Re: scholarships & 5/8 rule

I think the most likely would be for Lucas to give up his scholarship. I think
he has earned one, but I thought at the time it was even mentioned that he was
given it as a reward for his committment, but with the understanding that he
may not get it the year after if it was needed.

I don't recall if that was a semi-offical statement, or just speculation on the
part of forum members...

Quoting Jon Macomber <address@hidden>:
I like the way it's broken down. The most logical guess would seem that if
Pilgrim is academically eligilible then he will take the last scholarship.
When will his academic standing be known? At the end of this quarter (1
more month)?

Without Pilgrim our inside game in '05-'06 would have only a SR. Hicks and a
SO. Souleymane. Is this a setup to get a bluechip interior player? With
that thought it seems likely that Lofton is a victim of a numbers game and
won't be here. I would really hate to see someone "run off" now that the
5/8 rule is gone - I don't want us to do the one thing that rule was
supposed to stop - especially right after the change - the media would just
love that...

Other scenarios discussed could be Pilgrim just walking on, Lucas "giving
up" his scholarship, Moore leaving for health/PT reasons (redshirt?), or a
player (Whaley?) deciding to leave. It would probably be too much to ask
for White to go on a track scholarship... Oh well, 5 and a half months
until Midnight Madness!

Including Lucas, UC has 12 scholarships accounted for next year:

Seniors: Lucas, Maxiell, Whaley, Williams
Juniors: Hicks, Kirkland, Moore, Muhammad, White
Sophomores: (none)
Freshmen: Banks, Bright, Souleymane

That leaves just one available, for Lofton or Pilgrim or someone else,
unless one (or more) of the above gives up their scholarship (by
leaving, or whatever). At this point, I have no idea what is most
likely to happen, although it's quite possible the last scholarship
won't be used at all.

When the 5/8 rule is officially past, how many scholarships
will we have left to give this year--2?? Am I wrong in assuming
that one will go to Pilgrim and the other hopefully to Chris
Loften? Does anyone have a line on what Pilgrim is going
to do?
