I'll take a less cynical point of view. With 317 D-1A colleges all have 13
players that's 4,121 athletes. With about 30 high school and college
underclassmen going to the draft that's only 0.7% of the players leaving
early.

Duke, while being robbed of one high school player and 2 underclassmen still
has 6 McD's AA's on their team. Every team with good players has a chance
to get hit and Duke is the one team in the nation that can easily reload
year in and year out. This may be a partial reason why he's considering
leaving....but I'd say it is only a small factor.

Real reasons he's considering leaving.
1. He's closer to the end of his career than the beginning so even if he
fails at the pro level, he doesn't have to worry about finding another job.
He can just retire.

2. An estimated $40 million in salary over the course of his contract.

3. An ownership stake in the team.

4. It's the Los Angeles Lakers!

5. If he's serious about wanting to coach in the NBA at some time in his
career, coaching for LA with that type of salary is as good an offer as any
coach is gonna get.

Ill take an even more cynical view. I dont think any college basketball
fans should take this lightly. I believe a big reason for his consideration
has more to do with the current state of college basketball. Let's face it,
college basketball is no longer what it used to be. The players are no
longer considered the best 19-22 year olds in the world and as a result the
college coaching profession has lost a lot of its allure.

I know a lot of people are actually salivating at the fact that the team
that everyone loves to hate is losing its leader but I think that the entire
world of college basketball would be worst off without coach K.

When things get tough, Coach K goes to LA.

Given the pass Duke basketball always gets, I have to give my cynical take.

Coach K has enjoyed a good ride at Duke because of the clear advantages he
has had over the past 7 years (or so). He has been in the premier
conference and his biggest rival has been in a constant flux with coaching
changes. Now that is changing. With expansion, the ACC is no longer
special but just like every other conference. The Big East can arguably be
judged a better basketball conference. With Roy Williams at North Carolina,
the recruiting competition is definitely stronger. Unprotected by these
previous advantages, getting out now must look pretty appealing.

Tubby should already be used to the UK rednecks. Does he want to have to go
through all that again?

The UK job is a great job with great perks. So is the Duke job. The problem
with both jobs is that success has spoiled the alumni and fans. I don't see
a difference between either job. The only way you leave one for the other
is if you want a change of scenery or you think you are on the hotseat in
your current situation.

I posed the question that if Coach K left that if offered Tubby would take
the job at Duke. A friend of mine who is a UK fan says that no way would
Tubby even consider the job. What do you guys think?
