SAN ANTONIO -- The NCAA announced Thursday that it cleared Duke
University of any wrongdoing in the Corey Maggette case this past fall.

David Price, the NCAA's vice president for enforcement, said the
organization doesn't normally declare that a school has been
exonerated. It made an exception Thursday in light of a recent
cbssportsline.com column that suggested Duke's 1999 NCAA tournament
participation should be vacated because it included Maggette, who
received improper cash payments from his summer-league coach before he
enrolled at Duke. That coach, Myron Piggie, was sentenced to more than
three years in federal prison in May 2001 for one felony count of
conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and for one misdemeanor count
of failure to file income tax.

"After a lengthy investigation, we came to the conclusion that there
was insufficient evidence to determine the institution knew or should
have known (of the payments)," Price said. "Consequently, no action
was taken."
