mark Few would be jumping all over this job?
Nobody is saying it is a bad job I just don't think it is a better job than X especially with the probation coming. Thad had things going very well and Xavier is known as a basketball school. I don't see recruiting at tOSU as a better place then Xavier. If I had access I would pull up the last 10 years worth of recruiting players for Xavier against Ohio State. I bet 7 of those years Xavier has had the better recruiting class. I also think the stress will be a lot less at X then Ohio State. Just my two cents. Who really cares though it is X and tOSU not UC.
Come on Mike R. give me some good recruiting news.

I don't see why so many people are saying that this job is so bad. I am not an OhioStatefan at all but even I recognize the rewards with taking this job.
1. Matta will likely increase his salary by 25-100% or more and with the likelihood of NCAA sanctions being placed on the program he won't be pressed to have a winning program for several years.
2. OhioStatehas one of the largest alumni bases in the country and one of the largest athletic operating budgets to work with.
3. They are in the big ten which everyone assumes is only a football conference despite placing a team in the final four almost every year.
4. From a recruiting standpoint I'd say with the right coach OSU is much more attractive than X.
5. Matta may have had his best run he'll ever have at Xavier and he hasn't had a lot of other schools beating down his door. If he wants to make a jump to a larger and more recognizable university this may be his best chance. If he stays at Xavier and has a couple of mediocre years he may not get any other offers.

Okay from reading this below I can assume if Walker and Mayo go to college it will either be UC or Louisville. I don't know about you guys but I am sick of seeing Louisville's name. This of course is if they want to play together. The question I have for the forum is would you take both of them to have only 1 year? This is the class of 07 so if we could get a big man in the class of 06 what a great team that could be. We would have Bright and Banks as Juniors. Evans will be a junior. All top 100 players. Throw in a big guy this year with a guy like Eaton and that could be a championship team. Soulman would then be a Senior> Sorry just dreaming and typing at the same time. I'm sure they both are going straight to the NBA play ground.
07/07/04: "Louisville, Connecticut, Syracuse, Cincinnati, and West Virginia make up the early list for 6'4 Soph O.J.Mayo from Cincinnati (North College Hill) OH. Cincinnati, Louisville, and Kentucky were mentioned by 6'5 Soph Billy Walker from Cincinnati (North College Hill) OH." - HoopScoop
I don't care much about Matta but I just didn't like the way he did this. Don't say your not interested in the job if you are and how much you love your current university. That is the ultimate backstab. I have no problem with him taking the job if he doesn't make those stupid statements. However, I do think if he would have waited he could have found a better situation or team. I think it is a really dumb move by Matta. I would have stayed at Xavier till a much better job came down the road. A job in the ACC, SEC or the Big East where basketball is king.
Do you think with Matta as coach at tOSU that UC and tOSU will play now? I really don't care to see us playing them though. With going to the Big East I think we will have our hands full. I also think that Butler will now stay with tOSU. He was considering Xavier so no reason for him not to stay at tOSU unless the go on major probation.
